“I'm sorry. I don't really know what to say. I'm not very good at talking to people. The truth is, I didn't interact with people too often before I came here.”
—Marianne

Marianne is a playable character from the game Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. Marianne is a student at the Officers Academy who is from the Leicester Alliance and is a member of the Golden Deer. She possesses a secretive Crest and is 17 at the start of the game.

Profile[]

Early Life[]

Marianne is the daughter of an unmentioned noble within the Leicester Alliance. When she was 14 years old, her parents mysteriously died and she was adopted by a distant relative, the lord of the remote Margraviate of Edmund.

Academy Phase[]

Marianne enrolls in Garreg Mach Monastery Officers Academy in Imperial Year 1180 and joins the Golden Deer. In her Support with Hanneman, she reveals her adoptive father sent a letter to the church with a large donation to not be tested for a Crest.

War Phase[]

Should Marianne be recruited but has been defeated in Classic Mode during the Academy Phase, she disappears with a single horse after the Battle of Garreg Mach. She is unable to make it to the promised reunion five years later and her fate is left unknown.

Verdant Wind[]

Fulfilling the promise the Golden Deer class made five years prior, Marianne reunites with her classmates in Chapter 13, arriving with Lysithea and Raphael to rout bandits in the vicinity of Garreg Mach. She resolves to stay and fight back against the Empire alongside Byleth and Claude and to not run from her troubles anymore.

Other Routes[]

If Marianne was not recruited during the Academy Phase, she uniquely does not appear at all during the War Phase in Azure Moon, Silver Snow, or Crimson Flower, leaving her fate unknown. As her A Support with Byleth mentions she prayed for her own death, it's implied she has committed suicide.

If recruited during the Academy Phase, she will join on behalf of her adoptive father, whose interest is to build up relations with the faction that Byleth had taught for political reasons, although she states that should he recall her, she would refuse his request.

If recruited to the Black Eagles in Crimson Flower, Marianne will state that she has become enamored with Edelgard's strength and charisma, and that she will fight alongside her and the professor no matter what happens.

Paralogue[]

Rumors have spread across the monastery of a beast said to kill people in the middle of the night in a forest. Originally known as Maurice, it was rumored that those who bore his Crest would also transform into a hideous beast like him and kill unsuspecting people. His latest descendant, Marianne, has drawn suspicion from the uninformed masses, with a Crest scholar, in particular, approaching her and asking for her to come with him. Seeing her plight, Byleth agrees to help her confront the beast and slay it if needed, bringing their students for help. In the forest, the beast approaches Marianne and realizes that she bears his crest, but nonetheless attacks her and sends more monster after her and her allies. After a fierce battle, the Beast is slain and he thanks his descendant for finally putting his soul to rest. The sword Maurice originally carried, Blutgang, is found by his corpse, which she takes back to the Monastery. With the sword in hand, the rumors die down as the truth had been revealed as a result of the battle.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Personality[]

Marianne is one of the most unsociable members of the current students of the Officers Academy. She actively avoids most people as she fears that her presence will bring them misfortune and thus has a gloomy visage, complete with bangs that shadow her eyes and noticeable bags under her eyes. She often finds it hard to talk to others as a result and has spoken so infrequently that there are many students who have never heard her voice before. Even if she does speak, she is hesitant to express herself or her opinions, tending to speak in short statements and will try to detach from the conversation as quickly as she can. Marianne's speech is frequently punctuated by sheepish "um"s and "I'm sorry"s. She is soft-spoken, but also polite and tries to avoid inconveniencing people even in a minor manner. However, her self-deprecation sometimes makes people angry at her, especially short-tempered ones like Leonie.

Her gloomy, withdrawn nature is due to her Crest of Maurice, also known as the Crest of the Beast. Said Crest has a dubious reputation for cursing members of her family and is rumored to control a beast said to kill unsuspecting visitors of a particular forest. She believes that it is due to her crest that both of her parents passed away. Her adoptive father is among the few who are privy to her secret and genuinely cares for her. In order to protect her, he paid a large sum of money to the monastery to keep her crest a secret, so most staff are unaware of her crest. He also forbade her from telling anyone of her crest for her safety, of which she has honored. This resulted in her reclusive nature in which she fears having her secret let out if she becomes too involved, especially in battle where the crest can occasionally emerge.

After the timeskip, she has gained significantly more confidence and has lost some of her gloominess, notably looking much more lively and healthier as a result. The War provides many catalysts for Marianne to further grow and become accepting with her Crest, namely several A-Supports and especially her Paralogue. By completing this scenario, Marianne can absolve her guilt, learning that the rumors were not true and that she is not shackled to them. Seeing her Crest as a blessing rather than a curse, she will display her Crest more openly in battle, with the game reflecting this development by showing the true name of her Crest.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

She has a fondness for animals in general as she is often seen conversing with them during her free time. She has a particular affinity for birds and horses, the latter of which has her bond with a horse named Dorte. When exploring the Monastery, Marianne is most commonly found near the stables. She appears to be deeply religious, and prays to the Goddess every day. This is not to say her devotion is out of sheer belief, as she considered herself a curse and hoped that praying to the Goddess would allow her to escape it, although this does not appear to be the case in her A Support with Byleth.

Recruitment[]

Marianne will automatically be recruited if Byleth chooses to teach the Golden Deer house in Chapter 1. If Byleth chose to teach any other house, Marianne can transfer to their class if they have high enough Magic and Riding proficiency. The player can decrease the required threshold if they have a support rank with her, and upon reaching B+, she may ask to join their class on a free weekday (even if their Magic or Riding is not high enough).

Overall[]

Secret Book (Artwork)
Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Marianne is the main healer of the Golden Deer house, but differs from other healers like Mercedes, Linhardt, or Flayn in that her Faith spell list is more offensively oriented, having access to Aura and Silence, but she still does her healing job well thanks to Physic. Her budding talent in Lances and strength in Riding means that she can become an ideal Holy Knight, and her talent in swords means she can do quite well with a Levin Sword or Blutgang (since they scale off her Magic). However, her low Strength means that she should only use magic weapons or spells (or Soulblade or Frozen Lance, which allows her to use her Magic and can make her potent against Axe and Sword users if she has Axebreaker or Swordbreaker respectively), as she will otherwise deal poor damage. Much like other mages, her physical bulk is poor, and her Speed is only average, so she will tend to be taken out easily if a fast enemy can reach her, especially Falcon Knights. Her personal skill makes her good to pair up with Cavalry or Fliers, giving Marianne some self-sustain as long as she sticks close to them, but it's otherwise very niche.

Another problem with Marianne is that her array of offensive spells tends to be inaccurate (besides Cutting Gale), which is compounded by her only having average Dexterity growths. However, she tends to have a high critical hit chance with her spells, so she can dish out some powerful attacks if she lands her shots. Marianne can overcome her accuracy issues if she masters Valkyrie and acquires Uncanny Blow, masters Archer for Hit +20, or by equipping a battalion that improves her accuracy.

Marianne has overall a wide variety of skill strengths that allow her to feasibly fit into a grand total of five master classes, more than nearly any other character. This includes the aforementioned Holy Knight, her most natural promotion, but she can also be a Mortal Savant, Dark Knight, Falcon Knight, or Gremory with little issue. Dark Knight is overall better than Holy Knight when one is using her more offensively; it comes with no decrease in healing ability and greatly increased damage with her Reason attacks. By comparison, Holy Knight's White Tomefaire only buffs the feeble Nosferatu and Aura, which, although a very powerful tome, is limited to just three uses. However, Holy Knights have a higher Resistance bonus and growth, so if her Magic growth is either good or bad enough that Black Tomefaire no longer makes the difference between one and two round kills, she is still best as a Holy Knight. As for the rest, Falcon Knight is generally inferior to Dark Flier if one owns the Expansion Pass. Mortal Savant is interesting but lacks Canto and has only 6 Movement compared to Holy, Dark and Falcon Knight, while also having a debilitating -10 Speed growth, although it does allow for very high damage with Blutgang. Finally, Gremory is similarly handicapped by low movement, and this time does not have the benefit of Swordfaire, but its bonuses of doubled uses and +5 magic (among other bonuses) are very powerful due to her invaluable spells like Thoron, Fimbulvetr and Aura having low uses. Thoron can become her main attack as a Gremory, allowing her to outrange Snipers with Black Magic Range +1 equipped.

Marianne's above-average Charm growth and strength in Swords also means she can make for an adequate Dancer, with Sword Avoid +20 providing a means for her to dodge incoming attacks; the class also lets her use her great spell list to full effect. She is arguably better suited for the class than Hilda, who has a weakness in Authority and is better suited for Axe-based classes, though Hilda does have access to a siege tome in the form of Bolting (though Constance is a better user of said spell). If one does decide to make Marianne a Dancer, it would also be beneficial for her to master Trickster for Duelist's Blow, improving her evasiveness when she initiates combat. One could alternatively get her Flying skill high enough to acquire Alert Stance+ instead of Duelist's Blow, but there are better candidates for this build such as Ferdinand, Petra, etc.

Marianne can also feasibly become a Falcon Knight, making use of Levin Swords and her twin magic combat arts (one each for lances and swords) to get early kills. Late game she gains access to Blutgang (and Arrow of Indra if playing Crimson Flower) to further solidify her magic damage potential. This route compensates for her low HP and Speed growths, though it may be difficult to level early on due to her fragile nature, but sacrifices her access to spells. A better choice would be to class her as a Dark Flier via the Cindered Shadows DLC, as it allows her to continue using her spells while having flight capability. The added skill of Transmute is also useful as her high Resistance allows her to form the role of Resistance-tank while not a dedicated White mage, unlike other Res tanks such as Linhardt, Flayn, and Mercedes.

Overall, Marianne fills a unique niche as one of the few strong offensive White Magic mages, as well as being perhaps the best candidate for Holy Knight. While she isn't as good a healer as Mercedes or Linhardt, nor as powerful offensively as Lysithea or Constance, she is still a versatile hybrid that can heal, deal damage, use Silence, and retain good mobility thanks to her strengths in Riding and Flying.

Base Set[]

Marianne is an extremely potent, hard hitting Blue Infantry mage with an impressive 41 neutral Atk. While she may not have the Spd of most of her competitors to pile damage naturally through her stats onto a fair number of foes, she makes up for it through her 75 magical bulk. Her only main downside is her low physical bulk due to her 17 neutral Def. While she brings nothing particularly new statwise, matching the likes of Micaiah and Ilyana, her real power comes from her unique weapon and access to a well crafted starting base kit.
Icy Fimbulvetr grants Marianne an innate +3 Atk, giving her a total neutral Atk stat of 58. If she starts combat with at least 25% of her maximum HP, she will inflict a massive -6 Atk/Res onto her foes. Additionally, under the same HP threshold to activate, if she is within two spaces of either a Cavalry or Flying ally, she will also guarantee a follow-up attack and will restore 5 HP after combat. Marianne greatly benefits from being with allies of either class, especially Dancer units like Legendary Azura and the Book IV Mythic Heroes just to name a few. While the earlier statement of Marianne not having quite the same offensive pressure naturally statwise, it is easy for her to gain the offensive pressure with her follow-up attacks thanks to her tome.
Iceberg syncs naturally with her high Res and can result in massive 20 true damage on her attacks when it activates. B Duel Infantry 4 grants her a flat +5 HP and +2 Atk/Spd/Def/Res boost plus an Arena score boost for those who are hardcore into Arena Duel. Lull Attack Resistance inflicts an additional -3 Atk/Res on top of her Tome debuff, thus inflicting a total of -9 Atk/Res onto her foes while also neutralizing any buffs they had prior to combat. Finally, Joint Drive Resistance gives her +4 Res during combat if she is within two spaces of an ally, further synching with her tome's effects.

Counters[]

Marianne's low Def is the main way to deal with her as she is unlikely to survive a blow from any physical unit with even a mediocre Atk unless they are Red. While she can handle most Red and Blue mages with relative ease, she struggles against several important Green mages like Legendary Celica and Thrasir, who can obliterate her if they are able to gain the initiative in combat. Baiting her out with high Res Greens is a possible consideration, though she can actually defeat some notable defensive Greens like Fallen Lyon. Guinivere can be a solid check on Marianne due to her effective tome against tome users, but only if Guinivere is the one to initiate.

Skill Inheritance[]

Marianne's only empty skill slot is her Assist, which is easily filled with skills like Draw Back or Reposition which greatly assists in positioning allies out of danger or putting an ally who can protect her in front of her respectively. Most of her skills are well tailored to make her immediately powerful, though her skill A can be easily replaced with skills that give her more focused stats to her Atk/Res during combat like Attack Resistance Solo, Mirror Impact, or flat out Death Blow. Skill C can also be filled with a plethora of alternatives such as skills that boost other stats like Joint Drive Attack or various Smoke and Ploy skills, the latter syncing nicely with her naturally high Res.

Adopted Daughter Marianne
Marianne adopted daughter pop01 Marianne is the adopted daughter of House Edmund, who govern a remote region of the Leicester Alliance. She's a quiet, timid Hero who is devout in her faith.
Marianne adopted daughter pop02 There's a secret to Marianne, however, and it has to do with the Crest she bears. Apparently, her Crest is very rare, but beyond that, not even her relatives know the details—with some exceptions, that is.
Marianne adopted daughter pop03 Perhaps having this secret weighing on her mind is why Marianne struggles when it comes to being social. She's not completely alone, though. She loves animals, and the horses and birds at Garreg Mach seem to love her company.
Marianne adopted daughter pop04 Marianne doesn't like to talk about herself much. Still, I can tell from the way that she treats the animals that she's a very gentle, kind, and pure-hearted person!

Base Set[]

The winner of the women's category of Choose Your Legends 5, Marianne is a Colorless Tome Infantry unit. Though she is dressed in the traditional Fódlan dancer garb, she is not a Dancer, at least in the traditional sense up until her introduction. Because she is not a Dancer, she holds impressive offensive stats with a strong 40 Atk and 41 Spd, both of which have super-assets. Her magical bulk is decent, scoring 73, but trades off her high offense with low physical bulk as 17 Def leaves her vulnerable to physical weapons. Brave Marianne has enough power to be an offensive threat by herself, but her brave skill pushes her capabilities to potentially enemy team wiping if given the chance.
Phantasm Tome grants Marianne an innate +3 Spd boost, pushing her to a solid 44 Spd and going as high as 49 if she has a Spd Asset. If her foe has at least 50% HP at the start of combat, she inflicts -6 Spd/Res and neutralizes any visible buffs to those stats on her foe. Additionally if she initiates combat, the first attack she receives from her foe is reduced by 70%, giving her a huge safety net when fighting physical units that can counterattack her.
What makes Brave Marianne incredibly powerful is her Brave skill, Requiem Dance. If she initiates combat and the skill activates, the ally with the highest HP within 2 spaces of her that has already acted is refreshed. This can lead to some interesting combat tactics it can be used to keep offensive pressure with an offensive ally, helping the likes of units with self-refreshing capabilities like Legendary and Fallen Edelgard and Galeforce users. In tandem with a Dancer, she can also use it to essentially refresh herself and mow down the opposition herself. Because it is also on her Special, she is not susceptible to【Isolation】since it only targets Assist skills. While the skill may take some work to properly use, the sheer potential of this skill makes Brave Marianne a valuable asset on any team.
Attack Speed Unit increases her Atk/Spd by 5 if she is within two spaces of an ally and converts any penalties to these stats become bonuses instead. Null Follow-Up prevents foes from stopping her extremely likely follow-up attacks and prevents her foes from using skills that give them follow-up attacks as well. Time's Pulse helps to accelerate her Special cooldown if she starts her turn at full charge.

Counters[]

On her own, Brave Marianne is weak on the defensive as most if not all physical oriented units can dispatch her if they initiate her. Her colorless status does not really help her defensively as she cannot reduce the damage through color advantage on any unit. Some high Res tanks can take her hits with ease and given that most units of that nature tend to have Distant Counter, they could at least deal some damage before taking her out on their next turn. Ascended Fjorm is one such new unit that does this quite nicely as she also has a damage reduction special that neutralizes what little threat Brave Marianne has on her. While she is immune to【Isolation】in regards to her refreshing capabilities, Guard and skills of similar nature severely hinders her strongest utility trait by denying her the ability to charge it in the first place.

Skill Inheritance[]

Brave Marianne's only empty skill is her Assist skill, which Reposition or Draw Back are two solid choices. Rally skills are also worth considering for more supportive options. Her base kit otherwise is fine as is and does not require any urgent replacing unless desiring for specific set ups for more niche builds.

Meet Some of the Heroes[]

Serene Adherent Marianne
Marianne serene adherent pop01 Marianne is known to be something of a quiet, timid Hero. But for this appearance, she's making a bold change by showing up in an adventurous dancer outfit!
Marianne serene adherent pop02 This new look has a retro design, inspired by the Fódlan of old! I don't know if you noticed, but the fastener on her shoulder is designed to look almost like the Crest of the Beast—that's the Crest that she bears!
Marianne serene adherent pop03 This new attire may come as a surprise on the usually unassuming Marianne, but I think this shows that there's more to her than meets the eye. I bet all of her friends from Garreg Mach will be surprised to see her like this!
Marianne serene adherent pop04 Marianne's new outfit really emphasizes her beauty, and I think it matches her inner beauty as well! I'm sure she'll be able to make plenty of new friends here in Askr with her newfound confidence!

"Just a minute! The following section contains spoilers. Viewing it will cost a lot. Are you prepared to pay for it?"
Marianne (If defeated before the timeskip on Classic Mode)
Disappeared with a single horse after the battle of Garreg Mach. She was unable to make the promised meeting.
Marianne - Survivor of the Curse
Marianne returned home to a hero's welcome. The people praised her talent and acknowledged her as a savior of Fódlan. Her adoptive father groomed her as his successor, teaching her the power of words over weapons. By the time she claimed her inheritance, she had transformed into one of Fódlan's most skilled orators.
Marianne and Byleth (Verdant Wind / Silver Snow)
Byleth announced an engagement to Marianne shortly after being named leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Before they were officially wed, Marianne first returned home to prepare for the ceremony and to study oration and management under her adoptive father. She returned under the Great Tree Moon, and became queen of a restored Fódlan in a grand wedding. The kingdom experienced remarkable growth thereafter, and while Byleth became known as a leader of incredible wisdom, few people of the time understood the depth of the queen's influence.
Marianne and Byleth (Crimson Flower)
Almost immediately after Byleth and Marianne had celebrated their engagement, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Together they fought tirelessly to bring the war to an end so that Fódlan could have lasting peace. Afterwards, they left the Imperial army and were officially wed in Edmund territory. In time, the pair grew into first-rate politicians under the tutelage of Margrave Edmund himself. With the emperor's blessing, they annexed part of Riegan territory, including Derdriu, and used their influence to improve relations and expand trade with foreign nations. Their work greatly contributed to the restoration of the Empire.
Marianne and Byleth (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced an engagement to Marianne shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Before they were officially wed, Marianne first returned home to prepare for the ceremony and to study oration and management under her adoptive father. She returned under the Great Tree Moon, and became the archbishop's wife in a grand wedding. The Kingdom experienced remarkable growth thereafter, thanks to the church, and while the archbishop became known for his incredible wisdom, few people of the time understood the depth of his wife's influence.
Marianne and Dimitri
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. Several years after his coronation, he took Marianne, whom he loved dearly, as his queen. Many of Dimitri's greatest achievements can be traced to wisdom provided by Marianne, who had received tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund. Many years later, when Dimitri fell to illness, he clutched his queen's hand until the very end. The queen's journal, uncovered after her passing, contained recounts of their time together. The last words, penned with trembling hand, are: "I would not trade our time together or the happiness we knew for anything."
Marianne and Claude
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open trade routes with Fódlan, and entered into negotiations with Margrave Edmund. During this time, he was reunited with Marianne, who had grown under her adoptive father's guidance into a wise and talented woman. She offered him her aid, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective nations, they fell deeply in love.
Marianne and Ferdinand (Crimson Flower)
Ferdinand announced his engagement to Marianne just after becoming the new Duke Aegir. While he got started restoring his territory, Marianne returned home to study politics under her shrewd adoptive father. When she returned to Ferdinand's side, they were wed, and with her new skills she proved herself to be an asset to the rebuilding effort. Aegir territory flourished under their reign, becoming one of the most prosperous regions in all Fódlan. It is said that Ferdinand commissioned a bronze statue of his wife to honor her, but that Marianne ordered it to be hidden away in storage for eternity.
Marianne and Ferdinand (Other Routes)
Ferdinand announced his marriage to Marianne just after becoming the new Duke Aegir. With the support of Margrave Edmund, they set to work restoring Aegir territory. The support of Marianne's adoptive father was essential, but not sufficient, for the relief effort. As more difficulties arose, Marianne herself took on an increasing amount of responsibility. She proved quite capable and dedicated, and the Dukedom progressed through a steady recovery under the couple's collective efforts. It is said that Ferdinand commissioned a bronze statue of his wife to honor her achievements, but Marianne ordered it to be hidden away in storage for eternity.
Marianne and Linhardt
Marianne returned home to a warm welcome from her adoptive father, who recognized her wisdom and skill and began to groom her as his successor. Meanwhile, Linhardt abandoned his noble claim, and happened to choose Margrave Edmund's territory as the site at which to continue his Crest research. Edmund took a liking to Linhardt and approved wholeheartedly when the scholar and his daughter expressed their wish to marry. As Edmund's successors, the couple combined Linhardt's brilliance with Marianne's practical wisdom to bring abundance to the people.
Marianne and Ashe
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted, and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing, until his court was blessed with a new adviser in Marianne. Using skills imparted to her by her adoptive father, Marianne helped Ashe to solidify his position. As the prosperity of Gaspard territory grew, so did a love between them, and soon Margrave Edmund saw fit to bless the couple's happy marriage. Years later, Ashe asked Marianne what made her choose to help him in the first place. She simply smiled and said that she decided to make supporting him her dream.
Marianne and Lorenz
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Marianne. Prior to the wedding, she received extensive tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund, so that by the time they were wed she was fully prepared to govern. The pair was particularly successful in providing new innovations in dairy farming, and came to be known as the mother and father of horses and cattle in the region. It is said that Lorenz was rather vexed by the title.
Marianne and Raphael
Raphael returned to his hometown, where he served his liege lord as a knight for a time. Later, he gave it up to pursue his true passion of food by opening up an inn. He got the idea to install a bird feeder outside the place, calling it The Winged Inn & Tavern, and before long, the site began to attract the prettiest birds in the region. Soon after that, Marianne made her first visit, and she and Raphael enjoyed a happy reunion. Seeing her gift in talking to the birds, he invited her to stay. Marianne eventually became known as the woman whose talent for handling animals helped an inn to flourish.
Marianne and Ignatz
Marianne returned home to a warm welcome from her adoptive father, who recognized her wisdom and skill and began to groom her as his successor. During that time, she had a chance reunion with Ignatz, who had persuaded his family to allow him to travel the world as an artist. Marianne wholeheartedly supported his work, and before long, came to be enchanted not merely by the landscapes and portraits of all he had seen in his travels, but also by his character. The romance between artist and patron was considered unusual, but long after their wedding, the story of how they fell in love was immortalized in popular plays.
Marianne and Hilda
After returning to their respective homes, Hilda and Marianne stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. Hilda informed Marianne that her passion for crafting fashionable accessories had given her the idea to start an artisan academy, and in response, Marianne pledged the financial support of the house of Margrave Edmund. Soon, artisan schools began to appear all over Fódlan, producing talented craftsmen and high-quality trade goods, which contributed greatly to the prosperity of Fódlan. The accessories sent to Marianne personally by Hilda became some of the most highly valued treasures in history.
Marianne and Hanneman
After the war, Marianne and Hanneman stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. When Hanneman's Crest research fell on hard times, Marianne was able to secure Margrave Edmund's financial support to allow his work to continue. The research bore fruit in the form of magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests, and the funding allowed these tools to be produced in great number. After Marianne inherited her adoptive father's house, she guided Hanneman to create a branch of research devoted to peaceful applications of Crestology. These advancements, which Hanneman provided, became the legacy of Marianne's later years.

Etymology[]

Marianne is a French name formed from the union of Marie and Anne, versions of English names Mary and Ann, meaning "beloved, and full of grace" or "bitter and graceful".

Maria traces its roots to the Hebrew name Mairyam, meaning "sea of sorrow", or the Egyptian "beloved". Anne comes from the Hebrew Hannah "full of grace".

Edmund is a reference to the main antagonist of Shakespeare's King Lear, the illegitimate son of the Earl of Gloucester who schemes against King Lear's daughters and his own family in order to become the earl himself.

Trivia[]

  • Marianne is the only student that doesn't appear at all in the war phase if not recruited prior to the time-skip.
  • Marianne's Crest appears as a Crest Stone on Aymr, the axe Edelgard often wields after the time-skip.
    • However, Marianne is unable to use the combat art Raging Storm, as the weapon is associated with the Crest of Seiros.
  • Marianne is the third character in the Fire Emblem series to have a named horse: Dorte. This is followed by Beck from New Mystery of the Emblem and Sophie from Fates.
    • Unlike the others, Dorte is not explicitly Marianne's but a horse from Garreg Mach Monastery that Marianne has grown fond of. She does later adopt the horse, as seen in the Crimson Flower route or if she falls in battle before the time-skip. Dorte also appears in Three Hopes during Marianne's critical attack as a Bishop.
  • Despite her love for horses and having Horseback and Flying as Strong Points, she doesn't have a unique battle model as a mounted unit.
  • Marianne has a unique battle model as a Monk, Priest, and Bishop.
    • Otherwise, she uses blue colors for her classes.
  • Marianne shares her English voice actress, Xanthe Huynh, with Eir from Heroes.
