Combat Arts (戦技 Sengi) or simply Arts are a gameplay mechanic introduced in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Overview[]

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia[]

Combat Arts are special skills and techniques that characters can use in battle. Unlike Skills which are learned based on a character's current class, Arts are learned by using specific weapons, shields, or rings. The more a character uses an equipment item, they begin to learn new attacks with different properties from the standard attacks. They can increase range, deal effective damage against a specific type of enemy, or deal more damage. Once a character has learned an Art, any subsequent weapon that has the same Art as the ones a character has learned will be automatically usable from the start. To activate Combat-type Combat Arts, a character must first sacrifice a set amount of health.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses[]

Combat Arts are gained by sharpening a character's skills in their training, be it from honing their skills in weaponry, special unit classes, mastering a class they have unlocked in their Certification exams, or unlocking a Budding Talent by being tutored. Like the Valentian Arts before, the Fódlan Combat Arts can have different properties from standard attacks, and can vary in purpose, be it from being a simply stronger attack or be supporting in nature, such as moving ally units, or healing oneself. Using weapon-type Combat Arts, however, weakens a weapon's Durability faster than normal. While characters are mainly limited to having only 3 Combat Arts equipped at once, certain characters that have Crests can use a fourth, personal Combat Art when they wield a weapon-type Hero's Relic that corresponds to their Crest. In addition, certain classes will enable a special class-specific Combat Art for characters once they have mastered that specific class and are currently in said class, ignoring the three Combat Art limit as well, allowing certain characters to have up to 5 Combat Arts.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[]

In a similar vein to how it was in Three Houses, Combat Arts are gained primarily through mastering a class, which can be unlocked behind the one star, two star, or full mastery of a class. However, not every unit learns the same Combat Arts or even Ability from the same class; either through class mastery or weapon level raising.

Unlike how it was in Three Houses, all units have a hard limit of having 2 Combat Arts equipped at any given time, even those associated with Heroes' Relics, but as a trade-off, any lost Durability spent on combat arts is regained after battle. Additionally, spells such as Fire, Ward, etc. in this game are treated just like Combat Arts, meaning casting them takes Durability out of a weapon, resulting in magic classes equipping tomes rather than being limited by magic charges, with non-offensive Combat Arts also draining Durability. Some Combat Arts also have elemental affinities, and as such have the same ailments that come with those affinities.

A unique feature is that Combat Arts and spells can be leveled up, gaining experience via usage on enemy units, from Lv. 1 to 3. Leveling up Combat Arts/spells reduces the amount of Durability they use up by 2, as well as increasing their Might. Another feature is that Combat Arts have a cooldown window after they are used, preventing players from spamming Combat Arts left right and center.

Due to Three Hopes being a Warriors game, Combat Arts have unique animations and ranges rather than being one big windup attack like most melee-range combat arts were in Three Houses, with the effects of Crests used by Crest-bearing playable units have been changed to accommodate for the different genre as well. Crest effects can also be upgraded, from Lv. 1 to 3, via the Facilities Manager and Tactics Instructor.

Those who bear the Crests of:

  • Seiros, Daphnel, Gautier, and Charon have a set percent chance of increasing the damage from combat arts, with Major Crests have a 50% chance while Minor Crests have 25%. Raising the Crest levels of those who possess these Crests increases the power of the Crest's effects when they are proc'd.
  • Blaiddyd have a 20% chance of increasing the damage of a combat art in exchange for higher Durability consumption. Raising Dimitri's Crest levels increases the power of the Crest's effects when they are proc'd, while also reducing the amount of bonus Durability consumption.
  • Goneril/Cichol have an x% of landing a critical hit with combat arts. Raising Hilda, Ferdinand, and Seteth's Crest level increases the Crest proc rate, which is dependent of the user having a Major Crest or Minor Crest.
  • Indech have a x% chance of making a just used combat art bypass the cooldown period. Raising Bernadetta's Crest levels increases the Crest proc rate.
  • Riegan/Chevalier have an x% chance to restoring their bearer's HP when landing a combat art. Raising Claude and Balthus' Crest levels increases the Crest proc rate, which is dependent of the user having a Major Crest or Minor Crest.

Certain characters can pass on Combat Arts to their adjacent while in Pair Up. To do so, both units must have at least a C-rank support with each other, and the teacher's Combat Art must be at Lv. 3, e.g., both Shez and Holst can potentially pass on Windsweep to any allied unit such as Catherine or Edelgard, as long as they doesn't have the potential to already learn the teacher's Combat Art. In a similar vein to tutoring, the means to pass down Combat Arts involves the teacher using the Combat Art enough times until a little notification pops up that says "peer teaching successful" over the unit. The Combat Arts that can be taught to other units are marked with an ovoid bubble with an ellipsis inside it.
