Etymology[]
In Norse Mythology, Níðhöggr is a serpent that devours the roots of the world tree, Yggdrasill due to the insults given to it by Ratatoskr. Níðhöggr's name can translate to "Curse Striker" or "He Who Strikes with Malice" and is said to carry the corpse of a Jotunn during Ragnarok.
Trivia[]
- Níðhöggr's design seems to be based on a doctor; she is wearing what appears to be a white lab coat, her two-headed serpent resembles a stethoscope, and she is always eating fruits which resemble apples, which may be a play on the phrase "an apple a day keeps the doctor away."
- Additionally, her association with apples and snakes may also be inspired by the Bible story Adam and Eve, where the titular duo are tricked by a snake, implied to be a servant of, if not the Devil himself, into disobeying God and eating fruit from the "Tree of the knowledge of good and evil".
- Níðhöggr constantly being drunk and attempting to poison Veronica in the Book VIII Movie may also be a play on the term "alcohol poisoning", as many snakes are known for having poisonous bites.
- Alcohol and other methods of inebriation were also widespread forms of anesthesia to numb the pain patients felt during operations prior to the advent of more modern techniques.
- Níðhöggr is the second Heroes original character to have a humanoid beast form, as her beast form resembles a lamia rather than a snake.
