“I...must return home alive. My family is waiting for me...”
—Dorcas in a support conversation with Geitz

Dorcas is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. He is first seen in Lyndis' story but joins Eliwood's group later on with his old friend Bartre, who also is a fighter.

Profile[]

Lyn's Story[]

Originally a mercenary working for a group of bandits Lyn and her friends are fighting, Dorcas defects to Lyn after learning that she is protecting his wife Natalie from the very same people he is working for. When asked why he is working as a mercenary, he responds that he is only doing so to earn money for his ill wife's treatments. Resolving to aid Lyn on her journey to Caelin, Dorcas helps her to defeat Lundgren. Following this, Dorcas returns home to Natalie, where he finds work as a mercenary fighting to protect the area from bandits.

Eliwood and Hector's Story[]

Later in Chapter 11 of Eliwood's story, Dorcas lends his aid to Eliwood's party along with his rival and friend, Bartre. In Hector's mode, the pair join when Eliwood's party is encountered in Chapter 12.

On encountering Lyn in Chapter 15E/16H, Dorcas reveals that some time after Lyn's group had defeated Lundgren, he and Natalie had moved to Lycia and settled down in Pherae, where Natalie remains, awaiting Dorcas's return.

At the end of this journey, Dorcas earns the money he needs and returns home to Natalie. Here, he unhesitatingly pays for her medical treatments, thereafter living out the rest of his life in peace with her.

Personality[]

Dorcas is a reserved man, contrasting starkly to the more brash and headstrong Bartre. Despite this, Dorcas is known to love his wife, Natalie, dearly, willing to go to to any lengths necessary to obtain the money to treat her ailment, even resorting to banditry.

Dorcas has also been portrayed to avoid taking charity from anyone, choosing to earn his keep by his own means. This is exemplified through him declining Bartre's offer to try and get a raise from Eliwood. However, he is willing to swallow his pride if it’s for the sake of Natalie, such as when he accepts the money Farina lends him.

Dorcas starts out as a fairly effective unit, with his good availability and high early attacking power both being points in his favor. His defenses are low, but he is durable enough due to very high HP to soak up a few hits. He also has a good weapon type in the form of axes, which grants him a strong 1-2 range option and weapon triangle advantage over enemies like Knights, Soldiers, Wyvern Riders, and the most common variety of Cavaliers. With availability in Lyn Mode, he can even potentially develop a level lead by the time he joins in the main campaign.

However, Dorcas' otherwise good stats are heavily marred by his lack of Speed. While his base of 6 is quite passable (particularly when compared to Bartre's), his horrendously low 20% growth and lack of Speed gain upon promotion means that Dorcas will generally fail to double anything faster than a Soldier or Knight. This is especially troublesome considering that Blazing Blade's enemies are notoriously slow, making Dorcas stand out in a very negative light in comparison to other playable characters. Even at level 20, Dorcas tends to average around 13 Speed, which still isn't fast enough to reliably double some enemies in Hard Mode's lategame. His promotion is also very lackluster, as it only grants him E-rank bows; this is hardly necessary when he already has ranged options and his attacking power with a bow is barely higher than with an axe, even against enemy fliers. Combined with the fact that the Hero Crest is a highly contested item among the likes of Raven and Guy, it is very difficult to justify using Dorcas for any kind of prolonged period after the early game.

Base Set[]

Dorcas was a strong axe infantry unit upon his release, but like many Book I units, his performance diminished with time and is for the most part, still a formidable unit, but overlooked. He has excellent Atk and physical bulk, scoring 80. His magical bulk is a tad lower only scoring 69 neutral, but his Spd is a low point at 23. Though he is not an armor unit, his base kit perfectly suits him to become a potent enemy phase unit with most of the standard skills required to perform the role as an infantry unit.
Stout Tomahawk has the sole effect of being able to counterattack a foe regardless of their distance. While this means that he can only initiate at close range, he can reliably hit back at his opponent at any range, freeing his Skill A for a plethora of synergistic skills.
Draconic Aura boosts his Atk by 30%, leading to some truly spectacular results if he is able to buff himself to a high enough level to exploit this. Fierce Stance Gives him an additional +6 Atk during combat, further bolstering his damage output and his Special. Quick Riposte is the perfect Skill B as it ensures that he double attacks during the enemy turn so long as he stays above 70% before combat. Infantry Pulse also serves nicely with him as any ally with a least 1 less Max HP gains a special cooldown charge, bolstering some of the highest damage infantry units, especially mages, into their special threshold to demolish the enemy.

Counters[]

Dorcas covers his Spd during the enemy phase, but a host of units can double him and withstand his hits, especially fast Red units like Ayra, Owain, and Karla. Even some of the middling units can achieve this like Alfonse, Saber, and Joshua. He is weak to explosive mages and common AOE red mages can do so with ease such as Lilina and Sanaki. Brave Lyn and her Sacae's Blessing completely negates his Distant Counter effect while Dazzling Staff/Wrathful Staff units can do the same while targeting his much lower Res.

Skill Inheritance[]

Reposition is the standard support skill for any direct attacker to move allies out of danger. Bonfire gives true damage rather than a flat Atk boost, thus is a better option for a special given Dorcas' solid Def. To maximize his enemy turn performance Fierce Breath or Steady Breath give him additional Atk and Def respectively while also accelerating his cooldowns. If willing to invest, giving him Aether on top of the Breath skills will not only improve his damage, but give him sustain thanks to the healing effect of Aether.

Base Set[]

Contrary to his appearance, Halloween Dorcas is an Armor Axe unit who, unsurprisingly, has incredible stat at the small cost of limited movement. For a Tempest Trial unit, Halloween Dorcas makes an excellent merge unit comparable to Sheena. His stats remain similar to his infantry form, having excellent Atk and even better physical bulk than before. His magical bulk is a bit on the low side and his Spd is still on the low end, but just like his base form, he can make up for this thanks to skills, especially the new ones at his disposal as an armor unit.
Hack-o'-Lantern slows down the enemy's special charge per attack and prolongs his survivability. It not only serves him well, but it also is a valuable inheritable axe that can be utilized by many other bulky axe units like Sheena and Beruka.
Swap is a solid support skill, allowing him to exchange places with an ally that he uses on him, giving him a means of pseudo-movement. Sturdy Stance grants him Atk/Def +4, boosting his damage and physical bulk. Wary Fighter prevents his opponent from performing a follow-up attack as long as he is over 50% HP at the start of combat.

Counters[]

Halloween Dorcas does not have Distant Counter in his base kit, thus unless facing off against one that has it, Tome users and Staff users with Wrathful Staff are the best option to exploit his lower Res. If Distant Counter is run, staff users can use Dazzling Staff as well to prevent his counter. As an armor unit, Armor effective weapons also shred through him, making units like Hana, Tobin, and Caeda powerful checks. Micaiah and her various forms can also shred through him thanks to her magic and armor effective weapons. Her Festival incarnation is particularly strong thanks to having a color advantage. Bulky Reds can easily withstand a hit or two from him and retaliate.

Skill Inheritance[]
Pivot can be considered instead of Swap as it has more "movement" by placing Haloween Dorcas on the opposite adjacent tile of his ally, rather than switching places. Ignis is a powerful special that takes advantage of his high Def and with standard armor skills like Bold Fighter/Vengeful Fighter, he can easily charge this during the player or enemy turn respectively by guaranteeing a follow-up. Fierce Breath or Steady Breath allows him to boost his Atk or Def respectively and charge his specials faster. If he does not get any of these acceleration effects. Bonfire charges quickly and deals decent damage still. Distant Counter allows him to check ranged units and can exceptionally take hits from Bow and Dagger units. Finally Skill C can be filled with Armor related skills, especially Armor March to give his allies additional movement, though the stat boosting related ones can be inherited if another teammate of his has it. Otherwise, skills to suit mixed teams come in many forms from Smoke and Wave skills.

Trivia[]

  • Dorcas appears in an American ad for The Blazing Blade, as the speaker poisons Dorcas' mutton, and he dies after eating it.
    • In the English version of Heroes, one of Dorcas' quotes has him claiming that he "had some bad mutton earlier", alluding to the scene in the commercial.
    • Additionally, he has a fourth select quote: "Trust nobody", referencing to the commercial's tag line "Build an army, trust nobody."
      • The line itself has become somewhat of an inside joke within the Fire Emblem community.
  • Humorously, Dorcas will attack Natalie while he is still an enemy unit (only possible on Lyn's Hard mode), thus resulting in a game over.
  • Despite Dorcas' credits quote (if he was defeated in Lyn's story) saying that he never saw her again, he does meet her again if he doesn't die in Eliwood's story before Lyn is recruited.
  • Dorcas came in 12th place for males in the 2017 Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends popularity poll. He came in 21st place for overall votes.
  • Dorcas shares his English voice actor, Kirk Thornton, with Yen'fay in Fire Emblem Awakening and Surtr in Fire Emblem Heroes.

Etymology[]

Dorcas (originally a girl's name) is pronounced DOR-kuss. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "gazelle", or "deer". Dorcas was a disciple of Joppa found in the Book of Acts 9:36–42 of the Bible. She was a dressmaker who made clothes for the poor in her village. She later died of an illness; however, she was brought back to life upon Peter's prayer.
