First Tier (or Base) classes are basic, unpromoted classes in the Fire Emblem Series at which most of both playable units and enemies start off. When First Tier units reach level 10 or higher, they can be promoted using a promotion item such as a Master Seal. The item needed depends on the game. In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, a unit may promote simply by leveling up to level 21. Most Lords start as first tier, although there are exceptions, such as Ike in Radiant Dawn, where he starts as a Second Tier unit. Lords such as Eliwood and Micaiah will automatically promote at certain events in the story, regardless of their levels.
In Three Houses the First Tier is essentially split in two - the Beginner tier which encompasses four most basic non-trainee classes, and which characters can certify for on level 5, and Intermediate tier which encompasses classes that are generally first tier in other games, and which characters can certify for starting with level 10.
