“This war ends now... And the way to peace begins with the Nohrian king's death.”
—Kumagera attempting an assassination on King Garon in Chapter 14.

Kumagera (クマゲラ) is a capturable boss character in Fire Emblem Fates in the Nohr route.

Profile

A General of Hoshido, Kumagera seeks King Garon of Nohr’s life so as to end the war. Despite this, Kumagera seems to be merciful, giving the Avatar two chances to withdraw their troops, and be spared.

After the mysterious songstress performs her dance, Garon is in extreme pain. Believing that the songstress was responsible for indirectly hurting Garon with a curse, Iago attempts to capture her. However, the songstress has already left, and quickly the Hoshidan troops move in, led by Kumagera, who wants to kill Garon to end the war. Kumagera is immediately accused by Leo for hurting Garon via the songstress, however Kumagera tells him that he doesn't know the songstress at all. After giving the Avatar two chances to surrender, he prepares for battle. However, he is ultimately killed or captured depending on the player's decision.

Conquest Chapter 14: Voice of Paradise

Overview

As a boss, Kumagera has a few tricks up his sleeve that may catch players unaware, despite his relatively mundane stats. On Hard mode and higher, he gains access to Countermagic and Darting Blow. Attempting to exploit his seemingly poor resistance can prove lethal as a result, and he is fairly adept at doubling things during enemy phase. His Critical rate is fairly decent, as well. Finally, on hard mode and higher, a Shrine Maiden with Entrap is positioned right by him. If a stray unit gets pulled in, he or she will be locked in a virtual duel to the death with the boss. Killing Kumagera prematurely would be unfortunate, as he may be captured and recruited. Doing so will require the player to defeat him with Niles, which could be daunting if Niles has been poorly trained.

As a playable unit, Kumagera is quite useful, assuming he was captured on hard mode or higher. He has excellent HP and Defense, and his speed is good enough to avoid being doubled by most enemy classes. His Countermagic will protect his low resistance and dish back punishment against units trying to attack him with a magic weapon. Darting Blow will also allow him to double units that are at or below his speed value when he initiates an attack against the enemy. In addition, he also comes with Certain Blow to help increase his accuracy which is extremely pitiful with almost every Oni Chieftain. Since Kumagera starts off as a level 1 Oni Chieftain, he can learn his class' skills; Death Blow and Counter. Players can stack Death Blow with a high critical hit weapon so that Kumagera can land critical hits quite often on the enemy. Counter will add more to his defenses, especially on Hard or Lunatic mode as he basically becomes a powerful reflector where only thrown weapons and bow users can damage him without taking reflected damage.

As an Oni Chieftain, Kumagera's base class is the Oni Savage. His reclassing option is the Blacksmith class. From the Blacksmith class, Kumagera can learn Salvage Blow and Lancebreaker. Salvage Blow is almost useless due to his abysmal luck but Lancebreaker will help him deal with lance users better, especially if he is using inversed weapons such as the Dual Club.

Quotes

“We're not leaving until King Garon has met his maker. Stay out of our way!”
—Kumagera's pre-battle quote.
“Damn you... King Garon...”
—Kumagera's death quote

Etymology

Kumagera is the Japanese name for the Black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius).

This bird-based naming convention is shared with Haitaka, another capturable Hoshidan general.

Kuma and gera can also translate to bear and galley respectively, fitting both his physical build and his role as a general.

Trivia

  • Oddly, during the cut-scene of his first appearance in Chapter 14 of Conquest, Kumagera's map sprite will appear as a generic Oni Chieftain. Once the cut-scene is over, and Preparations menu appears, his sprites of the generic Oni Chieftain will then change into his unique one.
  • Kumagera's mask is similar to Legion's, having the eyes be pitch black with bright yellow pupils. Though, the yellow pupil for Legion's is actually part of his eye as shown when he blinks. Oddly enough, the two are also given the role of attempting an assassination on a ruler of some sort, ex: King Marth and King Garon, respectively.
