Black Magic (黒魔法 Kuro Mahō) is the term given to offensive magical spells in Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, as well as Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Overview[]

In Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Black Magic is similar to both Anima magic and Dark magic as it focuses mainly on offensive elemental spells. Unlike Anima Magic which can be generally used by anyone given the specific Tomes, casters instead learn specific spells of their own preference as they Level Up and Promote. Since magic users in Gaiden and  Shadows of Valentia do not use Tomes, they must expend a fixed amount of HP to cast the spells.

In Three Houses, Black Magic is, like how it was in Valentia, once more similar to both Anima magic and Dark magic as it focuses mainly on offensive spells, only this time, there are playable characters that can natively use Dark magic spells. Unlike in Valentia, Fódlanese black magic mainly refers to both the elemental and non-elemental offensive magic learned by certain units, while also distinguishing the existence of Dark magic spells, dividing the black magic umbrella made by Valentia.

Much like the Valentian casters, Fódlanese casters learn specific spells of their own preference, though here this is done as they sharpen their Reason skill stat, expanding their spell list through tutoring rather than leveling up. While Fódlanese casters don't give up health to cast their magic, what they have in a trade-off is that their spells have only a set amount of uses per map. Additionally, only magic-capable classes are able to use magic at all, so classes like the Cavalier or Armored Knight restrict characters trained in magic from using their magic spells. Certain magic-capable classes can additionally double the amount of charges their magic can have, with the Warlock class being one such class.
