Dexterity (, Waza, lit. Technique), also called Skill in titles prior to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, is a character stat that affects a unit's hit rate and critical hit rate. It is also used to determine the activation rate of skills such as Lethality and Aether in certain games.

For the purposes of clarity/consistency, this article refers to the stat as Dexterity for all titles.

Effects[]

In combat, the Dexterity stat is one of several factors that affect an attacking unit's hit rate. When all other factors are held constant, the Dexterity stat is directly proportional to hit rate; i.e., higher Dexterity stat values equate to higher hit rates. Additionally, the Dexterity stat is one of many factors that influence an attacking unit's critical hit rate. As with hit rate, when all other factors are held constant, the Dexterity stat is directly proportional to critical hit rate. For an in-depth article on critical hit rate, see Critical rate.

Some Fire Emblem titles feature class and/or character-specific skills that affect a unit's offensive, defensive, or supportive abilities when activated. The activation rate of certain skills is influenced by the Dexterity stat value in one way or another. The Dexterity stat is directly proportional to the activate rate of these skills.

In Fire Emblem Awakening, the Dexterity stat influences the probability of activating a dual strike whenever units are paired up. It is directly proportional to the activation rate of dual strikes.

In Fire Emblem Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, which are action games with character-leveling systems rather than strategy RPGs, the Dexterity stat works differently in these titles. In both games, the Dexterity stat governs how much damage a weakpoint smash/critical rush deals. In the original FEW, the Dex stat is also the stat that dictates the strength of both Warrior and Awakening Specials, rather than Strength or Magic. This has a knock-on effect that results in units like Elise having weaker than normal Specials than most of the cast due to having a lower maximum Dexterity.

In TearRing Saga: Berwick Saga, there is no unified Dexterity stat. Instead, there is a collection of "weapon skill" stats, which encompass each individual weapon type, magic type, and shields. In practice, the stat is closer to the weapon level system seen in the Fire Emblem series than a traditional character stat. Compared to other stats in the game, weapon skill grows much faster due to both an above average growth rate, and also having a chance to grow after every battle in which the relevant weapon/magic/shield type was used. Almost all characters require their weapon skill to be at least a certain level before they can promote. This weapon skill stat does not affect critical hit rate until it is above 50.
