—Acheron, during the defense of the Great Bridge of Myrddin
Acheron is a character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. He is a minor noble in the Leicester Alliance.
Profile[]
Acheron is the head of House Phlegethon, the smallest in the Leicester Alliance, with territory just north of the Great Bridge of Myrddin that serves as a major connection between the Alliance and the Adrestian Empire. His political opportunism has earned him the moniker "the Weathervane," and he is looked down upon throughout the ranks of Alliance nobility, and particularly Count Gloucester's son, Lorenz.
Despite his lack of power and the small territory he controls, he still holds enough influence in both the Alliance and Empire that simply removing him would be unfeasible.

In Imperial Year 1180, Acheron gets in a territorial dispute with Count Gloucester and raises an army to annex part of Gloucester territory. The count orders his son, Lorenz, to deal with Acheron, and successfully does so.
If Byleth teaches the Golden Deer or Lorenz transfers to the House they are teaching, he decides to enlist the aid of Byleth and his fellow classmates, which works out well for him as Acheron's army was larger than he expected.
Intending to obtain more territory, Acheron orders the attack to commence. The attack fails however; if fought and defeated, he pleads to be spared, ending the attack as the rest of his men flee. If not defeated within the turn limit, he realizes he is facing a stubborn defense and decides to give up, retreating with his men.
Following the battle, Acheron sent a letter to Count Gloucester, pledging to end the border dispute with him.
War Phase[]
Five years later in Imperial Year 1185, Acheron is one of the commanders sent to reinforce the Great Bridge of Myrddin.

If Byleth sides with Edelgard, Acheron is sent by Claude to support Judith's defense of the bridge against the attacking Adrestian Empire. He is openly resentful of being forced to obey Claude's orders, as he views Claude as a "false leader". If Leonie was not recruited, she states that he has the smallest House in the Alliance.
Should either Leonie or Judith fall in battle, Acheron and his men leave the battlefield, unwilling to die for a cause he doesn't believe in. It is likely that he sides with the Empire afterward should this happen. If he is fought and defeated, in his final moments, he complains that he should have allied with the Empire sooner.

If Byleth sides with Dimitri, Claude, or the Church of Seiros, Acheron arrives following Ladislava's message and attacks their forces from the rear. Although he is an Alliance noble, he sides with the Empire and seeks to curry Edelgard's favor by distinguishing himself in battle. If Acheron is defeated during the battle, in his final moments, he complains that he should not have allied with the Empire.
Personality[]
Acheron has earned the infamous title of "weathervane" amongst the people of Fódlan due to his lack of loyalty and tendency to change positions on matters when he senses any opportunity that might improve his fortunes. Very few, even among his so called "allies", have any faith in him and are never surprised when he flips positions on any matter.
He tends to be all bluster as he touts his strengths, but also quickly surrenders and pleads for his life when his plots fall through. In all routes, his overconfidence leads to his downfall after an attempted power play fizzles spectacularly, leading to his death on the battlefield.

- Acheron: What, you'll kill me? A tiny kid like you kill someone like me? Oh, that's too funny.
- Lorenz: An animal like you cannot be allowed to run amok. We will settle this here and now!
- Acheron: If you think you're up to the task, then by all means. But it's not my fault if it ends badly for you.

- Acheron: That's... that's my castle! NO!
- Claude: That's the declining Alliance at work, right there. Seems like you were facing the wrong way, Weathervane!

Etymology[]
With Three Hopes revealing Acheron's full name, as befitting of the master of the Great Bridge of Myrddin, he takes his name from three of the five rivers that are featured in the realm of Hades in Greek mythology: the river Acheron, the original river the ferryman Charon takes the souls of the deceased into the realm of Hades, the river Lethe, which induced complete amnesia upon drinking its waters, and the river Phelegathon, a river described as a river of flame, and is featured in Dante Alighieri's Inferno as a river of boiling blood in the Seventh Circle of Hell, Violence.
Trivia[]
- Acheron shares his voice actor (Doug Erholtz) with Python in Echoes.
- Acheron is one of the three characters to use completely different classes between NPC appearances. The other two are Manuela and Ladislava.
- He is also one of the two characters to canonically use two different Intermediate classes, the other being Hubert. In Acheron's case, he is a Mage in Lorenz's Paralogue, Cavalier in Crimson Flower Chapter 13 and a Warlock in Silver Snow/Azure Moon/Verdant Wind Chapter 16.
- Acheron is one of the few named NPC units in Three Houses to have some of his battle clips to be reused for generic NPCs, the others are Ladislava, Metodey, and Pallardó.
- Acheron is the only unique enemy NPC unit in Three Houses whose death is not required to complete the objective of any of his appearances.
- In the paralogue Land of the Golden Deer, he will simply give up after the turn limit has been reached.
- In Crimson Flower Chapter 13, he will retreat if Leonie or the generic Paladin replacing her has been defeated.
- In non-Crimson Flower Chapter 16, he is only required to be defeated if he appears, and he will not spawn at all if the other bosses are defeated before his arrival.
