“I can't be a bandit forever. I'm lookin' for a new line of work that'll put food on the table.”
—Garret in a support conversation with Larum in The Binding Blade.

Garret is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He is an unwilling bandit with a heart of gold.

Profile

Garret's parents were assassinated by bandits when he was a kid. He seeked revenge against every single one of the assassins that killed his mother. But chasing revenge like that made him lost in the way of life, and he became the thing he hated most. He didn't like to work as a bandit but due to his life circumstances, couldn't find other way to make money.

When Roy and his army were trying to rescue Fae in the Etrurian Border, Garret was a mercenary deployed by the enemies, fighting for Bern. Lilina, noting his reluctance to battle, intercepted him on his way to a village and convinced him to join them with the promise to end the war and a future that he wouldn't need to fight anymore. After hearing Lilina's words, he gladly swapped sides and joined Lycia's army, as he hated bandit life.

During the campaign, he starts a 'journey' to seek a new occupation for once the war is over. After observing Larum and Geese, he considers following their steps and become a sailor or entertainer, but quickly drops the idea after realizing he was not fit for the jobs.

After the war, he becomes a simple farmer, living as a civilian and never picking his axe again, as he always wished.

Personality

Garret hated his work as a mercenary, but was the only way he could make the ends meet. Due to that, he’s incredibly hardened, cynical, and resentful to the world, as he didn't know what else to turn to make money. He does have is a genuine desire to lead a peaceful life and reform himself though, and states that the bandits that work under him don't kill unnecessarily.

Due to his harsh life, despite caring to others, he feels awkward being openly kind to his peers. In his support with Lilina, he confronts her, due to her being gullible for giving her expensive necklace to a stranger man. But upon realizing that she has good intentions and has a optimistic heart, he reluctantly softens to her. In their A support, he gives a necklace to her, but if he whether bought it and gifted her, or truly recovered it from the one who had supposedly stolen it, is left ambiguous. He also becomes close to Gonzales who calls him master, but doesn't acknowledge their similarities as mercenaries. Overall, he wants to find an honest work and leave his past behind, and is eager to learn new things that can make him a better person.

Overall

Secret Book (Artwork)
Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Garret is filler at best and ignorable at worst. With relatively high Skill for an axe-user, he is quite accurate, and boasts an impressive 21 Strength on Hard. 55 HP and 10 Defense means that he will not die easily. He is surprisingly light by the standards of a Berserker, having similar Constitution to an unpromoted Dieck, which allows him to be carried relatively easily by most characters while not losing Speed from most axes. His main issue is his low Speed and weapon rank which limits his offenses. While C axes lets him use killer axes (which are one of the most accurate axes in the game), he is unable to use the Brave Axe or Armads for a while.

During Chapter 21, he can be somewhat useful. He can distract a large amount of enemy reinforcements by moving on to the peaks for a huge boost in avoid. This is helpful if the player is struggling with transporting units around the mountains and reinforcement zones in time.

Ending

Garret - Retired Outlaw (歴戦の狂戦士 Rekisen no kyō senshi, Veteran Berserker)
"Garret quit banditry and led the life of a farmer. He worked and tended his crops like an ordinary citizen and lived in peace. After the war, he never picked up his axe again."

Etymology

Garret's name is derived from Sir Gareth, a knight of the round table of Arthurian mythology, meaning "Gentle".

Following a pattern, the Elibe games heavily rely on Le Morte d'Arthur and Le Chanson de Roland for names.
