Gordin is a playable character from the Archanea Series of Fire Emblem. A member of the Altean Knights, Gordin is initially an inexperienced archer who enlisted in the military to serve Altea. Although Gordin starts off fairly weak and unpolished in his archery, he dedicates himself to improving by practicing under the master Sniper Jeorge after the War of Darkness, eventually returning to his homeland afterwards with his brother, Ryan, to assist Marth for the second war.

Gordin appears to be the youngest of the Altean knights in the first war and the closest to Marth in age, though he is depicted as much younger than Marth in the anime. He is noted to have an especially youthful appearance for his age, occasionally causing others to mistake him to be younger than he actually is.

Profile[]

War of Shadows[]

A member of the archer division in the Altean Army, Gordin is the youngest of the first generation of Altean Knights, dreaming of becoming a full-fledged sniper despite his inexperience. Chronologically, Gordin first appears in Prologue IV in Shadow Dragon, where he is taken captive after Altea is invaded by her long-time ally Gra, held in a prison near the border of the country. When news of Marth's imminent arrival reach the region, Gordin is brought forward, gagged and bound, and outfitted in the uniform of a Gra soldier to trap Marth. In doing so, the Gra soldiers hope that Marth would be tricked into believing Gordin to be an enemy, and thereafter retaliate by attacking him.

Gordin's death is, thankfully, prevented, as Marth notices that he is gagged despite supposedly being an enemy. After removing his gag, Marth recognizes Gordin's face immediately, and thereafter allows the archer to fight by his side. However, rescuing Gordin has caused enough delay for the main force of Gra, accompanied by the Sable Order of Knights of Grust led by Jiol, to catch up with Marth. Realizing that they are surrounded by the enemy with little chance of escaping or defeating their foes, the tactician Malledus suggested that a knight, dressed to resemble Marth, should be left behind to act as a decoy to lure the enemy away. Should Gordin be selected to function as the decoy, he will thus be unable to assist his liege in bringing the War of Darkness to a conclusion. Canonically, Gordin is not chosen to be the sacrifice, and after the end of the War of Shadows, he squires himself to an Archanean knight in order to hone his skill with the bow, thereafter returning to Altea with his brother in tow.

War of Heroes[]

In Jeorge's version of Prologue IV in New Mystery of the Emblem, he reveals that he is on a visit to Altea to continue his tutelage of Gordin. After he is bested by the 7th Platoon, he will, instead of personally assisting them due to being an important personage of Archanea, request for Gordin to do so in his stead. Gordin will then assist them until they are given recognition as fully-fledged knights at the end of Prologue VIII.

During the events of Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem and its remake, Gordin will aid Marth in the War of Heroes right from the first chapter. Gordin can potentially encounter Jeorge again as an enemy on the battlefield in Chapter 8, when the Altean army attempts to flee from the pursuing Archanean forces en route to Khadein to seek temporary asylum. Neither desiring to fight nor kill his former teacher in a duel, Gordin pleads for Jeorge to aid them instead, to which he will comply after careful consideration. Gordin will assist Marth until the War of Heroes finally ends, thereafter departing for Pales, the capital of Archanea. He is later revealed to have joined the Archanean free knights, dedicated towards defending civilians from bandits and thieves.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE[]

Gordin appears in Chapter 6 during the first trial to acquire the Opera of Light: Fire Emblem as one of four boss Mirages. He fights alongside Macellan, Dolph, and Linde.

Personality[]

Gordin's personality is, like a majority of the cast appearing in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, left vague due to his limited lines and minor role in the main plot. Nonetheless, it can be inferred that he is strongly patriotic, devoutly loyal to both his country and prince, a fact that is proven by his having dutifully fought alongside Marth for the duration of the two wars. This is further complemented by Gordin's determined attitude, one that is especially evident when he decides to accompany Jeorge on his return to Archanea after the first war for the purpose of improving his archery skills.

In New Mystery of the Emblem, more dimensions are added to Gordin's characterization through his base conversations. Through his conversations with Jeorge, Gordin is depicted to be lacking in self-confidence, causing him to hesitate before releasing each arrow, a fact that cripplingly hampers his marksmanship. These conversations also reveal him to be humble, as he, in spite of eventually beating his master in practice shooting, continues to seek his continued support and guidance. Gordin's lack of self-confidence is also explicated through his interactions with Kris, with whom he expresses an insecurity over his juvenile bearing, longing to establish a dignified, authoritative presence like Jagen.

Gordin is also shown to have a very strong bond with his brother Ryan. Through their interactions with each other, Gordin is observed to play the role of the older brother splendidly, praising and encouraging Ryan wherever necessary, alongside keeping vigil over his actions on both training grounds and the battlefield.

Gordin serves as the player's first bow unit, but is a rather poor introduction to the concept. His bows allow him to chip enemies at range fairly accurately, but this is a trait easily duplicated by javelin-users, who can also fight in melee. Gordin also has very poor stats, with the worst bases of the initial group and rather poor growths. This does not combine well with the fact that many of his available bows have low Might; he can perform tolerably against early axe enemies, but will struggle against Cavaliers and Knights, which boast higher base Defense and practically require the use of a Steel Bow to do more than scratch. Though Gordin only needs two points of Weapon Level to use a Silver Bow, it will also drag his Speed down enough that he will fail to double all but the slowest enemies. His low Skill also causes him to miss more than one would like, despite his weapons having good accuracy.

Another weak point of Gordin is his class of Archer. As an Archer, Gordin has only 5 Move, making him one of the least mobile units in the initial army, and most of the others possess better stats or utility to work with. Gordin is also not exclusive in his status as a bow-user, as Castor shows up only one chapter later with better stats in everything bar Defense, higher growth rates, and 6 Move, Wolf boasts high Speed and 9 Move, and Jeorge offers even better stats, 7 Move, and a Weapon Level that leaves him closest to wielding the game's strongest bow. This makes Gordin's role very competitive. Though Shadow Dragon does provide opportunities for a bow-user to see combat, as enemies possess critical chances and flying units are rather powerful, Gordin is one of the weaker options to fill the role.

Gordin's main saving grace is his promotion. The Orion's Bolt is a fairly early item with little-to-no competition, and it does everything it can to fix his problems: as a Sniper, Gordin's Skill and Speed shoot up massively, his Movement increases to 7, and his Weapon Level, when combined with his high growth in the stat, put him close to being able to wield the Parthia. For this reason, Gordin should be promoted as soon as possible if the player is planning to use him; little is lost, as Gordin's growths are quite poor. Once promoted, Gordin is likely to be the best of the player's bow units, having the best combination of stats, class, and growths. Unfortunately, even in this category, he suffers next to Tomas, who is significantly closer to promotion and has a similar statline.

Overall, Gordin is an unlucky trendsetter in regards to mediocre archers, being held back by his poor statline and suffering from heavy competition. Being sluggish, frail, and inept in his field, he generally only blossoms after heavy investment.

Though Gordin's Book 2 incarnation may look like a repeat of the old days, he is actually something of a standout unit. This is due largely to the change in game design favoring him: Book 2's early chapters are very heavy on Dracoknights, which Gordin is designed to take down, and his stats have received noticeable buffs. Him being four levels closer to promotion makes it far more feasible, and as a Sniper, his promotional gains are as impressive as ever. In the mid game, Wyverns are such a great threat that a bow-user becomes almost mandatory. The emphasis on indoor chapters and rough terrain also makes his low Movement less of a complaint; as a Sniper, he actually becomes one of the more mobile units indoors. Even his growths, traditionally a sticking point, can be compensated for by using Star Shards.

In general, while Gordin appears mediocre at first glance, he comes at a time when the player sorely needs a unit with his skillset, and after his promotion, he should have no problem keeping up with the rest of the army.

Gordin's performance in the DS remake of Shadow Dragon is, unfortunately, mostly a repeat of his NES days. His base class of Archer is the inferior one of the two main unpromoted bow classes, as it leaves him with less Movement, Speed, and Strength in favor of Defense, the stat he needs the least. For this reason, Castor is mostly superior as a bow unit while available, and as before, Jeorge threatens to render him outright obsolete. Gordin also has some of the worst personal bases in the game, with only 2 HP, 4 Luck, and his bow rank, making him little better than a generic unit. For this reason, Gordin essentially must remain an Archer if he is to accomplish anything, as it is the only class he has a workable weapon rank in.

All that said, Gordin's general inferiority does not mean he should not be used, as his niche happens to be a firm one. Shadow Dragon enemies are very strong and hard-hitting, but somewhat poor defensively, meaning that a character capable of chipping them down accurately is in high demand. In the first chapter, Gordin is the sole character able to fill this role adequately, with other characters being forced to make inaccurate javelin tosses; in particular, his ability to chip Gazzak can help wear down a notoriously tricky early boss. Castor joining places a damper on this, but Gordin remains an acceptable option for chip damage, and as ever, if he can escape his doldrums and promote, he will be entirely viable.

Gordin largely repeats his best traits in New Mystery, being a highly competent flier-killer in dangerous early maps and boasting a fairly impressive 9 Strength. His traditionally terrible start is mitigated on a second playthrough, due to his ability to immediately reclass as a Hunter and bump up his Speed and Move. Gordin's growths are somewhat on the low side by New Mystery standards, but they are workable enough by the standards of the game's bow-users. He may suffer somewhat in the endgame, and he is far from overpowered, but all he truly needs is his Strength, his promotion bonuses, and the Parthia to fulfill his role as a chipper and flier-killer, and in New Mystery, his job is in high demand.

Base Set[]

Gordin is among the first units in Heroes as part of the initial launch roster. He is a colorless bow infantry unit who is a particularly straightforward Book I unit in terms of his general role with decent 31 Atk and a solid physical bulk score of 75. His mid-low Spd of 25 is not particularly helpful to him as its not high enough to achieve natural double attacks on a wide range of units, though his personal weapon somewhat alleviates this a bit. His Res of 17 gives him a tremendous weakness to exploit defensively. Gordin may not be the most exciting unit or stand out compared to a large portion of the cast, particularly long after her, but he can be built on a budget and even has a Resplendent form to boot.
Gordin has a Brave Bow as his default weapon, allowing him a double attack whenever he initiates combat at the cost of losing 5 Spd. While this bring him to a low 20, it allows him to guarantee that he can launch some moderate attacks against foes. His persona Renowned Bow is more or less a stronger Brave Bow, with 9 Mt to give him 40 base Atk. When refined, he also inflicts Atk/Def-4 on foes within two spaces of him during combat.
Shove allows Gordin to push an ally one space in the direction he interacts with them using the skill. Attack +3 gives him a flat increase to his Atk stat while Vantage allows Gordin to attack before his foe if they initiate combat on him while he is under 75% HP at the start.

Counters[]

Gordin is far too simple in his kit and default mechanics, thus has simpler counters including Raventomes that naturally carry color advantage over him. His lower Atk often does not allow him to deal significant damage unless he is heavily invested into thus most highly defensive units can likely shrug off his attacks with little issue. His low Res also makes him a prime target against mages, many of whom can also easily double attack him as well due to his low Spd.

Skill Inheritance[]

Fully investing in Gordin's Renowned Bow means that giving him Death Blow is a natural fit as he will gain +6 Atk at third tier or +8 if he can get the fourth tier when initiating combat. Sturdy Impact can also work due to the Atk+6 boost as well as the Def+10 boost and the ability to negate his foe's follow-up attack. Reposition works well as a support skill due to the superior means of ally positioning as can Draw Back to keep an ally in front of them as he pulls them out of danger. Luna allows him to ignore 50% of his foe's Def when it activates further improving his effective damage and charges quickly thanks to his Brave Bow attacks. Lull Attack Defense further decreases his foes Atk/Def during combat while Special Spiral allows him to charge his specials even quicker. If on a budget, Chill Defense can provide him a means to weaken his foe's Def before combat, though targeting the right unit may be a bit tricky. Skill C is flexible including supportive skills like Hone Attack to boost allies, Odd/Even Attack Wave to give him and his allies even more Atk boosts during specific numbered turns, or Threaten Defense/Defense Smoke to debuff his foe's defenses so he can hit harder.

Etymology[]

Gordin is an uncommon spelling of the name Gordon,[2] which was derived from a place name meaning “great hill” or “round hill” from an Old English word. The name is usually associated with Scotland and was commonly used as a surname. Its use as a given name originally began in honor of the British general Charles George Gordon, who died defending the city of Khartoum in Sudan.

Trivia[]

  • Gordin and Abel are the only original members of the Altean Knights who leave the country of their own accord at the end of Mystery of the Emblem and its remake. The rest of the other knights (barring Luke who resigns, and Draug who is asked to become the leader of Grust's army by Marth) continue to reside in their homeland and serve in the military. Coincidentally, all the men mentioned have green hair.
  • Gordin's bond support with Ryan is one of the few support bonuses in Mystery of the Emblem that is familial in nature, the others being Maria's one-way support with Minerva, Yuliya and Jubelo's mutual support, and Tiki's support with Bantu.
  • In his TCG artwork, Gordin appears to be wielding a Steel Bow as both an Archer and a Sniper.
  • Gordin has a unique weapon, Gordin's Bow, eponymously named after himself in New Mystery of the Emblem, as does his brother Ryan. Both of these bows can be potentially obtained from the Everyone's Conditions function on the battle preparations menu. Gordin's Bow has better might than Ryan's, but less hit and Durability, although both share the same critical rate of 10.
  • In New Mystery of the Emblem, if Kris is female, Gordin can be one of her five potential love interests, along with Wolf, Jeorge, Warren, and Horace.
