“That Elliot just can't handle the fact that I'll have nothing to do with him. God, I can't stand conceited men like him. I need a man the calibre of my dear brother. That's why I'll never marry.”
—Lachesis in Genealogy of the Holy War

Lachesis is a playable character from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

She is the princess of Nordion and the younger half-sister of Eldigan. She adores her brother to the point that she believes that she will never marry due to knowing a man like him. If paired up, she will be the mother of Diarmuid and Nanna. She is a multi-purpose unit.

Story[]

Lachesis is first seen when Eldigan and the Cross Knights depart from Nordion Castle to fight against the Heirhein army led by Elliot in Chapter 1. She later appears in Chapter 2 when she attempts to stop Eldigan from negotiating with King Chagall in order to prevent a war between Agustria and Grannvale from occurring. Lachesis mentions that Chagall murdered his own father and therefore would not listen to anyone, but Eldigan ignores her concerns and departs for Agusti. When she learns that Eldigan has been imprisoned in Agusti for angering Chagall, she also discovers that Elliot is taking advantage of the situation to invade Nordion under orders from his father. She decides to defend Nordion Castle along with Eve, Alva, and Eva, the three knights whom Eldigan left behind to protect her. Around this time, she requests aid from Sigurd, who is stationed in a castle within Verdane that is close to its border with Agustria.

Once Sigurd comes to her aid, Lachesis asks him to rescue Eldigan, and joins his army. If her three guardian knights survive until the end of the chapter, she receives the Knight Ring from them before they return to Nordion. During Chapter 3, she can convince Eldigan to stop fighting Sigurd and instead try to convince Chagall to end the war as soon as possible. However, this ultimately results in Eldigan being decapitated by the king, leading Lachesis to declare that she will never forgive Chagall.

Lachesis survives the Battle of Belhalla and thereafter brings Nanna to Leonster to live with Finn, while Diarmuid is sent to stay with the other initial members of the Liberation Army in Isaach. She becomes a surrogate mother of sorts for Leif during this time, and seems to become acquainted with Selphina. Eventually, Lachesis decides to reunite with Diarmuid and begins a journey across the Aed Desert, during which she mysteriously vanishes without a trace. Although her fate is never revealed, it is suggested from a scrapped idea originating from Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 that she may have been captured by the Loptr Church and turned to stone. While Diarmuid reveals in both of games that he learned from Lewyn that she disappeared, he states in Thracia 776 that she may still be alive somewhere with her whereabouts unknown.

Personality[]

Lachesis is a strong-willed individual with a sharp tongue. She is first introduced as a pampered princess, but throughout the events of the war, she grows into a strong and astute woman.[1]

Lachesis has a great sense of pride and prefers to make her own choices rather than letting others decide for her. She holds her half-brother Eldigan in high regard, willing to open up to others who personally know him, as seen by her changed behavior towards Beowolf once he says that he is his friend. She does not consider Chagall to be her king and despises him. She declares that she would rather die than marry Elliot, who is infuriated by her rejection.

Lachesis initially starts out as an extremely weak unit that is difficult to train. She joins you as an underleveled level 2 unit with mediocre starting stats other than her Speed. Additionally, her growths are actually very weak, with only Strength and Luck being above average and her being among the bottom 5 for overall growths in the first generation. Compounding this problem is the fact that on the map you recruit her, she has 3 Paladins following her around attacking all enemy units in range other than Bosses. These circumstances make it difficult for her to attack anything and she will mostly be stuck as a healer until she reaches level 20. The Paladins slaying enemy units means lost EXP for your other characters. Even worse, if any of them die, Lachesis will miss out on the Knight Ring, which allows a foot unit to finish using their Movement and equip different weapons after attacking much like a mounted unit would. Since she will become mounted upon Promotion, it is probably best to sell this item to another character such as Sylvia or Ayra. Many players will opt to keep her away from combat on the map she is recruited to protect her Paladins and secure the Knight Ring.

There are, however, some options to train Lachesis quickly and bypass her weak beginnings. She can engage in Boss Abuse by repeatedly healing injured characters wounded by Macbeth, or by eventually engaging him herself when she can afford to take a hit from him. Dew can give her any gold he has obtained from enemies or villages. She can stand outside of your home castle and repeatedly use the staff on a character to boost her levels. Another option is to give her the Elite Ring that is obtained in the same chapter to double her EXP gain, though the item is very expensive and it will probably not be possible for Lachesis to easily land a killing blow on Voltz.

Once Lachesis hits Promotion, she will become amazing. She receives an astonishing +25 to her stats, becomes mounted, gains 3 Movement, and promotes to the best class in the game: Master Knight. Master Knight allows her A-level use of all weaponry other than Light and Dark magic, where she will be able to use C-level Light magic. At this point she will arguably become one of your best units due to her huge boost and high versatility.

The problem, however, lies in actually getting her there, and the boss abuse and turn wastage required to do so may be unappealing to those aiming for a low turn count. Ultimately, while she remains viable in casual playthroughs due to her massive promotional gains, actually grinding her up to promotion is a headache many efficiency runners despise having to go through (and therefore avoid).

It is highly advisable for Lachesis to speak to Eldigan in Chapter 3 to not only receive the Lands Sword, but to have him leave the battlefield permanently.

Mother Overview[]

Finding a suitable partner for Lachesis can be a bit tricky, as she has a few obstacles that make it difficult for a male to be a good fit for her. Her daughter Nanna is a Troubadour that ideally wants well rounded stats with a respectable Magic stat, while her son Diarmuid is a Free Knight that will generally want more impressive physical stats than Nanna, though depending on his father he might wind up being pretty good at wielding Magic Swords, a rare trait for units in Genealogy of the Holy War. The children will generally require a father with Pursuit, since Lachesis does not have it and it severely limits her children if they do not inherit it.

Lachesis is best paired with Beowolf or Azelle. Alec is a a convenient fit, but he is essentially a worse version of Beowolf. Naoise, Finn, Lex, and Claud can be decent choices that have some flaws. The rest are generally poor fits either due to a lack of Pursuit, no inheritable weapons, or poor growths.

  • Beowolf: This is often considered the ideal pairing for maximizing Diarmuid's potential, as he will be able to inherit A-level Swords, the Pursuit and Charge skills, and a high Strength growth which will allow Diarmuid to quickly become a very strong mounted unit. The stat growths he offers to Nanna also mean that she will likely be able to hold her own in melee even before promotion, though her healing capabilities will suffer a bit. In addition, while Thracia 776 supports the Finn pairing, it also supports this pairing, as Diarmuid can use the Beo Sword; the only other unit who can use this sword, Fergus, is rumored to be Beowolf's illegitimate son, and the fact Nanna cannot use the sword can easily be attributed to the sword possibly only accepting male wielders, the fact she largely focuses on healing, or Finn marrying a widowed Lachesis and fathering Nanna at some point after the Battle of Belhalla, making both pairings simultaneously canon and Diarmuid and Nanna half-siblings.
  • Azelle: Pairing Lachesis with Azelle is a great choice, as it provides both of the children with high Magic and Strength. This will make Nanna an excellent healer, and Diarmuid will turn out extremely well rounded, allowing him to wield Magic Swords quite well. Azelle will be able to pass on B-level Swords to Diarmuid, giving him some good options for inheritance. Both children will also have Pursuit, which is important for Lachesis' children to inherit. This pairing is probably the fairest to both children as Diarmuid will still turn out great and Nanna will turn out significantly better with Azelle as her father, and arguably could be Lachesis' best pairing. The only real downside is that both children will have quite low Skill growth.
  • Alec: This pairing is solid, but redundant due to Beowolf. Their growths are almost identical, with Beowolf passing on slightly higher HP and Strength growth while Alec passes on slightly higher Luck. Alec can pass on Nihil, making the children immune to the critical effects of the Horseslayer weapon and Killer weapons. Unfortunately, very few enemies in the game even wield these weapons(and in the Horseslayer's case, it is heavy and inaccurate enough that it probably is not much of a threat to begin with), so the skill is of marginal use to them. The main difference between the Beowolf and Alec would be Beowolf's ability to pass on A-level Swords, while Alec can only pass on B-level Swords even after promotion and therefore cannot pass the best Swords down to Diarmuid. Still, if Beowolf is already smitten with someone else, Alec can make a good substitute as they are similar to the point of practically being the same thing. It is recommended that if you choose this pairing, you try to have Alec pass on a Brave Sword to Diarmuid.
  • Naoise: Naoise is interesting in that he can make Diarmuid an even stronger unit than Beowolf or Alec can, but this absolutely requires Naoise to pass on the Pursuit Ring to him. Without that item, the pairing fails completely. If he does have it, Diarmuid can inherit B-level swords, Critical, Charge, Pursuit, and some good growths that make Diarmuid more durable and offensively potent than other fathers. Still, this requires Naoise to hog some potent items(including a Brave Sword if he wants to maximize Diarmuid's potential), and Nanna will suffer with no Pursuit and limited Magic capacity. This pairing should only really be taken if you want to maximize Diarmuid's potential at the cost of Nanna turning out pretty average.
  • Finn: Some players choose this pairing since it is considered canon due to the events of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, and Finn can make a decent fit. He provides Lachesis' children with the Pursuit skill they direly need and above average stat growths to boot. The Miracle skill is also a nice bonus. However, Finn will be unable to pass any weapons down to Diarmuid, and additionally Finn will have the rather severe drawback of being stripped of all of his Lances in the second generation if he is a father, though the children generation are usually far superior that Finn will likely not see much uses anyways. Finn can have a special conversation with Nanna after he rejoins which will give her a nice 5 point boost to Speed, but she will otherwise turn out decent but unremarkable. Overall, a popular pairing due to the story but there are probably better father options if you want to optimize Lachesis' children.
  • Lex: Lex is rarely a bad father thanks to his Paragon skill. This pairing drastically increases their speed of promotion and thanks to Lex's Minor Nál blood, Lachesis' children will have high growth rates in HP, Strength, and Defense, making them extremely durable and allowing them to stay near the front lines, where Nanna can heal any units in danger and both children can use their Charisma skill to support your other units. The biggest drawbacks to this pairing is that Lex cannot pass any weapons to Diarmuid, and he does not have Pursuit which really negatively impacts the children. If you choose this pairing, it is recommended that Lex pass the Pursuit Ring down to Diarmuid and perhaps have Lachesis pass a Magic Ring on to Nanna.
  • Claud: Notable because his Bragi Holy Blood boosts the unit's Staff level, allowing Nanna to inherit B-rank Staves from Lachesis. This pairing maximizes Nanna's potential as a Staff user, but weakens her ability to fight considerably, and compromises Diarmuid by leaving him no inherited weapons or skills, and irregular growths more suited for a Mage. You do, however, have the option of passing Diarmuid some items that will turn him into an interesting versatile hybrid. Not only will he be good at wielding Magic Swords, but he will have unusually high Resistance for a physical unit. If you can pass him a Pursuit Ring, he may actually turn out quite well.

Conversations[]

In Chapter 2, if Sigurd speaks to Lachesis, she will be recruited.

In Chapter 2, after Lachesis is recruited, if Dew does not have a lover, Dew may speak to her to initiate a conversation, in which she will gain the Thief Sword and 50 love points with him.

In Chapter 2, after Amphony Castle is captured, Beowolf may speak to Lachesis, resulting in her gaining two points of Strength, two points of Skill, one point of Defense, and 100 love points with him.

In Chapter 3, if Lachesis speaks to Eldigan, Eldigan will leave the battlefield, and she will receive the Lands Sword.

In Chapter 5, after Phinora Castle is captured, if Lachesis' lover is either Beowolf, Naoise, or Dew, she may speak to her lover, but nothing will result of it.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (Mitsuki Oosawa Manga)[]

The manga focuses on Lachesis' relationships with both Eldigan and Finn. It's said that Lachesis is the illegitimate daughter of the Nordion lord and a beautiful maid, whom he fell for as she helped him go through the grief coming from the death of Eldigan's mother. But when the maid found out that she was pregnant, she ran away leaving only a letter to her lord/lover. Lachesis grew up in a small village, shunned by the other children over not having a father.

When Lachesis was 12 years old, she and her mother were located and summoned into the Nordion court. Then, her parents officially married and Lachesis was acknowledged as the Princess of Nordion. She had difficulties fitting in a highborn court at the beginning, but the then-single Eldigan helped her get used to it and cheered her up; i.e. in their first meeting he helped her to punish Elliot for his bullying of others, and later rescued her when he tried to pretty much hunt her down and kill her. This caused her to fall in love with him, despite their common bonds; on the other hand Eldigan also secretly loved her, which caused tension between her and his wife Iria (a renamed, redesigned Grahnye, whom he wed through an arrangement) and, at least once, between him and their father. Right before he confronts Chagall, Eldigan does openly tell Lachesis that he loves her in a non-brotherly way; he refuses to have sex with her when she offers him her virginity, however, as he's aware that he will die soon and Lachesis would be ostracized. He gives her the Earth Sword and a first and last kiss on the lips before leaving, hoping that someday they'll be reborn in different families and therefore able to marry.

Regarding Finn, he is initially assigned by Quan to be Lachesis' bodyguard. On one hand he soon develops strong feelings for Lachesis, which cause him to struggle between his burgeoning love for her and his duty as her protector; on the other she's mostly polite but tends to keep him at arms' length, and she also struggles between her loyalty to her brother and her desire to become a more active member of Sigurd's army. When Eldigan is executed, Finn is the one who relays the cruel news to everyone, and when Lachesis is in denial he first calls her out on it, then hugs her as she screams and collapses. With time, he becomes her strongest support as she falls into despair and barely manages to hold on herself; he goes as far as stabbing himself with her Earth Sword to try snapping her out of it. From then on, they open up more to one another; later they confess to each other and spend the night together before he has to return to Leonster, hoping that he will gain enough reputation and wealth to marry her without trouble. It turns out that he left unknowingly her with child.

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, Lachesis (Λάχεσις) was the second of the Three Fates, otherwise known as the Moirae. They were white-robed personifications of destiny, who controlled the metaphorical thread of life of every mortal from birth to death. Lachesis measured the thread of life with her rod. The name Raquesis is simply a corruption of this name, with a French spelling to possibly signify Lachesis' dignity and nobility.

Trivia[]

  • The Fire Emblem Treasure family tree and Nanna's lover conversation with Ares reveal that Eldigan and Lachesis have different mothers.
  • A villager in Chapter 2 remarks that Lachesis and Eldigan seem to act closer than just siblings. While it is stated in the lover conversation between Nanna and Ares in the final chapter that Lachesis had romantic feelings for Eldigan, it is unclear whether or not he loved her in the same way. However, their relationship is portrayed as unambiguously romantic in the Mitsuki Oosawa manga adaptation.
  • Her SpotPass team in Awakening shows reference to the three Cross Knights (Eve, Eva, and Alva) protecting her in Chapter 2 of Genealogy of the Holy War.
  • Lachesis shares her English voice actress Cristina Vee (aka Cristina Valenzuela) with Shadow Dragon's Athena, Shadows of Valentia's Tatiana, and Three Houses' Edelgard before she was later recast by Tara Platt.
  • Lachesis is the first female character in the series to able to use axes and bows. She gains access to them as a Master Knight.
  • Lachesis has numerous similarities to Clarine from Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade:
    • Both have blonde hair.
    • Both are members of nobility with strong wills.
    • Both are mounted (Though only after promotion for Lachesis).
    • Both can use Staves.
    • Both can use magic after promotion.
    • Both have an older brother that they admire above everyone else (Eldigan for Lachesis and Klein for Clarine.)
      • The player also gains something from both brothers if their respective siblings speak with them. (The Lands Sword from Eldigan and Klein being recruited.)
    • Both are rescued by the player in some way before they are recruited. (Lachesis from Elliot and Clarine from Erik.)
      • Both of the characters they are rescued from are Cavaliers as well.
