Etymology

In Japanese mythology, foxes are said to be intelligent beings with mythical powers growing more potent with age. Typically they are called kitsune, though youko is an uncommon synonym. There are two types of kitsune. The first are zenko that serve Inari, the Shinto god of rice, sake, tea, and fertility who takes the form of a fox and are benevolent creatures. The second are yako which are mischievous pranksters that can at times be malevolent. Kitsune have many powers, such as being able to change form. When a kitsune becomes older they grow additional tails to signify their growth in power and when they reach a hundred they grow a ninth tail and become near-omniscient with power equivalent to a minor god.
