“Sure, I'll take you on. But it's going to hurt! When I fight, it's with claws out.”
—Lethe to Ike in a support conversation

Lethe is a playable character from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. She is a Cat Laguz from the Beast tribe of Gallia, the leader of a small platoon of Gallian soldiers, and the older twin sister of Lyre.

Profile[]

In Path of Radiance, if Lethe and Ranulf share an A rank in Support Conversations, Ranulf will offer Lethe the opportunity to return to Gallia, leaving Ike and the Crimean Liberation Army behind her. Lethe will decline this offer, promising to defeat Ashnard alongside the Crimean Army.

Lethe appears as a boss in the Radiant Dawn chapter, A Reason to Fight, but the player is not required to fight or defeat Lethe in order to advance through this chapter.

Personality[]

Fierce and agile, Lethe is known as one of the harshest characters in the Tellius series, with her honor and respect for her duty leading her to be extremely intimidating, strictly adhering to her role as a beast-tribe warrior and commander, often being strict on herself and others. Despite this, Lethe does care for her comrades, as can be observed from the contents of her death quote.

Though she serves Caineghis and Ranulf, Lethe does not share their belief of pursuing a policy of peaceful coexistence with the Beorc. Her fundamental disgust with human existence shows when she was tasked with leading Ike to Castle Gallia. She has had trouble trusting Beorc having studied the history of the Beorc and Laguz –where “humans” had exploited and enslaved the “sub-humans.” When Soren provoked her, the already tense emotions she felt toward them rapidly escalated. However, after witnessing Ike use himself as a shield to help dissolve the situation, she began to change her outlook having seen that not all Beorc are bad.

Lethe's strong attitude can occasionally invite misunderstandings, and was the reason behind her and her sister Lyre not speaking to each other for a long time. It was not until they reunited in the Laguz Alliance where they reconciled. Despite those arguments, Lethe only desires for Lyre's safety, and will always try to protect Lyre, even if she has to be mean to her.

Lethe joins with Mordecai as one of the first two beast units that the player is able to use in Path of Radiance. In comparison to her other feline fellow, she has lower HP, Strength and Defense, but greater Skill, Speed and Resistance. However, what gives her an edge over Mordecai is that she starts every map transformed, allowing her to immediately contribute offensively while simultaneously evading most attacks. However, one must pay caution to the transformation gauge; the moment she phases out of her beast form, she becomes much more vulnerable unless she has the Demi Band equipped.

Lethe comes with the Beorcguard and is arguably one of the better users of it due to her tendency to charge on the frontlines often, and her lack of ability to hit and run unlike cavalry mounts will often leave her as bait for enemy attacks; her heavy weight when transformed also means rescuing her is generally not an option and can only be performed by certain characters such as Haar or a promoted Jill. However, much like all her Laguz companions, she gains experience slowly and doesn't level up often, and investing BEXP into her tends to be prohibitively expensive; as a result, unless one gives Lethe preferential treatment, she'll fall behind more and more through the chapters as Beorc characters promote and enemy offense becomes increasingly more merciless.

Overall, Lethe is solid when she joins, but on the later chapters her contributions will most likely diminish, especially if her Speed growths are unlucky; Most of her ability to perform relies on doubling foes, and if she is no longer able to do so, she's better off out of the battlefield.

In Part II, Lethe will be a pretty decent unit, although by no means the best. Her stats are decent all across the board, with very high Speed, yet she has somewhat low growths and gains very low EXP from kills while transformed, making it hard for her to take off. As a Cat, Lethe's biggest disadvantage is her quick transformation times, meaning she can only stay in her transformed form for a few rounds, and keeping her transformed for longer periods of time will require heavy usage of Olivi Grass.

In Part III onward, Lethe is still able to perform double attacks somewhat reliably due to her high Speed, but her other stats will prove to be a detriment to her. Lethe's Defense and Strength are low, meaning that she will most likely sustain large amounts damage, alongside inflicting low amounts of damage at the same time. It doesn't help that her availability doesn't match the Greil Mercenaries' either, she gains only around 10 EXP at best on Normal Mode per kill in Part III on regular enemies, and her untransformed bases don't allow her to deal damage at all for training purposes, resulting into a unit who is very difficult to grow. An Energy Drop might fix her damage output somewhat (effectively 4 points of Strength instead of 2), but after that, she will still struggle really hard to level up outside of getting help from Bonus EXP, and will always suffer from the ephemeral cats' transformation gauge.

In general, Lethe is considered a one-and-done character; she contributes well in Part II for two chapters, but largely falls off by Part III, while still being usable for chip damage, but nothing beyond, unless privileged by the player.

New Year's Claw Lethe
Lethe new years claw pop01 We're not the only ones celebrating the New Year. It turns out the laguz celebrate the occasion too, and they do it in style! This year, Lethe has come to represent the laguz and join us in celebrating, wearing New Year garb!
Lethe new years claw pop02 People often think this kind of clothing is difficult to move around in, but that won't stop Lethe. She looks as nimble and agile as ever!
Lethe new years claw pop03 That lion's-head mask she's carrying is used in the lion dance, a traditional New Year performance. In some cultures, it's good luck to get “bitten” by the lion during the dance—they say that if it bites a child on the head, they'll grow up to be strong and healthy! (I guess it doesn't bite hard, then!)
Lethe new years claw pop04 I hope Lethe enjoys celebrating the New Year in a different way than how they do it in Gallia. Let's put our differences behind us and work together to keep the peace!

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, Lethe was one of the five rivers of Hades. Those who drink from it will forget their past lives. Lethe was also the name of the Greek spirit of forgetfulness and oblivion, with whom the river was often identified.

In Classical Greek, the word lethe literally means "oblivion", "forgetfulness", or "concealment". It is related to the Greek word for "truth", aletheia (ἀλήθεια), which through the privative alpha literally means "un-forgetfulness" or "un-concealment".

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly enough, Lethe's eye color differs between her two forms. While her eyes are purple when she is in her human form, her feline form possesses yellow eyes.
  • Lethe shares her English VA, Kirsten Day, with Constance from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
