“I have family in Hoshido. I also have family in Nohr. Even if I were to lose everything... Even if they all despise me... I can't choose to side with one against the other. I simply can't do that. I don't care if I lose everything. This is what I've decided.”
—The Avatar in Chapter 6 (Revelation)

The Avatar (マイユニット Mai yunitto, My Unit in the Japanese version), default name Corrin (カムイ, Kamui in the Japanese version) is a playable character in Fire Emblem Fates and the leading main protagonist of the game. Their name and appearance are customizable by the player.

Profile

The Avatar was supposedly born to the Hoshidan royal family as the child of Mikoto and Hoshido's king Sumeragi. As a result, they are the younger half sibling of Ryoma and Hinoka and the older half sibling of Takumi and Sakura, whom are instead Sumeragi's children with his first wife Ikona. They were kidnapped as a young child and raised by the royal family of the neighboring kingdom of Nohr, gaining new siblings in the form of Xander, Camilla, Leo, and Elise. Unlike previous protagonists, the Avatar in Fates has the ability to transform into a dragon, a similar trait to Manakete from past games of the series. They only gain the ability to transform after Chapter 5. As a member of royalty, the Avatar can wield the power of Dragon Veins, allowing them to alter the terrain of a map. They are also the chosen wielder of the legendary Yato.

A great war looms over Hoshido and Nohr and soon the two kingdoms meet on the battlefield. The Avatar must choose to side with one of the kingdoms and help with their respective causes or be neutral in an attempt to combat a larger threat by joining the two kingdoms together. The Avatar has the services of Silas, Gunter, and Kaze, as well as Felicia, Flora, Jakob, and Lilith. If the Avatar achieves an S-Support with any opposite gendered character, they will have a child named Kana, whose gender is the opposite of the Avatar's. The Male Avatar can also be the father of Shigure, while the Female Avatar can be the mother to all of the children characters aside from Shigure.

In actuality, the Avatar was born to Mikoto and the human manifestation of Anankos's benevolent soul in Valla. However, their happiness toward their child was short lived as the dragon form of Anankos began his rampage in Valla, forcing Anankos' human form to send his lover and child to safety. Eventually, Mikoto brought them to Hoshido where she eventually married the Hoshidan King, Sumeragi. The Avatar was officially adopted into the family, but the fact that they were not related to the Hoshido royal family by blood was kept a secret by Sumeragi, Mikoto, and Ryoma.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Despite conflict between Hoshido and Nohr, the Nohrian King, Garon, wanted to parley with Sumeragi and the Avatar was brought at the suggestion of Garon. However, this parley was a trap and Sumeragi was killed defending the Avatar. The Avatar was kidnapped by Garon and raised in Nohr as a member of their royal family. The Avatar lost all memory of their life prior to their life now confined to the Northern Fortress, with their memory of Sumeragi's death in particular being sealed away by a curse.

For many years, the Avatar was raised in the Northern Fortress and was not allowed to leave it until Garon deemed them worthy. They were accompanied by their retainers and servants Flora, Felicia, and Jakob. Gunter, a veteran soldier, was also hired to serve as the Avatar's combat instructor and the two became close. The Nohrian Royal Siblings would also pay frequent visits to the castle with Xander in particular serving as the Avatar's main sparring partner. One day, a young boy Silas payed a visit to the Fortress. The two quickly became friends, however their time was cut short when Silas attempted to smuggle the Avatar out of the fortress to take them on a picnic. He was forbidden from returning and the Avatar never saw him again nor could they remember him. The Avatar also found an injured bird one day and nursed it back to health. Unbeknownst to them, this "bird" would become a very important person in their life very soon after.

Prologue

Many years later, the Avatar receives a premonition of a battle between Hoshido and Nohr in a dream, but they are awoken by Flora, Jakob and Felicia. Before the Avatar can properly tell them the story, they are summoned by Xander for another combat test, where they finally succeed in impressing Garon enough to allow them to leave the Fortress. Garon summons them immediately to Castle Krakenburg in Windmire, Nohrs capital and gifts them the Ganglari as a present for succeeding in showing their worth. To test the Avatar's loyalty, he orders that they execute some recently captured Hoshidan soldiers. Among them are Kaze and Rinkah, both of whom they choose to spare. Though Garon demands that they be executed, the Avatar continues to refuse, however Leo and Xander help the Avatar out by pretending to execute them in order to allow the Avatar to set them free later.

Upset by the Avatar's defiance, Garon gives them the task of surveying a fortress situated at the Bottomless Canyon. Xander warns the Avatar to be careful around Hans who was sent with them as Xander had once arrested him. At the Canyon, the Avatar sees that the fortress is occupied by Hoshidan soldiers and decides to head back to report. Unfortunately, Hans engages on the Hoshidan soldiers, forcing the Avatar and Gunter to fight them. After the battle, the Nohrian siblings, worried for the Avatar, check on them to find them still engaged with the Hoshido forces. When they are sent back to the Castle, Hans betrays the Avatar and attacks Gunter, plunging him into the canyon. Enraged, the Avatar shifts their arm into a dragon appendage, but before the can exact their vengeance, the Ganglari flings the Avatar into the Canyon. Suddenly, Lilith, the Avatar's stablehand appears, transforms into a dragon, and rescues them by sending them to the Astral Realm, where she gives them a free space to rest in between battle from then on.

Immediately upon returning to the world, they are knocked out by Rinkah and brought to Hoshido. Escorted by Kaze back to Castle Shirasagi, they meet Ryoma, their long lost older brother and most importantly, Mikoto. Overjoyed to be reunited with her child, she embraces them, however the Avatar's earlier childhood is a haze, preventing them from realizing that she really is their mother. Not wanting to pressure them, Mikoto tells them to take all the time they need. However, alarming news came from the norther area of Hoshido where Faceless, Nohrian monstrosities, were attacking a local village where the Avatar's two sisters, Hinoka and Sakura were helping. Together, the Avatar and Ryoma rescues the Hoshidan sisters who happily reunite with their long lost sibling. Later, the Avatar walks near a lake to gather their thoughts. Suddenly, a beautiful melody fills the air as they spot a blue-haired girl who introduces herself as Azura, a Nohrian princess who was kidnapped and raised in Hoshido in an inverse situation as the Avatar is. After spending a few days in Hoshido, they are still unable to recall any memories of their past. However, Mikoto still wishes to introduce them to the people of Hoshido.

At the castle town, just as Mikoto introduces the Avatar to the Hoshidan people, a hooded man appears and calls the Gangleri to him. Using the sword, he causes a large explosion, causing massive destruction to the town and the citizens there. Finally, using shards of the blade, he directs it towards the Avatar, only for Mikoto to intercept the attack. Mikoto merely asks if they are alright. As they affirm that they are fine, Mikoto expires in their arms. Her death causes the Avatar to spontaneously awaken their dragon blood, causing them to become a Feral Dragon. Devoid of their senses, the Avatar in grief, assaults the hooded man, but only manages to force him to retreat. Azura, using her special pendant and song, she is able to quell their rage, reverting them back to their human form. Although Takumi, the Avatar's younger brother, labels them the cause of the tragedy, Ryoma assures that the Avatar is innocent and that the Nohrian forces are responsible.

With the death of Mikoto, the barrier that once prevented hostile attacks from Nohr disappeared. Immediately the Nohrian forces lead by the Nohrian Royal Siblings head out to the Plains of Hoshido where they are intercepted by the Hoshidan army lead by the Hoshidan Royal Siblings. The Avatar realizes that their dream had come true and now, their siblings from both families are about to cross blades. Both families call out to the Avatar to join them. The Avatar is left with a huge decision to make; either return their Nohrian siblings on their conquest in Hoshido, join the Hoshido siblings to repel the Nohrian forces, or find another path by siding with neither.

Birthright

The Avatar decides to fight for Hoshido, refusing to follow the man who orchestrated the death of their own mother. Despite Xander's plea to have them return home to Nohr, the Avatar refuses and thus Xander resolves himself into attacking the Avatar and dragging them back to Nohr. After nearly succeeding, Ryoma steps in and the Hoshido army manages to repel the Nohrian forces. They are then labeled a traitor by Nohr.

Throughout the initial part of the story, the Avatar gathers the best of the Hoshidan forces and find Ryoma and Takumi who went missing. Eventually Takumi returns to the army, but is possessed by a dark magic. Thanks to Azura the spell is lifted and the Hoshidan army decides to invade Nohr as it would be the best chance to end the war.

Arriving in Nohr, they wind up in Cyrkensia, a port town where, at a local Opera House, where King Garon was going to watch a performance. As luck would have it, the star of the show Layla wanted to visit her mother and Azura comes up with the idea to masquerade as her using Zola's magic. An idea was formed where they would ambush Garon and force him to surrender and end the war. Azura sings Lost in Thoughts All Alone, causing Garon some discomfort. Garon summons his forces, aware that the Hoshidans were inside and reveals that Zola had leaked information to him. The Avatar barely manages to escape from the trap and makes their way with the rest of their army to Cheve.

At Cheve, the Avatar stops to take a rest, only for Camilla and Hans to appear and another fight ensues. The Chevois quietly aid the Hoshidans with various items to help their cause. After the battle is over, the Avatar tries to reason with Camilla, almost managing to convince her until Leo shows up. Hans is revealed to have survived the battle. Before they are able to do anything, a General appears and attacks Leo. A strong rebel force led by Scarlet soon appear, Leo retreats with Hans, taking Camilla with him. The general reveals himself as Ryoma, and the Hoshidan siblings are reunited again. Scarlet takes the group to the resistance hideout, where the Nohrian army suddenly attacks. They make their way to the border wall and break through the defenses set there.

Due to the Nohrian blockade around the capital, the Avatar is forced to go through Mount Garou. There they encounter Keaton who, despite initial hostility, allows them to pass through. However, a magical land mine planted by Iago detonates, killing a Wolfskin and a fight ensues. At the end of the battle, the Avatar expresses regret fighting the Wolfskin people, but this though is dashed when the ground crumbles beneath them. As they fall, Kaze leaps in and grabs the Avatar, but the Avatar clings to Kaze's arm for dear life. Depending on the Avatar's support level with Kaze, a different scene unfolds.

  • If the Avatar does not achieve an A Rank or higher with Kaze, Kaze sacrifices himself by throwing the Avatar to Hinoka as the ground beneath him crumbles and he falls into the chasm. The Avatar grieves for his death, but knows that they have to move on.
  • If the Avatar has achieved an A or S Rank with Kaze, he notices a magic land mine and throws a Shuriken at it. The explosion throws both the Avatar and Kaze out of the cliff to safety. Grateful for Kaze's rescue, their bond is fortified and the Hoshidan army moves on.

Shortly after leaving Mount Garou, Takumi has a critical fever and the Avatar decides to go search a Nohrian stronghold for medicine. They encounter Flora who offers to find the medicine they need. However Iago makes an appearance to take down the Avatar. After repelling Iago and his forces, they successfully find the medicine and Takumi is cured. Needing a place to rest, Flora suggest that they stay at the Ice Tribe Village and both the Avatar and Felicia are delighted by the idea. At the village, Flora leaves for a short time and returns with Nohrian soldiers. Hurt by her betrayal, the army defeats Flora and the Avatar questions why she attacked them. Flora explains that King Garon forced her to, lest she be killed by him. Unable to cope with her cowardice, Flora sets herself ablaze and dies, much to the shock of the Avatar, Felicia and Jakob.

Later on, the Avatar passes through the Woods of the Forlorn, where they meet Leo again, who renounces his familial love for them and fights them. Despite his retainers and the Faceless horde, he is defeated and the Avatar cannot bring themselves to hurt him, and Leo is unable to bring himself to hurt them either. He apologizes for his actions and gives them a round-trip warp tome to Notre Sagesse in exchange for a crystal ball Azura gives him.

During their stay at Notre Sagesse, the Avatar flags down an old man, who directs them to the Sevenfold Sanctuary, where the Hoshidans face off against the shades of those that died there. After defeating the enemy, the group walks into the door and finds them back at town. The old man reveals himself as the Rainbow Sage they are looking for, and prepares the Seal of Flames ritual, giving them the Noble Yato. After using Leo's warp tome to take them back into the Woods of the Forlorn, they head north towards Fort Dragonfall, but are ambushed by Iago again. They escape the fortress and head out to sea. At sea, the Hoshidan siblings are notified of the battle front at home and take a rumored shortcut through the Demon's Falls to reach the Nohrian capital of Windmire faster.

When they reach Windmire, they are ambushed by Shura's gang, who demands the Avatar's Yato to be spared. After a battle, Shura swears loyalty to Ryoma after hearing of his royal status. Shura shows the group the underground life of Nohr and on the way, bump into Elise, who was selling flowers. Elise takes the group into a small house where her wetmother, Cassita, gives some information about Garon and two queens; Arete and Katerina. While on the way to castle Krakenburg's throne room, they are ambushed by Camilla after Elise's retainers thought they had kidnapped her. They manage to beat her in combat and reexplain the situation to her before proceeding.

After exiting the secret tunnel, the Hoshidans find themselves in the middle of a training ground led by Hans. Han's soldiers are unable to defeat the Hoshidans, so Hans personally takes over, overwhelming the Avatar. Before Hans can land the killing blow, Lilith sacrifices herself. The Avatar, in a fit of rage, kills Hans after a short battle. Lilith talks with the Avatar one last time before dying, sending them into tears. However, Ryoma tells them that they cannot give up now, as they are getting closer and that she sacrificed herself to help their cause, giving new hope to the Avatar.

After passing through the Great Staircase in Castle Krakenburg, the Avatar faces off against Xander alone. Elise, hating the idea of seeing her two dear siblings fight intervenes, taking Xander's finishing blow in the Avatar's stead. In her final breaths, Elise pleads with Xander to seek a more peaceful end to their fight. Both the Avatar and Xander grieve for their fallen sisters but Xander insists on finishing the duel. Heartbroken by their sister's death and their brother's seemingly uncaring feelings towards it, the Avatar resolves to end the duel. Though they finally strike him down, they know that Xander was holding back and allowed them to do so. With his final breaths, he tells the Avatar to stop King Garon as it will be the only way to bring true peace to the world.

In the throne room, the Avatar attacks Garon for his actions in the war. They later obtain the Blazing Yato and beat Garon, but he still survives and transforms into the Dusk Dragon of Nohr. The Avatar protects Ryoma and Takumi from being killed, but fall into a near-death state. Inside their mind, they meet Flora, Lilith, Xander and Elise again and quickly realize this is just a dream. The four convince the Avatar to take arms again and fight for their allies, and after a gruesome battle, Garon is defeated. Garon returns to his human form, regaining his memories again before disappearing. The Avatar wonders if what Xander said was true, with Garon being "controlled" by someone else. The Avatar then mourns Azura's death as she had to use her full power on the dragon, which was too much for her, but promises to make the future better for everyone.

At the end of the route, if the female Avatar marries Ryoma, she will rule alongside him as the new queen of Hoshido.

Conquest

Much to the shock of the Hoshidan royal siblings, the Avatar decides to fight for Nohr. Despite their pleas to have them reevaluate the situation based on the tragedy that had just occurred to their mother and the innocent Hoshidan people, the Avatar remains steadfast in their decision as they have unanswered questions that they need to confront King Garon directly. The Avatar and the Nohrian army repels the Hoshidan siblings and their army.

After returning to Nohr, Garon is angered by their surprising return to Nohr, depsite the atrocities that had occurred in Hoshido. The Avatar feigns loyalty to Nohr and Garon decides to send the Avatar to quell an impending rebellion by the Ice Tribe by themselves. Fortunately, Xander overhead why Garon sent them alone and sent Elise, her retainers and Silas to accompany them to the Ice Tribe. When they arrive, they are treated nicely after Kilma, the leader of the Ice Tribe, recognizes Yato. However, he and his tribesmen fight them after knowing the real reason to why they were here, but the Avatar and their allies defeat them. Kilma wonders why he is being spared before the Avatar lets him know, and after hearing the Avatar's words, believes them, stopping the rebellion.

When the Avatar returns, Garon is pleased with their progress, though he quickly becomes angered when Iago reveals that they had assistance. Garon threatens to kill them for disobeying his orders, though he relents when Xander and Elise reveal that they were the ones who assisted them. Garon later sends the Avatar to capture Notre Sagesse.

On the way, they rescue Azura from a group of Hoshidans at Fort Dragonfall. They later arrive at Notre Sagesse where they encounter stiff Hoshidan resistance both in the town and in the Sevenfold Sanctuary, but manage to rout them. The Rainbow Sage gives the Avatar the Grim Yato before he commits suicide due to his long age and potential powers if the Hoshidans captured him again.

The group eventually reaches Cheve, where another battle occurs between the Nohrians and the combined Hoshidan and Chevois forces. The Nohrians come out victorious and the army has spared the lives of the enemy soldiers. The Avatar suddenly hears screaming and it is shown that after the battle, Hans and his men have barged in and started to kill everyone. The Avatar asks Hans to stop this madness, but Hans simply replies that Garon has ordered him to do so. The Avatar then reflects on the bloodshed with Camilla and how she is so calm with all the unnecessary violence occurring. She replies to bury all their feelings deep within their heart and continue as if nothing had happened.

The Avatar eventually meets up with Garon at the Opera House and meets Leo again. During the performance, a songstress appears and causes pain to Garon. Iago and his soldiers attempt to apprehend the songstress, but she has already disappeared before they are able to do anything. Hoshidan assassins led by Kumagera then attack in a bid to end Garon's life to stop the war. The assassination attempt is repelled, and after the battle, Garon orders all the songstresses killed. The Avatar questions this order, angering Garon, though Leo quickly covers them. Away from Garon, Leo asks the Avatar if they have a death wish, and gives them the same response as Camilla. He does reveal that they have done acts of good though, as they have always tried to find a way around his orders if possible.

Unable to cope with the violence, the Avatar finds Azura acting suspiciously and follows her into an unknown land. Mysterious soldiers appear and attack, but Gunter arrives and protects them. The three fight their way through and manage to escape.

Azura later tells the Avatar that Garon is corrupted by a presence and that her dance was used in an attempt to remove the presence, but failed. She tells them that the only way to expose him is by having him sit on the Hoshidan throne, which would mean they would have to support an invasion of Hoshidan. The Avatar reluctantly accepts and makes their way through Hoshidan lands, eventually reaching Castle Shirasagi. After several sacrifices, they enter the throne room to see Garon is actually a water monster. With the help of their siblings, they eventually kill him in battle, but an brainwashed Takumi appears and attacks them. The Avatar falls into a near-death state where they return to the real world with the help of Mikoto and their deceased Hoshidan siblings.

After defeating the Anankos-possessed Takumi, Xander and the Avatar wonder what may have possessed Takumi and Garon but are unable to come up with any conclusions. They soon leave to tell the other soliders that the war is over and search for the now-missing Azura, with the Avatar wondering if they may never see her again. Along with the remaining Hoshidan siblings and their Nohrian family, they attend Xander's coronation as the new king of Nohr.

If the female Avatar marries Xander, she will rule alongside him as the new queen of Nohr.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Revelation

Unwilling to fight against either side, the Avatar chooses to side with neither in hopes of getting Xander and Ryoma to talk. Believing that the Avatar was manipulated by the other side, Xander and Ryoma engage in battle.

Needing a way to draw their attention, the Avatar, Azura, and Felicia/Jakob decide to take down to frontline commanders of both armies and succeeds. Unfortunately, both Xander and Ryoma see this as an act of treason and brands the Avatar and Azura as traitors. With both armies after them, Azura takes them to the Bottomless Canyon and tells them to jump with her into it. After jumping in, they land in an unknown land that Azura introduces as Valla, a mysterious third kingdom that has been orchestrating the war between Nohr and Hoshido following its takeover by Anankos. To ensure that no one can know of this, a curse was placed so that anyone who discusses Valla outside of the kingdom will be killed. With the true villain of the war now made aware to the Avatar, they decide to return to the surface in hopes of combining the Nohrian and Hoshido armies in order to combat this threat.

After a series of battles, the Avatar manages to convince both the Hoshido and Nohr armies into joining their cause. The Hoshidans join them after seeing their honest personality and the Nohrians joining after King Garon becomes unstable and a threat to the kingdom itself. With the Avatar as the uniter of the armies, they lead the army into the Bottomless Canyon where, during the descent, Scarlet is killed by an unknown assailant. After a skirmish, though the Avatar has to break the news of Scarlet's death, the Avatar and Azura are now able to properly explain the true villain to both armies, the King of Valla, Anankos.

On the way to confront Anankos, the Avatar faces several of his resurrected soldiers, including Scarlet, Azura's mother Arete, Mikoto, and Sumeragi. Before Mikoto disappears following her defeat, she reveals that she was born in Valla, that Arete is her sister, and that the Avatar is Vallite royalty. The Avatar is shocked, but they strengthen their resolve to defeat Anankos.

Once the army reaches the Vallite throne room, it is revealed that Gunter is Scarlet's killer and that he was possessed by Anankos for the entire campaign. After Gunter is defeated and freed of Anankos's influence, Anankos himself appears to fight the army. The Avatar's sword is upgraded into the Omega Yato through their brothers's legendary weapons and, following long battle against the degenerated dragon, Anankos is slain and peace is restored to the world. Hoshido, now led by Ryoma, and Nohr, now lead by Xander, make a pact of peace between the previously feuding kingdoms. Azura decides to relinquish the throne to the Avatar, stating that it was their because of their efforts and leadership that Anankos was slain. In addition, both Ryoma and Xander cede some of their land to Valla to help form the new kingdom.

In the case of a male Avatar marrying Niles or a female Avatar marrying Rhajat, the couple eventually adopts two children whom will eventually succeed the Vallite throne.

The Avatar never learns that Anankos is their birth father, nor do they learn that Lilith is their 'sister' due to separate vows of secrecy that Lilith and Mikoto made with Anankos's heart.

Personality

The Avatar is a kind person who cares deeply for the people they love and will come to the aid of anyone who should ask them for it, rapid-firing apologies if they do something to upset others, likely inheriting this habit from their father. Despite having been sheltered throughout all of their childhood, they are quite social and conversational, as well as persuasive to the point of convincing some enemy soldiers to join their cause. Aside from being unusually charismatic and attracting people to them, the Avatar is also mentioned to have a way with animals, as it is said the horses in the stables like them. As they spent the majority of their time growing up within the walls of Northern Fortress, the Avatar is very curious about the outside world, and quite eager to come across new sights. As proven by their support conversations with Silas, however, this trait of theirs has somewhat diminished over time.

As noted by many characters through out the series, the Avatar is quick to trust individuals including Zola in Birthright and Anthony in Revelation, both of which were tasked with killing them by Garon and Anankos respectively, and the shady situations about them. However, both Ryoma and Xander have stated that this trusting nature is what makes the Avatar so trustworthy themselves, and why so many people place their faith in them. According to Ryoma in Revelation, even when they were young, the Avatar displayed an honest and kind mindset, which he described as the traits of a ruler. However, Xander states in Revelation that their naive persona is also their greatest weakness due to the possibility of being manipulated or lured into grave danger, but if not for this trait he nor anyone else would be able to follow them on this path.

While their charisma makes them an excellent leader in skirmishes and the male Avatar's support with Shiro show he's good at discerning an immediate opponent's strengths and weaknesses, both genders lack the vision to handle large-scale battles. Their supports with Leo showcase the Avatar being upset at their inability to command large forces while Leo is upset as his inability to command small ones.

The Avatar has shown strong familial attachments to both the Nohrian and Hoshidan royal siblings, as they are reluctant to fight against either one in their respective routes. When Takumi in Conquest and Leo in Birthright try to kill the Avatar under the pretext of them being a traitor to their home nations, the Avatar always tries to stop them from fighting and spares their lives if possible. Even in Revelation, where the Avatar refuses to side with either country, they cannot bear to see their families go to war with one another. They also form a close relationship with Azura regardless of route, due to their similar backgrounds and because the Avatar can be open with her about their feelings regarding obeying Garon (in Conquest) and knowing about Valla (in Revelation).

The Avatar has shown a wide variety of talents. Kaze's Private Quarter invite quote reveals that they are a great piano player. Some supports notes that they enjoy writing poetry and reading about philosophy. However, they have trouble cooking as they manage to burn tea in their support with Jakob and barely manages to bake palatable cookies with Dwyer.

Their personality varies slightly by gender; the male is more laid-back and sweet, while the female is peppier and more teasing.

The Avatar is also shown to be a very loving and protective parent, shown when they achieve an S-Support with an opposite-sex character. When Kana is attacked by Invaders, they display nothing but righteous fury, stating that they will stain the fields of the Deeprealm with the Invaders' blood in retaliation for trying to harm Kana.

The Avatar also displays three distinct traits in Birthright, Conquest and Revelation:

Birthright

As a result of Mikoto's murder they display aggression towards Nohr, though they dislike the idea of having to fight their former Nohrian siblings. As many unavoidable deaths occur during this route, the Avatar grows increasingly hostile towards King Garon, Hans, and Iago for their disregard for human lives. However, they do their best to minimize casualties on the Nohrian front, only killing when necessary as they spared Zola simply because it is what Mikoto would have done and kept him alive due to the usefulness they could have from him in their onslaught of Nohr.

Conquest

The Avatar is unwilling to take the lives of Hoshidans, even displaying regret in choosing their Nohrian siblings over their blood family, even though they don't agree with Garon's ways. As the route progresses, they are forced to watch as many atrocities occur to the innocent Hoshidans while they are unable to save them, lest they receive Garon's wrath. This results in them trying to change Nohr and to end the war as quickly as possible. They also refrain from taking the lives of Hoshidans as much as possible, resolving to end the war in their own way, a trait that earns Kaze's loyalty. In their supports with Azura in Conquest, the Avatar also suffers from nightmares from having killed Hoshidans when they are presented no choice in the matter.

Revelation

In Revelation, the Avatar's personality is largely unchanged. As a result of the Vallite curse, where if one speaks about Valla outside its borders will cause said person to dissolve and disappear, they struggle with knowing the truth but not being able to say it, thus leading them into unnecessary battles. The only reason they have been able to gather allies is because of their kind and trusting nature, giving them potential as a great leader. This has enabled more forgiving, if not kinder, characters to trust the Avatar as they have either seen their kind-hearted nature knowing that they aren't traitors (e.g. Rinkah and Kaze), they can see that they're desperately asking for trust (e.g. Sakura and Ryoma) or through other means of proof that they mean well and are telling the truth (e.g. Leo and Xander).

Supports

See also: Male Avatar/Supports (Fates), Female Avatar/Supports (Fates)

The Avatar, like their Awakening predecessor, has the ability to form supports with every character in the game. The Avatar can also marry (S-Support) with any character of the opposite gender, including characters that cannot marry other characters and children characters (except Kana). Male Avatars can also form an S-Support with Niles and female Avatars can do the same with Rhajat. Achieving an S-Support will result in the Avatar having a child named Kana whose gender is the opposite of the Avatar's. However, the Avatar cannot have Kana if they have a same-sex S-Support. Nina also will not be available with a Niles same-sex S-Support. Male Avatars can potentially be the father of Shigure. The female Avatar can potentially be the mother of all children characters except Shigure.

It should be noted that if a Male Avatar is chosen, there will not be enough first generation female characters who can S-Support with other characters available. Should the Male Avatar be paired with any of the bachelorettes, one male unit cannot form an S-Support, thus not all children can be recruited. This can be absolved by having them marry Flora, Reina, Scarlet, Anna, or any of the second generation female children.

Overall

Base Class

The Avatar, similar to the one in Awakening, is a mixed bag given that the player decides their stat Boon and Bane at the beginning of the game, altering their overall growth rates and stat caps, as well as their secondary class. However, as the main Lord unit of the game, the Avatar plays a key role in the story and should not have any difficulties getting sufficient training. The Avatar serves as a great supporting unit as their Personal Skill, Supportive, gives any unit they support in battle a 10% hit rate boost as well as a 2 damage increase for their attacks and a 2 damage decrease for incoming damage. The Avatar themselves benefits strongly from Felicia, Jakob, and Gunter whose Personal Skills boost specifically the Avatar in battle when they are supporting them. Silas also benefits from the Avatar's presence on the battlefield as his personal skill activates when the Avatar has half their health left during a map, making the Avatar a great partner for him.

As a Nohr Prince/Princess, their main two skills in this class are Nobility which furthers their experience gain so long as they have it equipped and Dragon Fang which not only has a high activation rate, but helps to boost damage to attacks, especially considering that it is the only attack skill learned in a base tier class, meaning they have an attack skill much sooner than most other units. They have two offensive options: Swords and Dragonstones, though the latter will not be available immediately. Because they can use dragonstones, which now deals magic damage, they have the option to exploit the enemy's lower defensive stats, though it lacks range unlike in Awakening. They are the only unit the game that can wield Yato which, unlike most weapons in Fates, has no drawbacks or negative side effects to compensate, aside from the standard Katana Defense and Resistance drops. In fact, as the story progresses in all three routes, it becomes stronger and gains more bonuses. It also is an important weapon in the final battle as it deals 75% damage to enemies with Dragonskin while everyone else's attacks are reduced by half. It should also be noted that the Avatar is considered a Dragon Unit, regardless of their current class, and is susceptible to Wyrmslayers, Dragon Spirits, Marth's Falchion, and Lucina's Parallel Falchion. Their children will also inherit this special condition.

The Avatar has two promotion options: Nohr Noble and Hoshido Noble. The Nohr Noble class is the Nohr promotion and is more focused on a pure offensive skill set including their first class skill Draconic Hex that drops all stats of all enemies the Avatar engages in battle by 4 and Nohrian Trust which allows them to utilize the battle skills of any support unit. They also gain the ability to use tomes for potentially more magic damage as Dragonstones lack effect diversity and can only attack adjacent enemies. The Hoshido Noble is the Hoshido promotion and is more focused on supportive play highlighted by their new usage of staves. Their skills also supports this with Dragon Ward giving adjacent allies a slight chance to halve all incoming damage and Hoshidan Unity to increase the Avatar's skill activation rates. Although the Nohr Noble and Hoshido Noble are restricted to Conquest and Birthright respectively, the player can use both in Revelation, allowing the Avatar to choose which role they wish to use.

Secondary Class

The Avatar's secondary class is determined by the player at the beginning of the game, though the Songstress, Villager, Wolfskin, and Kitsune classes are unavailable to be chosen. Nevertheless, the player can decide what class will benefit them the most on the playthrough, though all other classes are technically available to the Avatar anyways thanks to their special trait mentioned below.

Partner and Friendship Class Options

The Avatar has the unique ability in the game to support every single unit in the game and marry whoever the player chooses, though same-gender marriage is restricted to Niles and Rhajat. They also are able to use the Friendship Seal to reclass into the base class of as many units as they want so long as they have an A-Support with them and they are the same gender, except for Niles and Rhajat. Other than the restrictions of class placed on Birthright and Conquest since only half of Fates cast are available in each version, in the Revelation story, the Avatar essentially has access to all non-special classes in Fates. Similar to Awakening, as they can have access to all classes, they also can acquire all skills in a single playthrough, due to the fact you can use multiple Eternal Seals at the level cap. This can be sped up with help of StreetPass Avatars or even succeeding playthroughs to gather all skills. If skills are not an issue for the player, the greatest perk is that the Avatar can freely shift between classes to fulfill any role needed in the player's army. The Avatar can create the most unique skill set ups that all other units cannot achieve in a single playthrough or without any assistance of the Unit Logbook or StreetPass, making them the best unassisted taskmasters in a single playthrough.

“Corrin chooses to Smash!”
—Corrin's introduction blurb.
Corrin SSB4

Male Corrin from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

The Avatar, under their default name Corrin (Kamui in the Japanese version), as well as their default Nohr Prince/Princess class appearances in Fates, is a DLC newcomer character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Nobunaga Shimazaki and Cam Clarke reprise their roles as the male Corrin and Satomi Sato and Marcella Lentz-Pope reprise their roles as the female Avatar. They were released on February 3, 2016.

“Blood of Dragons”
—Corrin's Aliases on Punch-Out stage.

Corrin's main weapon is their signature sword, the Yato, in its Omega form. Corrin's unique trait revolves around their ability to shift parts of their bodies into their dragon forms as a reference to the attack animations of the Dragon Fang skill. Several of their standard moves are also references to various attacks in the Nohr Prince/Princess class such as their animation for Luna being their dash attack. For some of their smash attacks and their side special, they transform their arms into spear-like appendages, dealing extra damage if they strike an opponent with the tip of the spear. Their forward smash is unique as they can deal damage to opponents directly in front of them as they charge it since they hold the Yato blade slightly in front of them, allowing the rotating blades to strike an enemy.

Special Moveset

  • Regular Special: Dragon Fang Shot: Corrin charges a projectile attack from their transformed hand, but cannot be stockpiled. Enemies hit by this projectile are temporarily paralyzed. Corrin's hand also transforms during this move, biting any enemies within 1 character length of Corrin after launching this move. The projectile is larger and travels farther and the bite is also stronger and has higher knockback the longer this move is charged.
  • Side Special: Dragon Lunge: Corrin performs a short hop if used on the ground. If Corrin uses Dragon Lunge during this move or while in the air, they will transform their arm into a lance and stab in a downward diagonal angle away from Corrin. If the stab connects with terrain including the floor, walls, or even crates and barrels, Corrin will temporarily suspend themselves in the air. If an enemy is hit during the terrain stab, they will be temporarily pinned. From their suspended position, Corrin can either perform a forward or reverse kick if the player pushes their control stick forward or backwards respectively, jump by pressing up, or cancel by pressing nothing. Like all of Corrin's lance moves, Corrin will deal more damage if the enemy is struck by the tip of their lance.
  • Up Special: Dragon Ascent: Corrin sprouts their wings and launches themselves vertically. The move has a wide attack range and will carry any enemies that makes contact with the move upward with them. Corrin's flightpath using this move can be alterned before the move is executed. With no input, the upward momentum is slightly higher than their standard jump. Pressing towards the direction they are facing will give the move more speed and horizontal movement at a slight cost of some vertical height. Pressing the opposite direction they are facing doubles the vertical height with no horizontal movement.
  • Down Special: Counter Surge: Corrin transforms into their dragon form and counters an incoming attack by stomping on the ground, causing a small surge of water to erupt underneath them, dealing a minimum of 10% damage with a multiplier of x1.2 (originally x1.3 from patch 1.1.4). However, the knockback of this move launches the enemy vertically, rather than horizontally like the rest of the Fire Emblem cast. It also hits on both sides, making it capable of hitting multiple opponents at once. Another unique property is that the counter is that Corrin evades the attack when performing it, meaning that attacks can go through the counter, hitting other opponents behind them before receiving the counter damage.
  • Final Smash: Torrential Roar: Corrin stabs the ground, causing a current a third the distance of Final Destination around them to erupt with a burst of water, dealing 5% damage to all those who are hit by the move. Corrin then transforms into their dragon form and unleashes a huge torrent of water from their mouth, dealing 35% damage.

Corrin CorrinTrophyWiiU Corrin joins the battle from Fire Emblem Fates. Born in Hoshido but kidnapped by Nohr at a young age, Corrin was brought up by Nohrian royalty. Descended from the First Dragons, Corrin has the power to transform into a dragon. In Smash, Corrin can change parts of the body into lance-like hands and feet that have a long reach that deal more damage at the tips.
Corrin (Alt.) CorrinAltTrophyWiiU Corrin's side special, Dragon Lunge, is not normal attack—skewer a surface with a lance-like arm, and it will suspend you in the air. Pin an enemy while doing this, and you can keep them in place and then follow up with a flying kick forward or back or just jump up. You can only thrust the lance once before landing.
Torrential Roar TorrentialRoarTrophyWiiU Corrin blasts two columns of light on either side. If one hits an enemy, Corrin transforms into a fearsome dragon and unleashes a maelstrom that launches anyone unlucky enough to be caught. The light columns shoot straight up for a short moment, so using this move high up after knocking or throwing foes overhead is very effective!

Fire Emblem 0 (Cipher)

The Avatar is illustrated in the trading card game Fire Emblem Cipher with the following cards:

Uses

Male

Male Corrin walks the path of the Dawn Dragon in Cipher, and as such is mostly Hoshidan, though with a couple Nohrian cards similar to his female counterpart. His Series 2 HN, S2N, and S3N are all mirrors of female Corrin's corresponding cards, with Nohr where female Corrin says Hoshido and vice versa. His Starter Deck Exclusive is also very similar to its counterpart in that it provides decent support with a Skill that adds 10 ATK to all Units while you control at least four Units, but is aimed towards battling Black cards for its second Skill. His Series 2 SR allows the player to either freely Deploy an extra Cost 2 or lower Unit and then add 30 ATK to all Units for the turn or destroy an enemy Unit and add one Hoshidan card from the Retreat to the hand. However, like female Corrin, this card has high costs, so players should be careful about Skill spamming. His Series 3 SR allows you to freely destroy an enemy Unit by Tapping himself and 2 other Units instead of Reversing Bonds, but he can then Untap if the other Units Tapped were both Hoshidan. He also has a +40 vs Dragons, but only if you have a White Bond. Overall, male Corrin does a good job of showing off Hoshido's finest abilities, and, unlike his female counterpart, has a decent Promotional Exclusive that can gain extra attack for every Hoshidan card you control.

Female

Female Corrin walks the path of the Dusk Dragon in Cipher, mainly appearing as part of Nohr's Black cards, focused mainly on wiping huge numbers of enemy Units at a time, but also appearing as Hoshidan White cards to a lesser degree. Her Series 2 HN card allows her to also be treated as a Hoshidan card while on the Field, showcasing her duality as the Avatar character, but it also reflects her choice of Nohr, as she gains a little extra attack while you have at least two Black Bonds. Her Series 2 N card isn't great and should be avoided, as it requires Azura to be on the Field or else you suffer a penalty of Reversing one Bond when she is Deployed. Her S2SR card has heavy destructive capabilities, with one Skill allowing her to automatically destroy any three enemy Units that aren't the Main Character, and one Skill increasing all allied Units' ATK by 20 until the end of your opponent's next turn, as well as then gaining 1-2 Range. Both Skills are rather high-cost, however, so players should be careful about spamming Skills. Her Series 3 N card reflects her Revelation-Path choice, increasing her attack slightly while you have both Black and White Bonds. Her Series 3 SR also reflects Revelation by having a Black card bonus/requirement on both her Skills, with her first Skill automatically Deploying a free Cost 3 or lower Unit from the Retreat and then Untapping her if the Deployed Unit was a Black card, and her +40 vs Dragon Units only being active while you have a Black Bond. Her Starter Deck Exclusive provides decent support as it moves an enemy Rearguard Unit to the Vanguard when she defeats a foe, but overall it's rather forcibly aimed at battling White decks, as its second Skill requires her to be attacking a White card. Overall, Female Corrin does an excellent job of showcasing the best of the Nohrian cards' strategies, with exception of her Promotional Exclusive, which only has one Skill that requires your opponent's only Unit to be their Main Character, making it a card mostly obtained for the risqué artwork, as she is showing part of her breasts in the art, and for collectors attempting to collect all the Promotional cards so they can show off their complete set.

In the end, both Corrins' cards are excellent for their respective colors, but - along with the majority of other cards in their respective colors - seem to be designed specifically to fight with/against each other to a degree not many Cipher colors have.

Etymology

In Hinduism, an Avatar is a terrestrial manifestation of a deity. The term is commonly used to refer to an entity that represents the player in a video game.

Kamui is the word for a divine being in Ainu mythology, although it is almost never written with kanji in modern times. Kamui is also a Japanese word; in a more general Japanese context, Kamui refers to the might and majesty of the gods, particularly the Shintō Kami. This is more to tie the Avatar's roots to the Hoshido kingdom which is based on feudal Japan.

Corrin may be a variation of Corin which is the French variant of Quirinus. Quirinus was the Sabine god of war. This could be a reference to the conflict between Hoshido and Nohr in which the Avatar is caught in the middle of. Quirinus is also derived from the Sabine word quirus, which means "spear." Corin is also a male Irish name meaning 'spear bearer', further referencing how the Avatar is forced to take up arms by circumstances.

Quirinus was also an epithet of Janus, the two-faced Roman god of beginnings, transitions, doors and endings. This two-faced nature could represent the Avatar's dual nature as Royalty of both Hoshido and Nohr, and the role of presiding over the beginning and end of conflict, hence war and peace, is a part of FE14's story. It is also notable that "Quirinus" is phonetically similar to the Kirin, which is a variant spelling of "Qilin"; this was a mythical, cloven-hoofed, two-horned beast that was prominent in Eastern Asian culture and which the Avatar's dragon form strongly resembles.

Corrin may also be a variation of Corinne which is, in turn, the English and French variant of Corinna. It derives itself from the Greek word κόρη (kore), meaning "maiden." In Greek mythology, this is the epithet of Persephone, who was kidnapped from her mother, Demeter, by Hades to become his wife. This could be reflecting the Avatar's own kidnapping from their family at the hands of King Garon. Also, after Persephone was kidnapped, Demeter, who was the goddess of the harvest, neglected her duties in her search for her daughter, resulting in poor crop harvests and harsh weather. Interestingly, these are exactly the same conditions that Nohr, the kingdom in which the Avatar is raised in, is subjugated to.

Corinna is also the name of a Greek Lyric Poet from the 5th century BCE. It fell into common usage following the 17th century poem "Corinna's going a-Maying" by Robert Herrick, whilst Corrine did not become popular until Madame de Staël's 19th century novel of the same name. This may be another reference to Nohr as it is based on 5th to 19th century Europe.

Corinth is the name of the Greek city in which Oedipus was raised. Oedipus was a prince in Greek legend who was born as the prince of Thebes but raised as the prince of Corinth, who shares a similar story to that of the Avatar, having been prophesized to kill his own birth father and become king of the land of his birth, as the Avatar does in Revelation.

Trivia

  • Both Avatars' official artwork depicts them wielding Yato.
  • The Avatar and Azura are proven to be cousins during Revelation/Supports.
  • In the English and Japanese versions of the game, the Avatar shares their voice actors with other characters.
  • If the Avatar is male, there will be an equal amount of male and female royal siblings (5 males and 5 females). However, if the Avatar is female, the majority amount of royal siblings will be female (4 males and 6 females).
  • The male Avatar in Fates is the second playable male unit to wield Dragonstones after Bantu.
    • Both genders of the Avatar are the only Lord character that are able to use Dragonstones.
    • While in their dragon form, they have a watery effect with occasional water splashes under their feet and bubbles.
  • While the female Avatar can freely reclass into all non-special classes in Revelation using nothing but Friendship Seals, the Male Avatar does not have this ability as the Oni Savage and Apothecary classes are not available to them without having to marry a character who has the classes or have the classes as their secondary class.
  • The Avatar's default name in the Japanese version is shared with Kamui from Fire Emblem Gaiden.
  • The original official artwork of the female Avatar shows her having two left feet. This is most likely an overlooked error. The artwork on the official website was later modified to show the correct feet.
  • According to Kozaki, the Avatar was given bare feet due to the animalistic impression he had after hearing of their strong ties to dragons, along with creating a "hook" for players equivalent to other characters in the game.
  • In the boxart covers for Birthright and Conquest, the male Avatar is depicted on the Hoshido side, while the female Avatar is on Nohr's side.
    • Incidentally, in the Cipher trading card game, the male Avatar is often shown as a Hoshido Noble (the Avatar's Hoshido-exclusive class change) while the female Avatar is often shown as a Nohr Noble (the Avatar's Nohr-exclusive class change). In third series of the trading card game, the master cards of the Male Avatar depict him as a Nohr Noble and the Female Avatar is depicted as a Hoshido Noble.
      • In both the second and third series of Fates' characters in the Cipher trading card game, the male Avatar is always shown with his Hoshido siblings, and the female Avatar is always with her Nohr siblings. This extends into when the Hoshido siblings are shown in Nohr exclusive classes for the Male Avatar, and the Nohr siblings were shown in Hoshido exclusive classes for the Female Avatar.
    • This also applies to their respective Kanas in the Heirs of Fate DLC - female Kana follows Hoshidan characters, uses Noble/Blazing Yato and is a Hoshido Noble in later parts, while male Kana follows Nohrian characters, uses Grim/Shadow Yato and is a Nohr Noble in later parts.
  • The Avatar is the first Lord character in the series to have a branching promotion from their base class (only in Revelation route).
  • The female Avatar came in 1st in the Nintendo Official Popularity Poll for females while the male Avatar came in 5th for males.
    • The Avatar came 3rd in the character popularity poll issued by Nintendo Dream.
    • The female Avatar of Fates is the only Avatar in the series to place first in an official popularity poll.
  • In The Making of Fire Emblem 25th Anniversary Book early concept art show that the Avatar at one point was going to have the Nohrian royal color scheme but was scrapped for the black and silver color scheme instead. This early concept also depicted the Avatar with longer ears similar in length to Tiki's.
    • The designer and development team apparently had trouble deciding the Avatar's hair color; white hair was their first choice but was changed to black (which they likely inherited from their mother Mikoto) before reverting back to the original default hair color.
  • With 89 in-game support conversations (69 normal/romantic supports and 20 children supports), the female Avatar has the highest number of unique conversations out of all characters in Fates and the Fire Emblem franchise as a whole.
  • This Avatar is the only first-party DLC Newcomer in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
    • They are also the only DLC character with gender variants.
    • They are the only Fire Emblem representative to not enter a stage via a Warp circle.
    • While Fates was released in Japan prior to Corrin's release, Corrin is one of the few characters to debut in Smash internationally prior to their flagship game's release; Marth, Roy, and Lucas are the others.
      • With the release of Fates in Japan in 2015 and international release of Fates in 2016, Corrin is the most recent character in the Smash series by the release date of their original game.
    • Female Corrin's tights were altered in Smash 4 to cover her inner thighs, likely to maintain Smash 4's ESRB rating of E10+.
      • Ironically, female Corrin was not altered in Fire Emblem Heroes despite the game having an ESRB rating of E10+.
  • The male Avatar can have an S-Support with the also male Niles, while the female Avatar can S-Support the also female Rhajat. This makes them the first lead characters of the series who can potentially marry characters of the same gender.
    • Unlike the Japanese version, the English version supports between both genders are identical to one another.
  • The Avatar has three unique critical quotes depending on which route you take.
    • This makes the Avatar the only character in Fates with more than 4 critical quotes.
  • The Avatar has the most retainers out of both royal families, having 5. They are Felicia, Flora, Jakob, Gunter, and Kaze (if an A-Support is achieved.)
  • The eyebrows of both the male and female Avatars will always be black regardless of what hair color the player chooses.
  • The Fire Emblem Fates Drama CD reveals that the female avatar is afraid of bugs.
  • Corrin (Male and Female versions) was announced to have an amiibo on December 15, 2015 but did not have an official release date announcement on January 18th, 2017. This makes the Corrin amiibo as well as the Bayonetta and Cloud amiibo having the longest period between its initial announcement and retail release.
