The Mortal Savant is a very powerful offensive class, able to hit physically defensive foes with magic and magically resistant foes with physical attacks, meaning very few enemies will be able to reliably wall them. Their inbuilt access to both Swordfaire and Black Tomefaire means that even if a character is lacking in either Strength or Magic, they should still be able to inflict good damage on both sides. However, they are on the fragile side, with 0% growths to defense and resistance, and a -10% growth in Speed does not help either.

Overview

The Mortal Savant is a very powerful offensive class, able to hit physically defensive foes with magic and magically resistant foes with physical attacks, meaning very few enemies will be able to reliably wall them. Their inbuilt access to both Swordfaire and Black Tomefaire means that even if a character is lacking in either Strength or Magic, they should still be able to inflict good damage on both sides. However, they are on the fragile side, with 0% growths to defense and resistance, and a -10% growth in Speed does not help either. They also lack the +20% crit chance bonus that Swordmaster has, and don't have extra charges for Black magic like Warlock does.

As a result, Mortal Savant is considered by experienced players as an underwhelming class for its tier, as its versatility does not make up for its disadvantages compared to its similar Advanced-tier classes.

Uniform

Mortal Savants wear armor inspired by o-yoroi, the traditional armor of early samurai. A mitsudomoe is worn prominently on their chest, which is a symbol of the Shinto warrior god Hachiman. Generic mortal savants also wear traditional kabuto helmets and men-yoroi in the image of an oni. They carry four swords on their backs, invoking a symbol of death, as the Japanese words for the number 4 and death are pronounced the same.

Notable Mortal Savants

Etymology

The Japanese name of the class is the English word "epitaph," a usually poetic statement on a tomestone describing the deceased person over whom it is placed.

Trivia

  • Mortal Savants have a unique stance when using magic attacks and use kuji-kiri to perform them. These gestures were said to grant ninjas the ability to interact and draw power from the spiritual realm in order to do magical techniques.
