Throughout the series, the amount of equipment a character can carry has varied. Some games split a character's equipment into two sections, one for weapons and the other for items, whereas some use a combined inventory.
- In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, each character has a single inventory of 4 slots.
- In Fire Emblem Gaiden, each character has a single inventory of 1 slot.
- In Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, each character has a weapon inventory of 4 slots and an item inventory of 4 slots.
- In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, each character has a single inventory of 7 slots.
