“Finally! It took you long enough! Very rude to keep a princess waiting. Very rude, indeed! That would be me—the second princess of Elusia, Hortensia! Now then. Hello, everybody!”
—Hortensia, Chapter 7

Hortensia is a character from Fire Emblem Engage. She is the second princess of Elusia and the younger half-sister of Ivy.

Profile[]

Hortensia is the second Princess of Elusia, the daughter of its King, Hyacinth, and the younger half-sister of the Crown Princess Ivy. Hortensia's mother was a concubine of the King and was viewed with disdain as a result. According to Ivy, her mother's smile, charm, and perseverance eventually won over even the Queen, all of which were passed down to her daughter. Hortensia's mother passed away when she was seven. Hortensia would join the Mage Academy in Elusia becoming a prodigious student, even skipping a few grades due to her natural talent. During her time there, she met Goldmary and Rosado, and the three became quick friends.

Hyacinth allied with the Fell Dragon Sombron, leading to an alliance with Gradlon. The two nations would launch a campaign against the other nations of Elyos to steal the Emblem Rings and revive the Fell Dragon. To assist in the plan, Hyacinth summoned Hortensia to Elusia castle with Rosado and Goldmary tagging along as her friends. For his mission, Hyacinth gave his two daughters Emblem Rings, with Hortensia being given the Ring of the Princess Exalt.

Shortly after Alear and their forces arrived in Brodia, Hortensia leads a small army against Alear at The Grand Crossing, threatening to steal the Emblem Rings they had thus far. Despite putting up a fierce fight, aided by the Corrupted Ring of the Princess Exalt, Hortensia is ultimately repelled and forced to retreat. Later, King Hyacinth manages to capture the King of Brodia, Morion, to sacrifice him to Sombron. At Destinea Cathedral, Hyacinth orders Hortensia to stall the Divine Dragon's forces while he completes the ritual to revive Sombron. Hortensia manages to hold Alear back long enough for her father to complete the ritual before retreating from her injuries.

The ritual to revive Sombron ultimately succeeds, however the Fell Dragon devours Hyacinth to further bolster his strength. Ivy disappears after Sombron revives himself and had stolen the Ring of the Lady of the Plains and Princess Exalt. Hortensia, lead to believe that Hyacinth could be revived if she reclaimed the last remaining Emblem Rings, sieges the Solm Palace, taking Queen Seforia hostage. Ivy, having defected to the Divine Dragon's forces, attempts to convince her sister to end her siege. However, Zephia places Hortensia under a mind-control spell and gives her the Corrupted Ring of the Instructor in a bid to kill the Divine Dragon and their forces. Hortensia is ultimately subdued and the brainwashing is removed. Convinced by Ivy to fight for the Divine Dragon to purge Elyos of the Fell Dragon's influence, Hortensia joins Alear's forces.

Fell Xenologue[]

In an alternate reality of Elyos, Hortensia grew up under a hostile relationship from her older sister Ivy, who openly despised Hortensia, as she was forced to call Ivy "her Majesty" or "my Queen" in fear of being executed, which made her and her retainers want to avoid drawing attention to themselves in order to survive. Nonetheless, she supported Alear in the war against Sombron, resulting in the deaths of her retainers as she escaped.

After becoming Queen and later a follower of Sombron, Ivy personally executed all of their other half-siblings and their father Hyacinth as sacrifices, and had warned Hortensia that one day she would execute her as well. Hortensia then escapes to Solm intending to collect the Seven Bracelets in order to resurrect their father.

It is later revealed that nearly all of Elyos' population consists of Corrupted, including Hortensia, having already died in Elusia.

After Nel attempts to rescue Alear at a Solmic temple, Nil summons a horde of Corrupted led by Hortensia and Fogado, both of which are now fully aware of their corruption, and are ordered to kill Alear's army, only to be defeated and killed.

Hortensia was later resurrected in the final battle after Nil gathers the Seven Bracelets, and unlike the other seven royals, Hortensia does not hold a bracelet. She later dies with relief.

Personality[]

Hortensia is a playful girl who likes to tease her foes in battle. She has childish tendencies and is a little vain about her cute appearance, but ultimately is a sweet girl deep down. She often compares herself to others in her pursuit of being considered charming and cute and can be competitive in this regard, even if it is one-sided, such as with Céline. She dislikes being seen in an unflattering way, such as telling Rosado to discard a picture he had drawn of her staring off into distance and demanded that he redraw her in a cute pose instead.

Hortensia's insecurities and desire to be seen as cute comes from the early court life as the child of one of Hyacinth's mistresses. Despite the ire her mother dealt with as a concubine, she handled them with poise and charm that won the hearts of Elusia. This became Hortensia's primary motivation to be seen as charming. Despite losing her at a young age, she dearly loves her mother and looks up to her.

Hortensia dearly loves both her father Hyacinth and older half-sister Ivy, and faithfully obeys their commands without question. She admires Ivy above all as she worked hard and was even quite prodigious in mage academy to stand alongside her. She values praise from Ivy and is eager to hear about her mother through her older sisters eyes. Ivy comments that Hortensia takes heavily after her mother as she displayed similar resilience within Elusia's hostile royal court environment. The two vow at the end of their support chain to always be there for each other.

Fell Xenologue Hortensia[]

Hortensia's alternate counterpart is depressed, has low self-esteem, and is self-deprecating, stating that she is not cute and is completely worthless, so much so that she struggles to even speak properly. She is utterly terrified of her older sister due to Ivy's open hostility towards her, such as saying that she is one of "the most miserable wretches alive", and is afraid of encountering her as she risks being executed like her other half-siblings. Despite Ivy's mistreatment, Hortensia still tries to get her sisters attention, hoping that she would be happy to see her, which can be implied if Hortensia goes against alternate Ivy, who assumes Hortensia came to collude with Solm to get her attention. Nonetheless, she is determined to resurrect her father, so that she leaves Elusia for Solm in search of the Emblem Bracelets.

Upon being resurrected again, Hortensia has completely given up on life and the possibility of change, and simply fights because she's told to. As she dies, she hopes Ivy will finally be happy to see her again.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Hortensia is a flying magic unit recruited towards the second half of the game and is one of the strongest healers in the game. While Framme and Jean are available for much longer, Hortensia carries a much more rounded skill set, namely a personal skill, that improves her raw healing value. Hortensia is mainly focused growth-wise in Speed, Resistance, and Luck, as all three have a 50% chance to raise in value with each level. Her HP and Dexterity are at a workable 40% and 35% growth respectively to round out her ability to dodge attacks and soak an occasional magic hit. In return, her offenses are low and her Build is nonexistent without factoring in class growths. 20% Strength may not be a large issue as her base class does not use physical weapons, but the 20% Magic growth can reduce her raw healing values. In addition, her default class is a Flying Unit, meaning that she is even more vulnerable to Bow-wielders due to her low Defense growths.

What Hortensia lacks in raw healing, she makes up for with utility and cost-effective use of staves. Her Personal Skill, Big Personality, allows her to extend the range of any Staff by 1. This means even a Heal staff is a two-range heal, keeping her slightly further away from danger and allowing more units to stand between her and the enemy. It keeps her present throughout battles even from wayward allies and gives rise to larger benefits from staffs like Physic, Fortify, Silence, and Fracture, and even gives her 6 tiles when casting Warp, Rescue, and Rewarp instead of 5, giving her great utility in positioning the army. Her personal class is the Pegasus version of Wing Tamer, allowing her to use both Tomes and Staves. Because of her Flying Battle Style, she has massive movement flexibility, further enhancing her near constant presence on a map. When promoted to Sleipnir Rider, the only downside is her low Tome Rank cap at B-Rank, keeping her to the Eltome ranks and limiting her offensive options. However, this can be overlooked in lieu of the true purpose of her class. Her unique class skill, World Tree, has a chance to not consume a use of her staff triggered based off Dexterity growth. Not only does this help retain value of staffs bought/obtained, this can even allow spamming of some of the more powerful staves in the game including Nodus. As such, Hortensia is best suited to capitalize on the sheer strength of Staves.

Hortensia's best Emblem Ring overall is the Ring of the Dawn Maiden due to the sheer value of improving her healing and staff mastery. Silence Ward prevents enemies from silencing her and removing her healing, Healing Light and Staff Mastery increases her raw healing values and thus covers for her low magic growths. If needed, Hortensia can use Great Sacrifice to fully heal the entire army at the cost of reducing her HP to 1, which ideally should not be a threat as Hortensia can utilize this anywhere on the map and well out of enemy range. When Engaged to the ring, Augment's range boosts stacks on top of her class skill as well, further increasing her presence on the battlefield as a Staff user. This ring, in combination with her exclusive class, makes Hortensia one of the most dynamic and even oppressive Staff users in the game as her sheer cost effectiveness on some of the most potent Staves with this ring allows her to set up foes through Fracture, Entrap, Freeze, and Silence or assist allies through the various healing spells or can make longer usage of great supportive skills like Rescue and most notably can use Warp to move large group of allies into enemy territory and swarm from within.

Her superior mobility benefits the Ring of the Instructor when using the Instruct or Goddess Dance commands for wider and easier access to place her in favorable positions when using the ring. In addition, her high Luck growths and caps gives her a high chance at activating Divine Pulse. The Ring of the Caring Princess also works tremendously with changing her into an offensive role by increasing her tome damage. The Ring of the Crux of Fate mainly provides Quality Time as even more means of healing units around her. Lastly, the Ring of the Holy Knight can give her Canter, which can give her 2 (or 3 if at its "+" rank) movement after a non-Wait action, allowing her to disengage out of danger if she is ever in it.

Overall, Hortensia is easily the strongest Staff user in the game simply due to her cost effective usage of them through World Tree alone. However, it is also her emphasis on a massive range increase to her skills in conjunction with the Ring of the Dawn Maiden that makes it clear that Hortensia is built to exploit Staves in all aspects. While she may not have the strongest Magic for raw healing values, she can easily make up for this with certain acquirable skills. Hortensia is a godsend especially in higher difficulties where shopping and Forging become more important and alleviating the need to restock Staves, the only equipment that has durability, further gives her value when trying to spend gold a thinly as possible when it can be avoided.

Base Kit[]

Hortensia is a Staff Flier who has a solid role as a supportive healer, and most notably, a skill funnel due to being the first Rearmed Staff Hero. Even outside of this status, she is a solid mixed offense unit on top of her healing role as she sits on a solid 48 Atk and 51 Spd. Her 34 Res gives her a bit of magical resistance if needed for a 70 magical bulk, however her physical bulk sits on a mere 16 Def for 52 physical. Hortensia is built to immediately field and succeed in battle while providing powerful supportive tools for allies much like her role in Engage.
Arcane Charmer accelerates her Special trigger, requiring one less attack to activate. After combat, Hortensia heals 7 HP to allies within three spaces of her. During combat, if she has 25% or more at the start of combat, she gains +5 to her four core stats, makes a guaranteed follow-up, and grants a faster Special charge for herself per attack. As an Arcane Weapon, she can refine it to give her either the Wrathful or Dazzling effect to it plus a specific stat boost to one of her four core stats. Since she carries a Wrathful Staff skill in her Skill B, the Dazzling Refine is her best option and taking Spd is her strongest stat to increase.
Her personal skill, Glittering Anima, activates if she has at least 25% at the start of her turn. If she does, she gives herself and her allies within three spaces +6 Atk/Spd,【Canto (1)】, and neutralizing any penalties on these units during battle. At the start of the player turn, under the same health activation threshold, she also inflicts -6 Spd/Res,【Panic】, and【Discord】on foes within three spaces of her. Finally, if Hortensia is within three spaces of an ally, she grants +5 Atk/Spd to nearby allies and neutralizes effects that slow Special charging when in combat.
Hortensia has a complete kit with Rescue for her Support skill, granting 50% of her Atk as healing to a target ally and has a Draw Back effect. Glitter of Light boosts her damage by 45% of her foe's Res. After combat, she prevents her target and enemies within two spaces of that target from countering. Attack Speed Catch grants her +7 Atk/Spd if her foe is at 100% HP or has an active【Penalty】on them. If she has both conditions inflicted, she gains an additional +2 Atk/Spd. Poetic Justice gives her a Wrathful Staff effect, inflicts -4 Spd on her foe, and deals a bonus 15% of her foes Atk as additional damage.

Counters[]

Hortensia's abysmal physical bulk lets her be felled by any physical unit and is killed easily by Bow users due to her innate weakness to them as a Flier. She is also vulnerable to【Isolation】from both Bridal Fjorm and Mila.

Skill Inheritance[]

Hortensia has a complete kit without any need for replacement. She is fittingly a great recipient of Ivy's Attuned Skill Soaring Echo to let ally Infantry and Fliers within two spaces of her to move to a tile within two tiles of her. Ivy can also give her Deadly Miasma. It not a great replacement of Glittering Anima, but if she is used to spread skills, it is one way to increase the premium skill passed to other units. Naturally, this makes the return on investment when spreading skills to fellow Staff Fliers, especially those that innately carry Wrathful Staff as their Skill B and/or has a staff that has/can have the Dazzling Staff refine. Hence, she is great for Brave Camilla and Summer L'Arachel to gain these powerful skills. Otherwise, any powerful Skill C, preferably fourth tier, can replace it and give her a wider array of skills to other applicable non-Flier Staff units like Genny, Mist, and Brave Veronica
