Bernadetta seems decent so far, anyone else spotted promising?
She's not necessarily bad, but from my experience, an extra healer isn't really needed when you already have Annette, Mercedes and potentially Flayn, and her swordfighting is mediocre. Silence and Barrier are ok support spells but i didn't run into that many situations where they were useful. Considering how good Catherine, Seteth or Shamir seem to be, i don't think i would bother if you don't particularly like her as a character. Maybe in another house with less healers she could be more useful though.
Flayn is nice, I don’t know why they bothered giving her C rank in lances bc she’s not doing much unless you spam combat arts with a steel lance.
Cryil growths arnt that bad once you factor in class growths and aptitude, but yeah, he’s no donnel or mozu. His speed is actually good.
I can tell you that Catherine is nothing short of a god. Don’t give her a battalion bc her personal skill gives her -5 damage taken when you don’t have one. She’s strong and fast, has a good crest, insane bases, and good growths. She’s almost on par with ryoma
I can’t wait for Seteth to join me, I’m assuming it’s a story based event, don’t tell me
The best people I've found so far are Petra and Edelgard.
If you give Edelgard a throwing ax or a short ax [no idea how the English version names them, as I play the German localization] you can counter the pesky mages, and at short range Edelgards axe wielding simply destroys any opponent.
She is way stronger than any other character in the Adlerklasse, and her high evasion and high HP pool make her terrific for taking on dozens of enemies.
The best thing about her is that she doesn't really lose out on anything if you make her a dancer, so you can use her when isn't able to attack (because range is a problem) to have another character move/attack again.
This is also extremely useful if you grind for some extra experience, as Edelgard won't die that easily, so she's a top-tier front support as dancer.
Petra starts out kinda frigid, but as she advances towards swordmaster or that flying sword unit, she becomes a very strong attacker, as she will start to evade a lot of attacks and counter twice against most units, even cavalry, as she is pretty fast.
It also helps a lot against archers and mages that usually tend to outrange her (which can be prevented by strategically utilizing e.g. the thundersword for long ranged counterattacks).
Linhardt is really useful, too, though not as strong, but with his teleport ability, he can help units with a low movement radius to advance further, or even allow for some cavalry blitz in case the only condition for victory is to defeat the enemy leader or you only have a limited number of turns to win.
I liked his general close-and ranged healing capabilities, providing at least some nice backup without having to move him too far away from stronger units that could protect him from melee attacks.
If you make him a holy knight, he can even go and fight at the front lines while providing healing as a support.
Nobody is going to read this probably, but i just finished for the first time with the blue lions, here my opinion on every unit i used. Keep in mind that i didn't use any guides for the best classes or something. No Spoilers.
Promotion Path: Commoner - Myrmidon - Mercenary - Hero
Byleth was pretty good, but not as broken as i expected. He is very well rounded and has 45% in most growths, as well as really good bases. I thought this promotion path was very fitting, but it wasn't the best choice i think, because it forced me to use axes quite a lot, even though they rarely had an advantage over swords. It was a bit difficult to get him to hero because his weapon ranks increase slowly compared to the students because he can't take part in lessons. I had to take a lot of lections from the Professors/knights towards the end of the mercenary class. The sword of the creator was pretty good after a certain point, but usually not that needed because he was strong enough with an iron sword/axe +. I also ended up equipping a shield on him because he doubled almost everything anyway.
Promotion Path: Noble - Soldier - Cavalier - Paladin
Dimitri was one of the best characters on my team. I didn't use the lord classes, though i think they're pretty good. I'd rather have the mount though. Areadbhar is really good but you get it kinda late when he dominates anyway. He is not too fast though, so he won't double in the early game.
Promotion Path: Commoner - Soldier - Knight - Fortress Knight - Great Knight
Dedue was ridiculously tanky and ridiculously slow. He ended up with 48 defense, 70 HP and 4 Speed. He got one-rounded by mages until he got so much HP at one point that he could outlive an attack. Basically all physical units did 0x2 damage to him (Final Boss did 2x2.) He sometimes had a bit of trouble hitting with axes. He was good, but situational. Without going into spoilers here, his availability is a bit limited compared to the other students, and Gilbert is very similar with higher stats and easier access to great knight.
Promotion Path: Noble - Soldier - Cavalier - Paladin
He seems really strong on paper, but ended up mediocre for me. Mostly because he stopped gaining speed after the timeskip. Lance of ruin was useful, but only really worth it against demonic beasts or if he could double. His charm was really good (He also got the +5 from the dancer training), so he was really good with gambits. If i had focused his training more, i could have brought him up to dark knight or Great Knight.
Promotion Path: Noble - Myrmidon - Mercenary - Swordmaster - Mortal Savant
Felix was the strongest offensive unit for much of the game. he could one-round when no one else could, and with an iron sword no less. His crest is also good. his personal skill is good early on, but the stonger batallions in the late game make it useless. I didn't bother with training authority though and left him without a batallion, which is the true value of this skill, so you can focus his training on other skills. He was a little bit squishy for a melee unit, but could use a levin sword well and also thunder magic after promoting to mortal savant if melee was too dangerous. It also shouldn't be too difficult to train his axe/lance rank to use hand axes/Javelins if you want to. If you want to make him a mortal savant, also train faith magic with him.
Promotion path: Noble - Soldier - Pegasus Knight - Falcon Knight
Ingrid was really bad for some time because she just wouldn't get any strength. Later on though, she was one of the best units because her flight was really useful and her combat stats are also good. If she can't one-round with aonother sword/lance, she probably can with Luin. Not much more to say here. Don't waste her strength in flying and make her anything else than a peg knight.
Promotion Path: Commoner - Fighter - Archer - Sniper - Bow Knight
Ashe got a lot of strength for me, even though his growth is a bit low. even with his more average strength, i think he can be very useful because bows are really good in this game. I don't really see his strength in axes doing anything significant, because you probably don't want to make him a brigand or something due to his low defense. If you make him an archer, you probably want to make him use lances for melee so you can promote him to bow knight faster. His budding talent is also one of the few somewhat useful ones. His resistance is also high and he can be a good magekiller.
Promotion Path: Noble - Monk - Mage - Warlock - Gremory
Annette rarely doubled for me, but her single attack damge was good and she crit quite a lot. I gave her the caduceus and didn't regret it. She is very squishy though and you have to take good care of her positioning. Her healing was weaker than mercedes, but still useful. Like with Ashe, i don't really see her strength in axes going anywhere, aside from maybe Crusher. Her rallying is good. Aside from that, not really all that much to say about her.
Promotion Path: Commoner - Monk- Priest - Bishop- Gremory
Mercedes was a bit mediocre. She is about as squishy as Annette, but with less offensive power and a weaker spell list. However, her healing is more potent and she has multiple long range options for that. Her speed is theoretically a bit higher, but it was about the same for me.
Promotion Path: Priest - Bishop
Manuela was pretty weak. Her magic isn't that good and her swordfighting mediocre at the start and extremely bad later on. She got a bit better towards the tail end of the game when her speed started to pick up and her utility became more significant. She is more focused on utility than straight-up healing, kinda like silque. She wasn't particularly useful for me, but LTCers are going to love her because of warp. She is difficult to get up to a master class, though i could probably have managed it if i trained reason from the start. This isn't a huge deal for most people, but for Manuela it is because she is stuck with that atrocious 4 Movement.
Promotion Path: Warrior - Warmaster
Alois was much better than i expected, with very high strength and surprisingly decent speed. Gauntlets are very strong, and axes are good too. He can deal a lot of damage in one round against lower speed enemies and crits quite a lot, and can have up to 4 chances to get a crit in one round, which makes him ideal for fighting demonic beasts. His rallying was useful too.
Promotion Path Wyvern Knight - Wyvern Lord
Seteth was surpringly really good, better than most students. His speed, strength, dex and defense are really good, but he is slightly vulnerable against mages. He can one-round a lot and often has high crit rates, often depleting one health bar of a demonic beast in one round. I even got his crit rate to 100% once. Don't take him out of his class, because a flying Powerhouse like him can be really useful.
I hope that was helpful or at least a bit interesting!
Very informative! I’m starting blue lions soon, thanks :)
Annette is a godly mage
I have her as a glass cannon so be careful
^Yeah she gets taken down easy, but she’s so powerful
Wait Lemonz you got the game or no
Yeah I have it now
What do you think?
