—In-game description, The Blazing Blade
The Light Rune (光のルーン Hikari no rūn) is an item that debuts in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. When used, the Light Rune creates a barrier on a space adjacent to its user, preventing all units from traversing it for a set number of turns. Due to this, the Light Rune is often used to create bottlenecks that the player can tactically employ in order to eradicate their foes. The exact properties composing the Light Rune's structure are sketchy at best, but judging from both its name and its animations, it is quite evident that Light magic is involved in its construction. Along with the Mine, the Light Rune is one of few items that can be placed on any given map.
In Radiant Dawn, the Light Rune is renamed to the Shine Barrier (光の結界 Hikari no kekkai), and functions in the exact same manner as its predecessor, creating a barrier that prevents all units from traversing a selected space. In Chapter 3-11 of this game, a majority of the enemy Sages carry Light Runes. This, coupled with the fact that Pits that can paralyse units for a turn are scattered throughout the map, grants the enemy a massive tactical advantage in allowing them to set up bottlenecks fairly prolifically, resulting in it being a chapter that can prove to be rather difficult to complete.

Light runes normally cannot be placed on top of units. However, if an enemy is obscured by Fog of War, the game will allow the player to do so.
