—Captain Berling
Crossed Roads is the prologue of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. It contains the first tutorial of the game, teaching the player the basic controls.
Story[]
The story begins with a mercenary (default name: Shez) waking up in an outpost on the border between the Adrestian Empire and the Leicester Alliance. Shez is reminded by Getz, a fellow member of Captain Berling's mercenary company, that their task is to rout Jeralt's Mercenaries. Rumor has it that they are being led by a fighter known only as the "Ashen Demon" (default name: Byleth).
Together with Getz, Lazley, and Captain Berling, Shez defeats some of the mercenaries, but Byleth soon arrives and decimates Berling's company. Shez challenges Byleth to avenge their fallen comrades, but the Ashen Demon easily outmatches them. On the verge of death, a mysterious entity awakens a new power within Shez to give them an opportunity to turn the tables, but it is still not enough. Jeralt calls Byleth off, telling them that their job is complete.

Trivia[]
- The battle against Byleth is designed to be impossible to win. Even after gaining access to Awakening mode (which lasts for the duration of the chapter), Shez cannot deal much damage to Byleth, and still takes hundreds of HP in damage per hit. On the flipside, it is impossible for Shez to die in this chapter, as they will continue to fight even at 1 HP.
- All of Byleth's attacks break Shez's guard when Shez is a Myrmidon, but Shez can guard against them as normal after becoming a Fluegel.
