“Wh-What's that face for?! You're scaring me, Holmes! Waaaaaah! Save me, Katri!”
—Maerhen

Maerhen (メルヘン Meruhen, fan translated as Maerchen) is a playable character from TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga. He is the leader of the Isla Pirates and the older brother of Poem. He is also the boss of Map 13. Despite his appearance, he is a deeply religious man.

Profile[]

Prior to his first appearance, Maerhen captured Renee during her search for Meriah, causing Attrom to pursue him. During a battle against the Sea Lion, he uses Renee as a hostage in an attempt to force Holmes to surrender. After being severely wounded by Holmes's crew, he is nursed back to health by Katri. To return the favor, Maerhen reveals that he spared her caretaker, Law, because he was a priest, and treated him with great respect. He also joins Holmes's group, despite being disliked by everyone except Katri.

In the ending, Maerhen's identity is entirely forgotten by both Holmes and Runan.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Seemingly intentionally, Maerhen's stats are sub-par, and he has the worst growths in the game by far.  His limited utility comes from his exclusive but double-edged skill Mug. This skill will automatically steal the weapons and items of enemies Maerhen defeats, but after it activates, any allied units that stand within 3 tiles of him will have their avoid and hit rates lowered by 50. Additionally, since Maerhen does not have much strength to make effective use of Mug on his own, he will require the assistance of allies to soften up enemies for him.  If instead the player does not want to bother with using Mug, Maerhen is an excellent candidate to fill the weapon shop at Ligria, which requires a male character to leave the party until Chapter 31.

Etymology[]

Maerhen's name comes from Märchen, which is German for "fairy tale." This is similar to his brother's name, Poem, which is also a kind of literature.

Trivia[]

  • There is a running gag that Holmes can never remember Maerhen's name.
  • According to a blog post by Shouzou Kaga, he considered redoing TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga with similar mechanics to Berwick Saga. In this idea for a remake, Maerhen would have been a Thief Master with more skills and better performance.
