“The soil itself don't want us here! Nothin' grows! Tryin' to till a field is like sawing through rock! All I wanted was a full belly, but you let that wench Eyvel cheat you outta the good land! She's got you wrapped around her little finger! You so desperate that you'd let everybody starve just to get lucky? Shame on you, old man!”
—Gomes talking to Dagdar

Gomes is a boss character encountered in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. He is a member of the Mount Violdrake Bandits under Dagdar. After the gang quit banditry, Dagdar put them under farming the barren inhospitable Thracian land. As his hunger and desperation grew, Gomes eventually steered the gang into raiding villages and turning on Dagdar. Gomes is eventually killed or captured and let go by Leif and Dagdar.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

To players who have conquered The Blazing Blade's Batta the Beast, Gomes' title, 'Gomes the Invincible,' might seem comically familiar. Unfortunately Gomes actually possesses the stats to back his claim up. There is no way around it: Gomes is incredibly powerful relative to his point in the game. Prior to Gomes, all of the bosses other than the comparatively weak Rumei have either been deprived of a throne or easy prey for the mighty Eyvel. Gomes, on the other hand, rivals several bosses fought later in the game, and even lacks the Armorslayer weakness that plagues the standard General and Baron bosses fought later in the game. His attacking power is strong enough to instantly kill most low-durability units. His speed is high enough to make him virtually immune to doubling, so Follow-up Criticals cannot be relied upon to surpass his incredible defense. Even his skill, which would normally be a weakness for axe units, is absolutely solid.

Thankfully, Gomes possesses a catastrophic weakness to magic, particularly critical strikes from Grafcalibur. As long as the player has recruited Asbel from Chapter 4x, Gomes should be a simple boss to defeat, so long as the player remembers to prevent Gomes from equipping his Steel Bow by diligently rescuing Asbel after attacks. If Asbel is not in the player's party, the Light Brand, Earth Sword, and Fire Sword are the only realistic way of hurting him. Because of his throne's healing powers, it might take several hits to bring him down this way. The player might benefit from using the Holy Water found in the map's top right corner to boost a unit's magical powers.

Gomes can theoretically be captured, though actually capturing him is truly an ordeal. Typically, this would involve an improbably well-trained 20-build Marty landing an also-improbable critical Brave Axe strike on a badly wounded Gomes. It should be noted that Gomes has a high luck stat, so Marty needs a support boost from Dagdar to even have a chance of scoring a critical on Gomes. Wearing away or stealing (requires a 16 build thief) Gomes' gear is another option, but the player will still need a unit with 20 build to capture him. Doing this will earn the player nothing beyond the satisfaction of sparing one of the more sympathetic (and difficult) bosses the game has to offer.
