Not to be confused with beast tribe Laguz.

Beast Unit is a designation of certain classes that mark them with a vulnerability to anti-beast weapons (e.g., Beast Killer).

Overview[]

The formal beast unit archetype was introduced in Fire Emblem Awakening as a merging of the horseback attribute, the beast-like shapeshifter attribute, and the non-wyvern, flying mount attribute; each variant of beast unit can operate differently from one another due to differences in stat spread or mobility.

Its earliest iteration can be seen in the Laguz units from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Horseback Classes[]

The horseback class has existed since the very first Fire Emblem game, mostly highlighted by the longstanding Cavalier class. Horseback units are generally highlighted by their high movement and relatively balanced stats, though a few variations may have stat specialties. Overall, they have great map presence and can reliably perform various offensive or supportive functions. They do, however, suffer the heaviest movement penalty when traversing sand tiles.

Flying Mounted Classes[]

The flying mount has also existed since the very first Fire Emblem game with the longstanding Pegasus Knight class. Like horseback units, flying mounted classes are highlighted by their high movement. Their aerial typing grants them immunity to almost all forms of terrain-related movement penalties as well as the ability to fly over walls and bodies of water or lava. Consequently, they are tied with wyvern-mounted classes in possessing the greatest map presence out of all unit types. However, as flying units, they are weak to Bows and Wind Magic.

Wyvern-mounted units do not apply to this class as they are considered dragon units instead. Although the Griffon Rider from Fire Emblem Awakening is a promotion of the Wyvern Rider, it is considered a beast unit and not a dragon unit.

Shapeshifter Classes[]

Animal-like shapeshifters were first introduced in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance as beast and bird Laguz. They could transform between humanoid and Laguz forms on command so long as they had sufficient points in their transformation gauge. When transformed, Laguz gained various stat bonuses as well as the ability to engage in combat. Based on appearance and combat properties, the Laguz tribes could be considered the predecessor to the beast-like shapeshifters in Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates.

Fire Emblem Awakening introduced the first beast-like shapeshifter class to transform through the use of stones: the Taguel. Taguel were once considered an extinct race of diverse animal-like shapeshifters, similar to the Laguz. The only remaining Taguel are the rabbit Taguel Panne and her son, Yarne. Fire Emblem Fates expands the beast-like shapeshifters to include two more races: the Kitsune and the Wolfskins.

Beast-like shapeshifters are highlighted by their ability to harness various stat bonuses from beaststones as well as their exceptional offensive and defensive stats. They can serve as reliable offensive threats on the battlefield and can traverse common forest tiles without any movement penalty. However, all units with a beast shapeshifter class in their set of base classes retain the beast attribute regardless of the class they occupy.
