“In a battle you should focus on what's important. As mercenaries, we're regularly putting our lives on the line. Getting distracted with unnecessary things will land you in an early grave.”
—Jeralt talking to Byleth

Jeralt is a character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. He is a legendary mercenary known as the Blade Breaker and the father of the main protagonist of Three Houses, Byleth. He possesses a Major Crest of Seiros.

Profile[]

Jeralt is a legendary knight, considered to be the strongest in history, and is also a former soldier of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. Several years ago, Jeralt was hired to escort Rhea. He took a fatal blow intended for her but Rhea healed Jeralt using her blood, giving him the Crest of Seiros. He was then hired by Rhea and brought into the Knights of Seiros. He quickly rose in ranks and became captain, eventually earning the title of Blade Breaker. During this time, he would start a family of his own with a woman named Sitri, having a child named Byleth, though his wife passed away shortly after their birth.

Jeralt began developing mistrust towards Rhea after the sudden death of his wife on the 20th of the Horsebow Moon 1159 from childbirth as well as Byleth's strange behavior as a newborn. Byleth did not laugh or cry as a newborn, leading to Jeralt consulting a doctor to find a reason. The doctor noted that while Byleth seemed healthy and had a pulse, they mysteriously had no heartbeat. All of these unusual circumstances lead to Jeralt breaking away from the Church of Seiros by starting a fire in the Monastery in which he claimed that the blaze took the life of his child.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Jeralt left the Knights of Seiros in order to start his own mercenary company where his reputation further spread across Fódlan. While many joined his band of mercenaries, one of his strongest members was Byleth. While Byleth was trained in combat, Jeralt provided very little information about Fódlan or the Church of Seiros.

During his mercenary work, a mission brought him to Sauin Village where he would meet a young Leonie. He would teach her combat, strategy, and tactics and gifted her a small wooden charm before leaving. This would inspire the young girl to become a mercenary herself in Jeralt's footsteps.

Three Houses[]

One night, after conversing with Byleth about a mysterious recurring dream, a band of bandits lead by Kostas attacks a nearby village and threatens the lives of three students from the Officers Academy; Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude. Jeralt and Byleth drive off Kostas and, after a reunion with Alois, they deliver the students safely back to the Monastery. Upon their arrival, Rhea offers the two jobs at the Monastery, with Jeralt regaining his old post as captain in the Knights of Seiros. Though reluctant, he agrees in order to keep a close eye on Byleth, and warns them to be wary of the Archbishop.

Academy Phase[]

Jeralt would spend several months doing missions in the Church of Seiros' name, but would occasionally help Byleth during their initial months as a teacher. He begins to notice that Byleth's time with the students have slowly begun to change them, being able to express their emotions visibly for the first time.

The peace in Fódlan begins to unravel quickly due to the sudden appearance of the Flame Emperor, determined to conquer the continent. Additionally, a sinister group known as Those Who Slither in the Dark appear to be further spreading discord across the continent.

Flayn, Seteth's sister, is kidnapped by the Death Knight, but is eventually rescued by Byleth and their students. They also find Monica, a Black Eagles student who went missing a year prior. Feeling that something big is about to happen, Jeralt takes Byleth to their mother's grave and tells them that should something happen to him, they should search his office for something important he has hidden for them.

Near the end of the Ethereal Moon, several Academy students go missing when exploring a nearby abandoned chapel. Byleth and their class investigates the ruins only to find several students attacked by monsters. They are able to defeat the monsters, but it is revealed that the beasts were actually transformed students. Among the students rescued was Monica who thanks Jeralt. However, with his back turned, Monica takes out a dagger and plunges it into his back. Byleth desperately uses Divine Pulse in order to prevent his death, but Thales appears in the rewound time and deflects Byleth's attempt to stop Monica. Unable to stop his assassination, Jeralt apologizes to Byleth for being careless. As he expires, he notices Byleth tearing up and is touched that their first tears were for him.

Byleth would honor their father's request posthumously. They would uncover his diary, recounting his growing distrust in the Church and Rhea as well as Byleth's infancy. He also left behind his wife's ring, which he wanted Byleth to give to their lover when the time came for them to find their own happiness. He is laid to rest in the Garreg Mach Monastery Cemetery, next to his wife.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Three Hopes[]

Jeralt remains as the leader of the Jeralt's Mercenaries rather than re-joining the Knights of Seiros. He and his mercenaries are known all across Fódlan and generally work for the faction opposing Shez's.

Jeralt is a playable character, although in order to unlock him, the player must complete Chapter 10 of their respective route without routing Byleth. Doing so will cause Jeralt to arrive after the mission is over, upon which he, Byleth and Alois join the player's army.

If Shez decides to avoid Byleth, after their employer is killed and the enemy forces routed in Chapter 10 of any route, Byleth surrenders as they failed their mission. Jeralt then returns, expressing surprise at how he had left to handle a backup squad and returned to find the battle already over. Edelgard/Dimitri/Claude then suggests hiring him and his group for their side, which he agrees to since his group had been losing battles to them and thus his reputation dropping immensely.

If Shez decides to confront Byleth and defeats them, Jeralt arrives after handling the backup squad and fights Shez, only to be slain in the ensuing fight, causing Byleth to swear revenge on Shez and allowing Sothis to possess them.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Personality[]

Jeralt is a man of honor, known in his days as a Knight of Seiros for his exceptional skill and courage in battle. He is highly respected and even idolized by many current and upcoming knights, but is modest about his title and renown. He is a capable instructor, having trained his child in the art of combat, becoming a fearsome warrior themselves. He also gave minor training to Leonie, whom he acknowledges as an apprentice of him of sorts and would later succeed him with the title of Blade Breaker.

He dearly loves his family, having spent his later years training his child and is one of the few people who are able to read Byleth's mood despite their limited externalization of emotions. His deceased wife Sitri is always on his mind, and in the instances he is at Garreg Mach Monastery, he will usually pay her grave a visit. After her passing, he took her wedding ring and would eventually pass it on to Byleth, telling them to give her ring to someone special when the time came.

Jeralt is also known to be a drinker, with many conversations about him mentioning his love of bars and Alois even revealing to Leonie that he has accrued a huge amount of debt due to unpaid tavern tabs across the land, causing the former to be unable to step foot in any tavern without being badgered for payment.

Despite being a former (and later re-recruited in Three Houses) Knight of Seiros, he is not a follower of the Church of Seiros. Jeralt has a complicated relationship with Rhea, as in the past he valiantly protected her from an attack and suffered a grievous wound, only for her to give him a blood transfusion with her own blood, saving his life as thanks. The mysterious circumstances of his wife's death and Byleth's condition sowed seeds of distrust within Jeralt, resulting in his departure from the Knights of Seiros. Nonetheless, he was willing to return to the Knights, albeit begrudgingly, after acting as a mercenary for nearly twenty years. While he holds no pure ill will towards Rhea, he openly cautions Byleth to be careful around her and to not fully trust her.

Recruitment[]

While both Byleth and Jeralt can be recruited in all routes of the game, they cannot be recruited via Persuasion Strategies, but by accomplishing certain tasks that require some amount of planning. In all instances, the final step is to defeat their employer (Rodrigue in Scarlet Blaze, Randolph in Azure Gleam, and Fleche in Golden Wildfire) before Byleth can rendezvous with them. During this point, Byleth will almost instantly take allied forts that are impeding their march. However, defeating Byleth mid transit is almost always a recruitment fail clause. Once this happens, Jeralt will ride to fight to his death, locking players out of the best version of their respective routes.

  • In Golden Wildfire, both Byleth and Jeralt can be recruited during Chapter 10's sole mission, "Assault on the Federation King", by ensuring Byleth does not reach Claude when he is doing his decoy mission objective (meaning dispatch the two enemy Swordmasters, Warriors, and Myson that appear to slow him down), otherwise Byleth and Jeralt will not join you. Once Claude reaches safety and block access with a boulder, Fleche will open the doors to her fort, allowing access to Fleche; Byleth will then try to rendezvous with Fleche.
    • This route is the only route where Byleth can be defeated while in rendezvous and doing so will not cost you the Eisners.
  • In Scarlet Blaze, both Byleth and Jeralt can be recruited during Chapter 10's main mission, "Subjugation of the Western Kingdom" by following these instructions:
    • Obtain the 30 Resource point-worth Resonant Lightning Strategy from the tent survey spot in western Duval territory and equip it during the Strategy portion of the fight.
    • Pressure Baron Mateus into surrendering by taking all the highlighted forts around him.
    • Rescue all three Sorcery Engineers from a Swordmaster ambush so the Resonant Lightning Strategy can be implemented.
    • Defeat Rodrigue before Byleth can rendezvous with the former Duke Fraldarius.
  • In Azure Gleam, both Byleth and Jeralt can be recruited during Chapter 12's main mission, "The Conquest of Hevring", by following these instructions:
    • Obtain the 30 Resource point-worth Locate Ambushers from the tent survey spot in Menja territory and equip it during the Strategy portion of the fight. This is more for first timers.
    • Use the strategy to make the strongholds containing ambushers will glow neon red. These strongholds are: Wooded Plateau, Decaying Ramparts, Crooked Highroad, Forest Byway and Forest Highroad. At the same time, a green arrow will trace a path to the X that avoids all of these strongholds. Do not take any of the strongholds containing ambushers or you will fail in recruiting the Eisners.
    • Defeat Fleche once you arrive at the X and the ambushers, who reveal themselves once Fleche appears. Do not let any of the ambushers reach the Allied Base or you will fail in recruiting the Eisners.
    • Defeat Randolph before Byleth can rendezvous with their soon to be former employer.

Etymology[]

Jeralt is a derivative of the Germanic name Gerald. "Ger" means "spear" and "ald" means "rule".

Trivia[]

  • Jeralt shares his Japanese voice actor, Akio Ōtsuka, with Fates' King Garon.
    • His English voice actor, David Lodge, is also the narrator of both Three Houses and Three Hopes.
  • Jeralt shares similarities with Greil of Path of Radiance.
    • They are the fathers of the main protagonists of their respective games, Byleth and Ike.
    • They were previous high-ranking members of an order of knights. Jeralt being Captain of the Knights of Seiros and Greil being one of Daein's Four Riders.
    • They eventually left their knighthoods under dark circumstances and started their own mercenary companies.
    • Both of them are murdered in front of their children's eyes and die cradled in their arms.
  • Jeralt having a middle name may indicate he is a descendant of nobility, presumably from a minor Faerghus or Leicester noble house that didn't withstand the test of time.
  • Oddly, Jeralt has unused growth rates, his affection can be raised, has academy stats, and has victory quotes, differently from other NPCs, probably hinting that he would have been playable, but the idea was scrapped.
  • In Chapter 10, Anna reveals that she knew Jeralt for a long time.
  • In a survey conducted by Famitsu Magazine, Jeralt placed 16th for males and 31st overall with 180 votes in the character popularity poll for Three Houses.
