Durban the Berserker was one of the Eight Legends that defeated the Demon Dragon during The Scouring, and was framed by future generations as the Berserker.

Profile[]

Durban wielded Armads, one of the legendary weapons of Elibe. According to legend, Durban was said to be an absolutely colossal man who laid waste to even the most powerful opponents with his Herculean strength. Durban founded the Western Isles in the aftermath of the Scouring and hid his axe in a secret cave filled with toxic gas.

His axe, Armads, is effective against dragons and is charged with thunder, according to Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade.

In The Blazing Blade, Hector claims this axe and talks to the spirit of Durban, finally putting him to rest.

Due to his title, the Berserker, it can be assumed that he is either of that class or a custom version of it, as the surviving Legends are.

Etymology[]

'Durban' is a variant of 'Turpin,' the name of the warrior-priest in the medieval epic poem "The Song of Roland." In the poem, an army of French knights, led by Roland, fights against an overwhelmingly larger force of Saracens, and though all the French knights dramatically die one by one, they manage to hold the pass and defeat all the Saracens as well. Roland is the last to die, and Turpin, the bishop, who first urged the army to fight by declaring that battle was 'penance for their sins,' is the second-to-last. He is impaled with four spears and nevertheless manages to kill 400 more Saracens before he finally blesses Roland and dies. His sword was named Almace, from which the name Armads is derived.
