“In the ancient past... in an age when humans were not yet born, the first dragons were born in this world. Powerful nature and long lifespan... that is what the Archdragons were. They were pure, and therefore the strongest beings.”
Audamorze describes the Archdragons

The Archdragons are a race of dragons said to be the first ever in Elibe and who originate from the Fire Emblem: Hasha no Tsurugi manga. They are also said to have been pure, and thus the most powerful form of life. They were born when the world was filled with despair and thus despair acts as a source of their power. There are few known Archdragons with only one naturally born Archdragon being alive during the events of the story, that being the manga's protagonist Al.

Profile[]

It is stated within Hasha no Tsurugi that Archdragons were born into the world when it was filled with despair and so in order for an Archdragon to fully awaken to their immense power, they must first be overcome with despair. This is put on display twice in the manga. The first time being in Al's final confrontation with Zephiel where in he, unable to help Roy in the fight due to being in the process of being sealed by the Binding Blade (at the time being wielded by Zephiel), is overcome with despair at his own helplessness and a desire for greater power and begins to transform into his dragon form. This is only stopped thanks to the seal of the Binding Blade catching up to his transformation and preventing it from completing.

The second instance is when, after stabbing his father who had been mind controlled by the Black Bone Clan's leader Audamorze, Al believes that he had actually killed him. This was a plan by Audamorze meant to push Al into despair, causing Al to transform fully.

While the full power of an Archdragon is not clear, it is said to be greater than any other being. So much so, that during the events of The Scouring the Black Bone Clan approached humanity with the plan to steal a living Archdragon's power in order to use it to wipe out the dragons. This was however, rejected by the Eight Legends who had no desire to use such power.

Even the Archdragons themselves understood their destructive capabilities, and thus created a sword from the bones of one of their own. This sword, known as the Champion's Blade, was intended to be use in the event that an Archdragon's power were ever missused. This foresight proved beneficial as upon having stolen Al's draconic powers, Audamorze transformed into an Archdragon himself, with even one of the Legendary Weapons of Elibe, Aureola, having no effect on him (although this could have also been due to the inexperience of the user). It is unknown however if an Archdragon is able to withstand the power of the Binding Blade, which is stronger than the Legendary Weapons.

History[]

Little is known about the Archdragons' history or what their position in The Scouring was, though given their supposed immense power and potential resistance to the Legendary Weapons, it is likely they, like the Divine Dragons, took a stance of neutrality, as their involvement would most certainly have had an effect on the war.

While the activities of the race at large is unknown, the Archdragon Melitha married and bore a child to the leader of the Eight Legends Hartmut, although he was unaware of her true nature. Upon being told that she was a dragon, Hartmut, being the man who saved humanity from the dragons and thus believing he would be unable live with her, sealed both her and their half-dragon son Al with the Binding Blade.

Melitha and Al would be unsealed by the Black Bone Clan many centuries later in hopes of taking revenge against humanity and dragons. She would ultimately be killed after being struck by an arrow fleeing from her captors with the help of the former clan member Magough. Al was then left as the only known living Archdragon.

Audamorze would later realize his goal of stealing the powers of an Archdragon from Al, but was shortly thereafter killed by him when he managed to use the true power of the Champion's Blade.

The last time an Archdragon is seen is when Al is transported into a space within the Archdragon whose bones were used to create the Champion's Blade. Al sees the skeletal remains of the Archdragon and chooses to return the Champion's Blade to it.

Known Archdragons[]

  • Al - Protagonist of the Hasha no Tsurugi manga and son of Melitha and Hartmut.
  • Melitha - Al's mother and lover of Hartmut.
  • Audamorze - Formerly human leader of the Black Bone Clan who stole Al's powers and became an Archdragon.

Trivia[]

  • Upon Al first making contact with the Fire Emblem, a depiction of a dragon is drawn alongside him at certain moments in the story. These depictions vary, although none of them match the final design of his dragon form.
  • Due to an Archdragon needing to succumb to despair in order to access their full power, it is possible that they cannot transform with just a Dragonstone. This can be seen as Al never actually transforms into a dragon using a stone, always retaining a human form when using it.
