Recruiting Byleth and Jeralt[]

In order to successfully recruit both Byleth and Jeralt, specific actions need to be performed during this chapter's main quest, The Conquest of Hevring. The full procedure is detailed below:

  1. Before the battle, select the "Locate Ambushers" strategy (this requires 30 strategy points). Although this is ultimately optional (the pair can be successfully recruited without selecting the strategy), doing so is highly recommended on a blind playthrough.
  2. After defeating the initial wave of enemies, several strongholds will open up, and a green X will be marked on the map, just northwest of the Forest Byway. Carefully advance to the green X, avoiding strongholds containing mercenary ambushers.
    • With the "Locate Ambushers" strategy, strongholds containing ambushers will glow red. These strongholds are: Wooded Plateau, Decaying Ramparts, Crooked Highroad, Forest Byway and Forest Highroad. At the same time, a green arrow will trace a path to the X that avoids all of these strongholds. The safe path requires capturing the Roadside Rest Stop, followed by the Roadside Forest Trail, then advancing north.
    • Should any of the strongholds housing mercenaries be captured, the mercenaries will reveal themselves and start an ambush. In particular, Byleth will appear in front of Randolph's stronghold, and will have to be defeated eventually, failing the recruitment.
  3. If the X is approached without triggering the mercenary ambushers, Fleche will appear on that spot. At the same time, mercenaries led by Alois will reveal themselves and advance on the Allied Base. Fleche must be defeated, as well as the mercenaries, who must all be defeated before they enter the Allied Base.
    • With the "Ironclad Defense" strategy, the gates to the Allied Base can be temporarily closed, preventing the ambushers from entering the stronghold for a time.
    • If any of the ambushing mercenaries successfully infiltrate the Allied Base, Alois will declare the ambush a success, and Byleth will appear in front of Randolph's stronghold to defend him. Again, this results in them needing to be defeated eventually, failing the recruitment.
  4. If the mercenaries are defeated before they can reach the Allied Base, Randolph will open the gates to his stronghold to confront the Kingdom army personally, while Byleth will appear at the Forest Highroad. Randolph must then be defeated before Byleth can reach him, without Byleth themselves being defeated.
    • If Byleth is defeated at this point, the recruitment will fail.
    • If Byleth reaches Randolph, they will cover for Randolph, and he will temporarily retreat as a result. Byleth will then have to be defeated in order to get to Randolph, failing the recruitment.
