Amber is a character from Fire Emblem Engage. He is a royal knight from Brodia, and serves as Diamant's retainer along with Jade.
Profile[]
Amber grew up on an alpaca farm in Brodia and helped raise them with his family. Inspired by the fables and legends of Elyos, Amber dreamed of becoming a legendary hero and so he pursed a goal of becoming a knight of Brodia. His hard work eventually paid off, as he placed only second to Jade in the battle tournament, and at Diamant's request, became his retainer.
When Brodia Castle is attacked by Elusia's Crown Princess, Ivy, he joins Diamant and Alear in the defense against her forces.
Personality[]
Amber is a romanticist who loves the fables and legends of the world with a desire to become something of a legend himself. He describes his hometown as boring and only the legends he heard gave his life any color. As a result, he earnestly desires to become noteworthy as a means to escape the dull life he left behind. He is interested in any means of achieving prestige, even completely overlooking sarcasm such as taking Vander's brush-off statement to Amber about polishing his skills to "make his weapon legendary" if it means making him a legend.
Amber's strive to become a legend is often impeded by his general naïveté and occasional ridiculous misadventures, often to no fault of his own, causing him to become ironically infamous in Brodia for it. He sometimes has a bit of a complex about it, especially concerning fellow retainer Jade due to him constantly coming in second to her. However, Jade has retorted that Amber is the first to take initiatives in situations and is a reliable friend at the end of the day. As such, Amber's earnest desire to create a legend of himself makes him steadfast in achieving his goals and never hesitates to jump into a situation, regardless of the risks.
As a result of growing up around them, Amber has a strong affinity for animals, especially alpacas. He has been known to make alpaca calls when missing home and can casually recognize the sound of a charging alpaca before even seeing it.

Amber joins the player's army at the start of Chapter 8 with one of the highest base Strength seen up until this point. He compounds this incredible base Strength with the tied-highest Strength growth in the cast, allowing him to dish out highly damaging attacks against most opponents throughout the game if he is leveled. In exchange for this immense power, however, his other and overall growth rates are among the worst in the game, including tying with Saphir for worst Resistance growth of any character at a measly 5%. This largely railroads him into the role of a physical sweeper, with most of his investment focused on allowing him to nuke opponents through means such as a Brave Lance and Pincer Strike, and he has little utility outside of this role.
Amber's starting Class, Lance Cavalier, naturally promotes into Lance Paladin and Wolf Knight. He appreciates the extra mobility of both classes and they both function well with his Personal Skill, Aspiring Hero, but Paladin's balanced stats generally do not counteract his low growth rates and Wolf Knight does not quite improve his Speed enough to consistently Follow-Up Attack most opponents, though it does let him wield Daggers. A potent hyper-offensive alternative can be a Halberdier with its aforementioned class skill Pincer Strike, which guarantees a follow-up attack if an ally is located on the opposite side of a foe that Amber attacks, if his weapon allows it. This lets him circumvent his mediocre Speed entirely to deal enormous amounts of damage on all but the toughest lategame opponents, even with very heavy weapons that slow him down.
Amber synergizes well with offensive Emblem Rings that allow him to utilize his strength fully. The Ring of the Lady of the Plains can largely fix his speed issues, especially after a few Speedtaker procs, and his natural potency with effective weapons such as Bows lets him function as an excellent cleaner of Fliers while engaged. The Ring of the Holy Knight also synergizes with his cavalry class and can allow him to assassinate squishier foes from a great distance before Cantering out of harm's way immediately after. Other than these, he functions reasonably with the other rings that can patch up his weaknesses, such as the Ring of the Young Lion's level boost and Hold Out.
Overall, Amber has few redeeming qualities outside of his one role as a physical damage dealer, but he performs well in this role, should the player invest properly into allowing him to use it. Otherwise, he will likely be overlooked as the game proceeds for other units that trade a small amount of strength for much better stats elsewhere, especially in speed.
