Canto (or Canter in Fire Emblem Engage) is a skill that debuted in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

Overview[]

Canto is a recurring skill in the Fire Emblem franchise. The specifics of the mechanic shift from game to game, but is most often depicted as a skill that grants mounted units the ability to move again after performing certain actions, assuming the unit has not already moved their maximum allotted spaces in that turn. The full history of this skill precedes the naming convention, and it did not become referred to as 'Canto' until the release of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

The mechanic of repeated movement was first introduced in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War as a hidden skill held by every mounted class. This skill allows a character to move, perform an action like attack an enemy, and then use any remaining unused movement after combat. The Knight Ring grants said skill to unmounted units, and can be obtained by keeping Lachesisbodyguards alive at the end of Chapter 2.

This concept remains unchanged in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, and works in tandem with the newly-introduced Rescue mechanic. A rescue chain, a strategy which involves a character's rescue by multiple mounted units passing the rescued character between them, is possible only due to the allowance of repeated movement, and can affect how rankings in the game are scored.

In Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, The Blazing Blade, and The Sacred Stones, mounted units are not allowed to move again if they have attacked or used a staff.

In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, mounted units are, as in the Super Famicom-era titles, able to use leftover movement after performing actions. However, the skill bearing the name 'Canto' is a separate skill only usable by Reyson, and grants him the ability to sing Galdr, which grants units that have already acted the ability to act again before the end of the current turn.

In Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Canto became the name of the skill allowing mounted units, flying units, and Hawk tribe laguz units to use any unused movement post-action.

In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Canto is a class skill of all mounted and flying units. It is also acquired upon equipping the Fetters of Dromi (a Hero's Relic acquired in the Cindered Shadows DLC) regardless of the equipping character having the compatible Crest or not.

In Fire Emblem Engage, the skill is called Canter. It is a skill unique to Emblem Sigurd. A unit can inherit the skill for use permanently if they develop bond levels with Sigurd and then spend 1,000 SP to acquire it. Canter grants a unit the ability to move up to two spaces after acting, even if they have used all of their movement prior to acting. An advanced version of the skill, Canter+, grants the unit an additional space of movement, allowing the user to move up to three spaces after acting.

Fire Emblem Heroes sees Canto as an effect of specific weapons and in the Near Trace and Far Trace series of skills. While the skill is available to any calvary or flying unit through inheritance of the Trace skills, it has a strong association with seiðjárn mounts from the realm of Niðavellir. The weapons of all three members of the royal family feature the skill, and the Steam Units that make up the realm's army gain usage of the skill through the Gullinbursti Sacred Seal they have equipped.

Other Games[]

Canto shows up in an altered form in TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga. Instead of being a hidden class skill of all mounted units, Canto is a personal visible skill only usable by mounted classes. Not all mounted units learn canto by default, but a Re-Move Manual can be used to teach it to mounted units who do not learn the skill by leveling. Canto functions differently as units cannot use use the skill at the end of a turn if they took damage from an enemy after attacking.

Etymology[]

"Canto" (Italian language) is the highest vocal part in a piece of choral music. It can also refer to a section or division of a poem, song, or melody.

The skill's name in Fire Emblem Engage, 'Canter', is an English word describing the gait of a horse moving faster than a trot, but slower than a full gallop.
