Godfrey was the son and heir of Duke Oswald von Riegan, the current head of House Riegan and leader of the Leicester Alliance. He presumably held a Crest of Riegan due to his status as House Riegan's heir. Sometime before Imperial Year 1179, Godfrey perished in an apparent accident, throwing House Riegan's line of succession into disarray as Duke Riegan's remaining offspring, Tiana, had been missing for several years and the Duke himself was gravely ill. In 1179, Oswald ended the uncertainty by announcing that his heir would be Claude, his grandson through Tiana.

A damaged book titled "Burnt Remnants of a Report" found in the Shadow Library of Abyss indicates that the Church of Seiros believed Godfrey's death may have been the result of foul play, not an accident. The incident was seemingly not the first time an heir of House Riegan had died under suspicious circumstances, and the Knights of Seiros were certain that Count Gloucester was deeply involved, but the report's writer opined that Gloucester ordering Godfrey's assassination was "too conspicuous", implying another party may have been behind it.
