There are many different characters in the Fire Emblem series. Each character has a different role in the series, whether they be the main protagonist/antagonist or a side character in a story, to whether they are one of the strongest or weakest characters in gameplay.
Sometimes in the series, characters will tend to follow certain trends and roles that would be similar to others in the series. For more detail, see here: Archetype.
Most characters are made unique in gameplay. How this is performed is that many characters have different classes, or perhaps different sets of classes. For more detail, see here: Class.
