The Chalice of Beginnings is an accessory that debuts in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and a key element in the Cindered Shadows side story.

History[]

In Imperial Year 185, after the completion of Garreg Mach Monastery, the Chalice of Beginnings was used by the Four Apostles to perform the Rite of Rising to resurrect the Progenitor God. After the attempt failed, the Chalice was sealed away under the Monastery in what would become Abyss. The seal could only be broken by those who bore the Crests of the Four Apostles.

Aelfric seeks the Chalice to perform the Rite of Rising to revive Sitri. However the attempt ends in failure, and his and Sitri's body are absorbed into the Chalice, becoming an Umbral Beast.

The Rite of Rising itself is a ritual that involves filling the Chalice of Beginnings with the blood of the Four Apostles, or in the case of Aelfric's attempt, the blood of the Apostles' descendants. When Aelfric's attempt at the ritual results in his transformation into an Umbral Beast, Rhea comments that it's the same result as before, suggesting that someone involved in the original ritual was similarly transformed.

Overview[]

Fire Emblem: Three Houses[]

After completing the Cindered Shadows side story, the Chalice of Beginnings can be obtained as early as the first chapter, along with 10000 Renown. When equipped, the user is granted Counterattack and nullifies effective damage against the user.

With the exception of Jeritza - who can get Counterattack from mastering his personal class - this item is fantastic for everybody thanks to the ability to counterattack on enemy phase, especially early game because of the player's limited tools and the range of archers on higher difficulty. Overall, this item is best used with someone with high defence or speed, as this will allow them to tank or take out Ballista archers, and the same applies with Fire Orbs, albeit having a high resistance rather than defence.

As Vantage-Wrath tanks are very vulnerable to ranged attacks, it is also highly effective when combined with these skills, as it will allow the character to counter attack at any range before the enemy gets to attack at all, likely one shotting them due to the increased crit rate.

The nullification to effective damage is also great, though more situation because the unit's class may not have a need for it. Additionally, not many enemies are equipped with weapons effective against Heavy Armor nor Riding, so it is really only used to protect Flying units against bows. However, this is incredible for Flying units, because typically their high mobility is countered by having archers attack from far away, but not only will the effective damage be nullified but the unit can counterattack against the enemy.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[]

In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, the Chalice of Beginnings is granted as the final award from the Reward Master in the Base Camp for completing 450 achievements, which require at least 3 New Game+ runs. Similar to its function in Three Houses, it nullifies extra effectiveness against the holder, and also has a counterattack effect where attackers will receive damage proportional to what they inflict on the holder.
