Dismount (乗り降り, Noriori) is a command that first appeared in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem.

Overview[]

The Dismount command, introduced in Mystery of the Emblem, is a command specifically available to mounted units that ride horses, Pegasi, or wyverns. When used, the unit climbs off of their mount and become an on-foot version of their class. Often, units that are dismounted may be limited to wielding swords while on foot. Dismounted units also have reduced movement with the tradeoff of benefitting from the bonuses of forests or similar terrain, and also negates the Weapon effectiveness of horse-slaying or flying-slaying weapons.

To date, the Dismount command is featured in Mystery of the Emblem, Thracia 776, Three Houses, the spin-off Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga, and, to a very limited extent, in Genealogy of the Holy War.

Mystery of the Emblem/Genealogy of the Holy War/Thracia 776[]

In chapters of Mystery of the Emblem and Thracia 776 that take place indoors, mounted units will automatically dismount when deployed. In chapters that feature both exterior and interior spaces, mounted characters are required to dismount before they can move from an exterior to an interior space.

In Genealogy of the Holy War, the Dismount command is available only to Seliph, and only after he has promoted to Knight Lord. There is no specific advantage to Seliph dismounting, however, and dismounting in Genealogy is known to be prone to bugs that can render the game impossible to finish without starting over from a prior save.

Dismounting in Thracia 776 heavily decreases the effectiveness of lance and axe using classes who are not able to use lances and axes on foot and can not use swords while mounted. In most such cases, a character like Glade begins with a sword Weapon Rank of E, meaning they have to train heavily to avoid being helpless indoors. This also leaves the player with no indoor lance users other than latecomer Xavier and a promoted Dalsin, both of whom had their lance skills at Rank E. Arch Knights Selphina and Robert, however, still use their bows while dismounted as they are unable to ever equip swords. One advantage of dismounting is that the units will gain more experience when fighting on foot than they would on horseback.

This wasn't much of an issue in Mystery of the Emblem and TearRing Saga. Both games feature the common Weapon Level stat and powerful indoor lance users like Dolph, Draug, Lionel, and Sheena. The Commando Knight and male Dragon Knight classes in TearRing Saga also retained their usage of lances indoors.

Three Houses/Three Hopes[]

Dismounting in Three Houses is executed as a free action either before or after moving but not both, preventing a player from keeping a unit dismounted before and after the turn while moving with mounted movement. Otherwise, this mechanic is very useful in many ways. Other than avoiding weapon effectiveness damage multipliers against mounted units, Flying Units gain benefits from terrain bonuses when they dismount but lose 2 points of speed while Horseback Units gain 2 speed when dismounted but already had access to terrain bonuses. Mounted Master classes have additional stat changes, where as Falcon Knights loses 1 point in Strength when dismounting as well as the 2 Speed. Dismounting also allows the unit to use Gauntlets, which they otherwise were unable to use.

Dismounting in Warriors: Three Hopes is a mid-battle action that all playable units in cavalry and flying classes are able to do, either to the currently controlled unit by hitting L+B or by selecting "Dismount" in the Others tab while selecting a specific unit on the map screen while in battle. This is purely to avoid weapon effectiveness damage if players do not have any Aurora or Lampos Shields to spare, or were taken by surprise by enemy reinforcements bearing class effectiveness weapons. While Dismounted, these classes play much like the previous infantry classes within their respective class trees:

  • A Dismounted Great Knight will have the Armored/Fortress Knight moveset, specifically Fortress Knight.
  • Dismounted cavalry and Pegasus classes will have the Soldier moveset.
  • Dismounted Wyvern classes will have the Fighter moveset, though Dismounted Wyvern Rider will have the Brigand class's class action attack and bar length, while Dismounted Wyvern Lord will have the Warrior class's.
  • and a Dismounted Bow Knight will have the Archer/Sniper moveset, with Wyvern Master & Barbarossa also behaving like this.

Dismounting is also the only way for Hilda, Caspar, Bernadetta, Shamir, Ashe, Ignatz, and the Gatekeeper to retain use of their unique Warrior Specials while they are in their respective recommended Master rank classes, with the Gatekeeper in particular being affected by this particular choice of gameplay decision making, as his unique Warrior Special is tied to the Soldier class moveset.
