Profile[]

Nel hails from an alternate timeline of Elyos and is a daughter of the Fell Dragon Sombron of that world. In the alternative Elyos, all of Sombron's children were born as twins and Nel was no exception as she is the elder twin sister of Nil.

Her family was fraught with hostility and death. Similar to the Sombron encountered in the main Elyos, many of Nel's siblings died for his ambitions or were sometimes killed by his own hand for their failure. However, many of Nel's other siblings took it upon themselves to personally kill their weaker twin sibling, thus leaving Sombron with only his most capable children from the beginning. Nel was unusually protective of her younger, weaker twin brother Nil and pledged to keep him safe. Her protectiveness was so strong that when some of her other siblings mockingly offered to kill Nil themselves for her, she killed them in a rage, inadvertently earning Sombron's attention and favor for her deed. As a sign of her protectiveness, Nel gave Nil her dragonstone, promising that the would share her power and that she would always rely on him.

Despite her Fell Dragon blood, Nel defected from Sombron's forces, joining the Divine Dragon's side in the war, most notably the Dragon Monarch Lumera's child, Alear. The war ended with the death of Sombron at the cost of Alear's life as well. With no Divine Dragons left in the world, their blessings for the land rapidly declined. Life in Elyos became a struggle for resources and the four nations began attacking each other. Desperate to stop the hostilities, Nel performed a ritual to summon a hero from another world to end the war for Elyos.

Nel met the Divine Dragon Alear of her world and the two bonded, which would serve as her motivation to defect from Sombron. Nel fought fiercely for the Divine Dragons culminating in the final battle against Sombron with Alear leading the charge. By this point, Nel had fallen in love with Alear. To her horror, she witnessed Sombron and Alear kill each other in their final battle. Devastated by their death, Nel could only watch as Elyos began to decline without the influence of the Divine Dragons despite the Fell Dragon no longer having a grip on the world.

To make matters worse, the war and aftermath caused nearly all of the population of Elyos to die, leaving only Nel, Nil, and a small group of living individuals, the Four Winds, who were loyal to the Divine Dragons, left. Mysterious circumstances led to the revival of the population including the royal families of the four nations, all of which became Corrupted. These Corrupted remained unaware of their status. Due to the declining state of the world and being none the wiser to their true conditions, the four nations independently decided to wage war against one another utilizing their Emblem Bracelets to seize any resources for their people.

Horrified that the world was on the path of destruction and that some unknown force seems to be goading the four nations into a war that may revive Sombron, Nel evoked a ritual to bring a hero from another world to stop the war and reclaim the Emblem Bracelets. While it took several attempts, Nel was successful. Much to her shock, her summoned hero was an Alear from another world, one that was the opposite gender of her Alear.

Fell Xenologue[]

The hero summoned by the ritual was an Alear of another world. Nel informs them the current state of the world and requests that they help her reclaim the Emblem Bracelets as a means of ending the war. For some reason, Nel is cold towards Alear.

Before they can leave Lythos Castle, a mysterious hooded figure attacks the group with the intent of stealing the Bracelet of the Shepherd Exalt. The group is able to fend off the assailant while recovering the Bracelet of the Ancestor. It is here that Alear learns that they cannot evoke the Emblem Bracelet like they could in their world. Nel puts the Emblem within into suspended animation.

Nel leads Alear through Elyos, encountering each of the royal families who openly refuse to relinquish their Emblem Bracelets to the Divine Dragon. Their first stop is in Firene, defeating Alfred and Céline in the process and reclaiming the Bracelet of the Brash General. Their next destination is Brodia, defeating Diamant and Alcryst and reclaiming the Bracelet of the Lonely Heir. After these battles, Nel would secretly leave during the group's rest to take care of private matters.

While heading to Elusia, word arrives that a battle between Elusia and Solm has broken out. Alear and their forces are able to subdue both armies, but both Ivy and Timerra refuse to surrender their Bracelets. Unable to get them to submit, Nel apologizes to Alear and promptly kills the two, claiming the Bracelets of the Strategist and Doting Sister. Alear is understandably horrified, but Nel explains that she had already done the same to the other royals they had encountered, revealing that everyone they have fought was Corrupted. In this moment, Nel, overcome with emotion, blurts out that she loved her world's Alear, thus explaining that her cold interactions thus far was out of grief for their death. Nel excuses herself for a bit to recompose herself, but when she returns, Nil informs her that Alear had left to finish the mission alone.

Lead by Nil, they arrive at a temple where Nil betrays the group, trapping Nel and the Four Winds in the Corrupted infested temple and revealing that he had captured Alear to complete Sombron's mission to carry out his will. Overwhelmed by the Corrupted, the Four Winds give Nel a chance to escape to rescue Alear. Nel is able to confront Nil and defeats him, but Nil knocks her out and takes her to the Fallen Somniel. Using her as leverage, Nil forces Alear to break a special barrier constructed by the other Alear on the final Emblem Bracelet, the Bracelet of the Three Houses.

With the seven Bracelets, Nil takes their power and becomes a Great Fell Dragon and initiates a battle to kill Alear so he can complete his father's goals. With the blessing of the Alear of their world, Nel and Alear are able to defeat Nil after a grueling battle. In the aftermath, Nil reveals that his is not actually Nil, but another one of Sombron's children who had taken his place as requested by the real Nil. Nel informs him that she had long since knew that real Nil was dead; unwilling to to lose a second brother, Nel commits suicide by stabbing herself with a sword to absolve him of his guilt. In her final moments, he reveals that his true name is Rafal. The group can only watch in horror as her Dragonstone breaks as a sign of her death. The shattered Dragonstone loses malicious energy, having been tainted by Sombron to fuel Rafal's self-loathing and pit the two against each other.

Alear informs Rafal that if he shares his lifeforce with Nel, similar to how Lumera had done to them, it is possible to revive her, even if it took a thousand years. With no further reason to stay, Alear extends an invitation to both Nel and Rafal to travel to their world. Rafal refuses to accept the offer outright, leaving the decision to Nel should she awaken and forgive him. Rafal would spend a thousand years giving Nel his energy before she finally revived. Back in Alear's world, only a few days had passed since Alear had returned from the alternative Elyos. Having left a portal open between their worlds, Nel and Rafal eventually accept Alear's offer to fight for their world and arrive in the Somniel.

Sombron's battle quote against Nel hints that he may have had a daughter of similar visage to her in the current timeline, however, she retorts that if such a counterpart existed, she is already dead.

Personality[]

Cool and level-headed, Nel is able to stay calm even under intense pressure and can easily, and coldly, kill others for the greater good without hesitation. Her façade is so solid that she can come off as emotionless. She is rather private with her own affairs and does not say more than what needs to be said. In truth, Nel's stone-faced façade is due to the melancholic remembrance of many lost loved ones as a result of her father's ambitions. Deep down, Nel is warm and caring, unlike most of her fellow Fell Dragon siblings. Having sympathized with the Alear of her world and witnessed the destruction that countless wars have wrought, Nel is protective of humanity as a whole, referring to them affectionately as "little ones."

Nel is starkly different from her fellow Fell Dragon siblings, namely her deep sisterly affection and protective streak for her younger twin brother Nil. It is due to her protectiveness that she violently lashed out at her siblings at the notion of them murdering him for her. Understandably mortified by her explosive temper that led to her slaughtering said siblings in a rage, Nel expressed uncertainty over her Father's compliments who congratulated her for slaughtering her weak siblings.

The Xenologue version of Alear was later revealed to be the subject of her affection. Their heroic, yet tragic sacrifice to end Sombron filled her with such sorrow that she effectively locked her heart to an alternate version of Alear who reminded her of the Alear she had lost. Thus, Nel has a hard time working with this new Alear initially. Most of their initial interactions are cold, especially from her end, speaking very harshly at them and throwing backhanded comments even when commending their prowess in battle. Eventually, she acknowledges that Alear is perfectly capable on their own and that, while a different individual as a whole, carries the same spirit as her version of Alear. Her sternness remains in their interactions to a degree, but she makes it clear that it is solely out of concern for Alear's well-being as a new precious ally and her desire to prevent a death of another Alear.

"Just a minute! The following section contains spoilers. Viewing it will cost a lot. Are you prepared to pay for it?"

Even after learning that the true Nil was long dead, she sees Rafal as being her irreplaceable "other half" and willingly kills herself rather than live without him. Following her revival, she redoubles her efforts to keep Rafal safe and sees their shared Dragonstone as proof that they have genuinely become twins and equals.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Overall[]

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Nel must be used in all of the Fell Xenologues, during which she appears to be one of the more-solid characters (disregarding Emblems or Inherited Skills). In the main story of Engage, however, she appears more average in performance, but keeps many of her strengths in the Xenologue, but with the added bonus of finally acquiring skills. Her growth rates are each very close to the average across what each playable character has (across physical and magical fighters alike), and her starting stats at Level 20 match this, albeit with notable bumps in her starting Speed and Dexterity. Her starting class, Fell Child, offers the growth bonuses of a promoted class, roughly in line with those of a Royal Knight, but with the base stat bonuses of a basic one. With all of these elements together, Nel is competent but not spectacular; at least while she's not over-leveled, she won't juggernaut very well against foes who can reliably hit her, nor will she destroy them on the first hit (unless she gets lucky). Thanks to her Personal Skill, Nel's Critical Hit goes up by 10 following an enemy phase where Rafal is attacked, suggesting a role as a clean-up attacker for later turns.

Her variation of Fell Child allows her to use both Lances and Dragonstones. The main draw of the latter, aside from turning into a dragon, is that the damage type is neutral on the Weapon Triangle and thus will not allow Breaking except by forced breaks like Fracture; there are numerous different Fell Stones that are each geared towards a different type of foe, with one even allowing for ranged combat, but these are resource-intensive to switch between and cannot be upgraded through Forging. Being a Dragon Unit in this class, she has much more powerful applications of the Emblem Rings and Bracelets than most other units, turning her into an even more powerful unit in her Engage state. This alone incentivizes keeping her in her base class; however, her Class Skill, Resist Emblems, has no utility outside of online PVP battles and Paralogues once the late-game starts, the former of which has her exposed to attacks from foes Engaged with the Ring of the Connector. Should one choose to reclass Nel, her balanced stats and access to Veyle's Obscurité may make her an interesting Mage Knight or High Priest.

Emblem Ring/Bracelet wise, Nel has the most balanced stats of the four Dragons, and can thus handle many Emblems with roughly-equal competence. Her high Speed makes her a natural fit for the Rings of the Hero-King and Lady of the Plains; Emblem Lyn's Alacrity, in particular, allows Nel to avoid even the risk of getting hit by doubling before the counter-attack. Even if she doesn't turn out particularly well in any area, Nel can always use the Ring of the Princess Exalt better than most due to her 90% trigger with Bonded Shield. Alternatively, since Nel generally has better Magic than Alear and Rafal, she can be given whatever magic Emblem Veyle isn't using and deal chip damage or healing without worrying too much about placement; the Ring of the Dawn Maiden offers healing, the Bracelet of the Strategist offers wide-ranged offenses, and the Ring of the Caring Princess offers both, along with a bit of Strength that Veyle normally wouldn't make use of. Nel's mixed offensive stats allow her to use the Bracelet of the Doting Sister effectively as well. Combined with an inherited Draconic Hex, she can debuff a large group with Camilla's Engage Attack and follow-up with Soar, whilst her Dragon nature allows her to fully leverage Camilla's Dragon Veins in a way only matchable by Corrin likewise equipped on a Dragon unit.

Overall, Nel is a versatile unit who is quite effective at supporting her peers. She does her best when supporting Rafal, but just about any team can make use of her in one way or another, as someone who can pull their own weight when needed. She's certainly the most impactful if obtained early, where she can function as another Vander of sorts and make use of her Class Skill, but she doesn't have too much trouble catching up if she's obtained a bit late. Lastly, she can gain a lot by reclassing, but keeping and training her in her base class certainly isn't a waste.

Nel is a corruption of El, her Japanese name. El is derived from "elle", French for "she" and "her".

Trivia[]

  • Nel's artwork depicts her wielding Représailles.
  • Nel shares her English voice actress, Liz Morey, with Hilda from Genealogy of the Holy War in her appearance in Heroes.
  • Nel shares some similarities with Yuri:
    • Both are playable characters unlocked in DLCs.
    • Both did questionable things for good reasons. (Yuri worked for Aelfric and "betrayed" the gang to protect his mother and people. Nel killed the royals due to them being Corrupted.)
    • They also both can love the protagonist regardless of gender, as Yuri can marry both genders of Byleth, while Nel will love the Divine Dragon no matter which avatar was chosen.
