Bonuses and Penalties are a game mechanic in Fire Emblem Heroes.
Overview[]
Bonuses and Penalties are a key feature for combat in Fire Emblem Heroes. These are explicitly tied to the equipable skills for the Heroes the player may use or face in a battle. Bonuses and Penalties are visually indicated on the battle map and do not include skills and effects that change base stats by default as these are considered flat increases to the stat simply by being equipped like HP +5 or Life and Death. The most basic skills to exemplify a Bonus and Penalty inflicting skill are any Hone skill like Hone Attack or any Threaten skill like Threaten Defense as the former gives a Buff to Attack on the battle map to an ally while the latter inflicts a Defense Debuff on the battle map. These are indicated by any affected stat value having a blue coloration if it is a stat boost or a red coloration if it is a stat penalty. All stat Buffs and Debuff effects are considered【Bonus】and【Penalty】respectively when skills take either into account for their effects, these also include effects that change movement as well.
Overtime, a plethora of skills have been introduced that give Bonuses and Penalties that affect gameplay in various ways outside of just stat manipulation. From the beginning of Heroes, several skills featured Bonus and Penalty effects, most of which is displayed on the battle map with a unique symbol. These effects involve things like movement manipulation or reversal of Buffs like Gravity and Panic respectively. Skills that have these abilities starting from Ver. 3.05 with Bridal Fjorm are highlighted in the skill descriptions with brackets ("【】") to denote any skill considered a【Bonus】or【Penalty】.
All【Bonus】and【Penalty】have the effect of either last "for 1 turn" or "that turn only" in their description. Several【Bonuses】source their effects from other skills such as Desperation and Bonus Doubler, however units who innately carry those source skills are not affected by skill effects that target【Bonuses】specifically as they are inherent effects of a skill. Some penalty effects are self inflicted as part of the skill's effect like Future Vision. Duo and Harmonized Heroes may also grant a【Bonus】and or inflict a【Penalty】as part of their Duo Skill and Harmonized Skill respectively. For the latter, the Bonus effects will only apply to allies who come from the same titles as either unit in that Harmonized Hero.
Staring in Ver. 7.08 through Brave female Corrin, the Divine Vein line of Bonuses and Penalties was introduced, which carry the same brackets when listed in skill descriptions. Unlike 【Bonus】and【Penalty】, Divine Veins affect the terrain/map first, which in turn can affect both ally and foe if they are on said affected tile(s).

All listed skills are only if they evoke the effect listed. Some skills released prior to the usage of the brackets will be listed if they contain the same effect as the Bonus/Penalty, such as Trilemma and Glare.
