—Gullveig
Gullveig is the main antagonist of Book VII from Fire Emblem Heroes. She is a vanir goddess who seeks to destroy all of time.
Profile[]
Gullveig, the Golden Seer, is a being with control over time. In the future, she brings Askr and Midgard to ruin. When the Order of Heroes confront her, she undoes its members each in turn, returning them all to a moment in time before their birth. The goddess of light, Seiðr, imparts these events to Kiran as a vision to warn them of Gullveig's threat so that this ending can be averted.

Gullveig's true nature is eventually revealed to be cyclical and self-fulfilling. She starts as Kvasir in the past, becomes Seiðr in the present, and will eventually become Gullveig in the future. Once Gullveig achieves her goal of destroying Midgard, she creates her own daughter, Heiðr, as an embodiment of her power and sends her back in time to befriend her past self, Seiðr, and then rewinds herself back to becoming Kvasir and begins the self-fulfilling prophecy of her life over anew.
Eventually, it is revealed that Njörðr had plotted all along to turn Seiðr into Gullveig. He pretended to help Heiðr, only to allow the Golden Curse to overtake her, and then urged Seiðr to kill her as an act of mercy. With this act, he ensured that the Golden Curse is transferred from Heiðr to Seiðr. He subsequently attempts to use Gullveig as a tool to destroy his enemies, but with an emotionally crushed Seiðr looking on, she kills the king instead.
After the Golden Serpents are purged from Seiðr, removing her from the cycle, Gullveig and Kvasir arrive in the present in order to ensure that the cycle continues. After Kvasir is killed, Gullveig stands as the final bearer of the curse. She tells Seiðr that there are only two outcomes. Either Gullveig kills Seiðr, and the cycle continues, or Seiðr kills her, and saves the world.
Separately, Gullveig approaches Kiran and reflects on her connection to them. As Kvasir, Kiran was the first person she had ever felt a connection with. As Seiðr, Kiran was the one granted her vision of the ruined future, and with whom she wished to create a child. With these past events of her other selves in mind, Gullveig implores to Kiran that they must kill her.
In the end, Seiðr stops Gullveig, ending her life and the cycle that binds them. In her final moments, she tells Seiðr to live on and spend time with Kiran as she knows that is one of her true desires as her future self. Though Gullveig expects to pass on, Seiðr uses her powers to resurrect the spirits of both Gullveig and Kvasir, with their spirits now living within a spiritual realm inside Seiðr. The three begin conversing with each other, happy to share memories of their experiences together as one being.
Personality[]
Cold, emotionless, and with a powerful control over the flow of time, Gullveig is ruthless in her pursuit of perpetuating the cycle of the Golden Serpents.

In reality, Gullveig has a jaded outlook on life full of despair molded by the tragedies forced upon her. While she remembers her warmer memories as both Kvasir and Seiðr, much of her optimism she once held as the latter is long gone. She has resigned herself to fulfill her role as the Golden Curse dictates but ultimately wishes to be free of the serpents that bind her. Her fatalistic worldview remained even as she dies, telling Seiðr that she does not wished to be pitied for her death.
Gullveig remembers her life as Seiðr, and the motivations behind some of her actions extend from her knowledge of her past self. In particular, she remembers the pain of being victimized by Njörðr, and Seiðr's own unspoken desire to kill the king for all he had done to her. She also feels a connection to Kiran born from the prior encounters shared with them as both of her past selves.
Like her two counterparts, Gullveig holds a strong affection for Kiran. She believes that they are the key to ending her suffering. In the moments before the final battle against her, the spirit of Gullveig speaks to Kiran directly and implores them to stop her, knowing that they hold the power to do so. In her supposed final conversation with Seiðr, she reminds her present self to spend time with them and fulfill her wish to live out her life with the person she loves. Gullveig's final words before her mortal death are a simple farewell to Kiran. Her summoned version even states plainly in her Level 40 conversation that she loves Kiran.
Amusingly, her Brave variation expresses annoyance at her continued lack of directional sense that she previously held as Seiðr.

Base Set[]
Brace Gullveig is a powerful flying Blue Tome mage, packing a very high base 45 Atk and 47 Spd, alongside rather poor Def and Res, making her a glass cannon. Her unique weapon, The Cycle's Turn, augments her offensive power even further. It comes with the slaying effect, reducing the cooldown of her native Luna down to 2 instead of 3, along with giving her Canto for 1 space, allowing Brave Gullveig to attack and retreat to a safe area. Furthermore, it gives her +5 to all stats if she initiates or a [Bonus] effect is on her, as well as giving her an additional bonus to Atk and Spd of the number of turns that has passed x 2, up to a maximum bonus of +10, and she can deal additional flat damage equal to 20% of her in-combat Spd. Do note that this damage includes dealing damage with AOE Specials as well. And finally, her weapon also gives her Null Follow-Up, preventing effects that prevents her follow-ups and guarantees her foe's follow up. Brave Gullveig's skills complement her hyper-offensive statline. Her A skill, Flared Sparrow, deals 7 flat damage to the enemy before she attacks, alongside giving her +7 to Atk and Spd, and after combat, it activates an unique effect: Divine Vein (Flame). This creates flames on 5 tiles in a line centered on foe's space from left to right based on the direction unit is facing for 1 turn. The tiles affected becomes difficult terrain for Infantry and Cavalry Bows, Tomes, and Daggers, along with dealing another 7 flat damage if the enemy phase begins, and yet another 7 damage if combat is initiated in the affected tile, which is added with the initial 7 damage for a total of 14 damage before Brave Gullveig even attacks. This augments her power even further, bolstering her offenses, and prevents enemy ranged units from reaching her. Being one of the two female winners of Choose Your Legends, Brave Gullveig receives a unique B skill, Gold Unwinding. It inflicts -5 Spd and Res on foes during combat, and reduces her damage taken by 60%, if her health is above 50%. Third, if Brave Gullveig initiates, she gets another turn, but only able to move 1 space during that extra turn. This extra turn effect can be triggered once every 2 turns. Her C skill is Atk/Spd Oath 4, which gives her +6 to Atk and Spd for 1 turn, if she's within 2 spaces of an ally, and gives her the ability to move to an adjacent space next to that ally. This gives her the Bonus requirement of her weapon effect, as well as increasing her mobility, allowing her to reach enemies easier.
Counters[]
As powerful and dangerous as Brave Gullveig is during player-phase, she pays for it with a rather poor enemy phase. Her bulk is very poor without her 60% damage reduction from her B skill, and that can be pierced through with the likes of Deadeye and Lethality, or units with Special Spiral 4.
Skill Inheritance[]
Like most new units, Brave Gullveig's kit synergizes very well out of the box, and not much change is needed.

Etymology[]
Gullveig was a sorceress originating from Vanaheimr with a great desire for gold and sometimes considered the personification of gold. When she visited the Æsir, the gods threw her in a fire fearing that her love of gold would corrupt the world but was resurrected three times. This action eventually led to the first war between the Æsir and the Vanir. The name Gullveig also means 'gold strength' or 'gold power.'
Trivia[]
- Gullveig, similarly to other characters from Vanaheimr, seems to draw inspiration from Japanese legends; in her case, the Yamata-no-Orochi, an eight-headed snake-shaped dragon, slain by Susanoo.
- She is also derived, as indicated by Book VII, Chapter 4, from the Ouroboros, a symbol of a snake or dragon eating its own tail, which embodies her existence's cyclical nature.
- Gullveig is the first main antagonist of a Book to be a colorless unit.
- In Round 7 of the Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends popularity poll, Gullveig came in 1st among the female characters with a total of 16,941 votes.
- This makes Gullveig the second Heroes character to receive a Brave unit variation with the first being Veronica. She is also the first Heroes character to place first in their voting division.
- Gullveig also holds the record for the shortest span of time between a character's game debut and subsequent victory in Choose Your Legends, having only been introduced in Heroes in December 2022 with the launch of Book VII, roughly a month before the following Choose Your Legends voting period.
- Gullveig shares her English voice actor, Alice Himora, and Japanese voice actor, Suzuko Mimori, with Heiðr.

- As she and Seiðr are different incarnations of the same person, Gullveig is the first final boss of a Heroes Book to also be that Book's protagonist.
- Gullveig, alongside Seiðr and Kvasir, are similar to the legends of feminine trios, such as the Matres and Matronae, the Greek Moirai, the Roman Parcae, the Norse Norns, or even Shakespeare's Weird Sisters. Many of these trios were often characterized as being fortune-tellers and having power over the fates of other individuals (or their past, present, and future, in other terms).
- Many of them are related to each other, mimicking Gullveig's relation to Seiðr and Kvasir, as they are all different iterations of the same person, like how identical triplets are three people who share the same face.
