—Nerþuz to the Order of Heroes
Nerþuz is a character introduced in Book VII of Fire Emblem Heroes.
Profile[]
Nerþuz is the Goddess of the Land who hails from Vanaheimr and the younger sister of Njörðr. She is also the aunt of Freyr and Freyja.
For initially unknown reasons, Nerþuz stole the Ár, the source of Njörðr's power, from her brother, and retreated to her Land Temple. Under Njörðr's direction, Seiðr and the Order of Heroes go to the Land Temple, where Nerþuz hands over the Ár because she finds the mortals of Midgard to be too precious to defeat. Before letting the Order go, she tells Sharena that when she meets them for the first time, if Sharena makes a request sweetly, she will be more easily swayed.
Sent back in time a few hundred years before Seiðr's initial arrival in Askr, the Order of Heroes meets Nerþuz officially for the second time, though chronologically it is the first time for her. She is initially hostile, insisting that Vanaheimr is not the place for mortals of Midgard. Acting on advice from Nerþuz's future self, Sharena asks Nerþuz to let them go in a cutesy fashion. Nerþuz drops all hostilities and lets them off with a warning about avoiding Njörðr. Before departing, Sharena asks Nerþuz to let her future self know how she likes to be addressed if they ever meet again.

After Njörðr brings about events that cause the Golden Curse to transfer from Heiðr to Seiðr and is subsequently killed by Gullveig, Nerþuz arrives to assist the Order of Heroes and Seiðr. She reveals that she stole the Ár from Njörðr after he had stolen the Aurr, the source of her own power, and locked it away in his vault. With his death, the seal on his vault is broken, and she and the Order journey to retrieve it. She believes that it can be used to bring an end to the Golden Curse.
Nerþuz has extensive knowledge of the curse, and theorizes that in order to bring an end to the cycle of the Golden Serpents, the Order must have access to an equal level of power. She explains that the Breidablik, which Kiran had temporarily lost and had returned by Kvasir, had actually been wielded by a Kiran of a previous cycle that died to Gullveig. This Breidablik had previously been empowered by the Aurr, and when Gullveig became Kvasir, she brought the weapon back in time with her. Thus, when Nerþuz uses the Aurr on the already enchanted Breidablik, the power grows exponentially. With her guidance, Kiran uses it on Seiðr, destroying the Golden Serpents within her and freeing her from the curse, though it still affects both Gullveig and Kvasir. Nerþuz plans with the Order to defeat them, ending the curse of the Golden Serpents and the cycle for good.
Personality[]
Nerþuz has a motherly, if eccentric, personality and is affectionate to creatures of the land. She enjoys sweetly teasing those she meets and develops a fondness for the Order of Heroes. Her attitude toward mortals is the polar opposite of her brother Njörðr, who detests them to the point of wishing their total destruction.
As gods of opposite domains, she and her brother have been rivals since they were born. For seemingly no reason, Njörðr stole her Aurr and locked it in his vault. Nerþuz, knowing of his apocalyptic plans, retaliated by taking his Ár.

Base Set[]
Nerþuz is an offensive Blue Beast Cavalry Light Mythic Hero geared towards powerful player turn plays. Sitting at 42 Atk and 47 Spd, she easily lands powerful hits and can perform Follow-Up Attacks easily. To compensate, she has average physical bulk scoring at 70 and low magical bulk at 60. Nerþuz's kit emphasizes on her being on the initiative in battle as a result of her offensive prowess and can decimate a battlefield if she is allowed to initiate battles. She is great for hit-and-run style offensive as she has enough means to suppress high mobility enemy teams while clearing them with relative ease.
Horn of the Land has the standard Beast effect of transforming at the start of her turn if she is either adjacent to only Beasts and Dragons or is not adjacent to an ally. Regardless if transformed or not, Nerþuz requires one less attack to charge her Special skill and if she has at least 25% of her HP at the start of combat, she gains in-combat stat increases based off of the default total of her Special's cooldown x2 and then +5. With her default Galeforce, she gains a +15 increase to her stats. She also gains twice the Special charge per attack and has Null Follow-Up, disabling skills that guarantee a foe's ability to perform Follow-Ups or prevents hers. If transformed, she also gains a flat +2 to her Atk and if she initiates, she inflicts -4 Atk/Def on her foe and completely disables their ability to perform follow-ups.
Nerþuz's Mythic skill is Fruit of Life, which inflicts -5 Spd/Def on her foe during combat as long as she has 25% HP at the start of combat and reduces damage of the first attack she receives by 40% and then turns that reduced damage into additional damage to her next attack. Also, if she is only adjacent to a single ally or no allies under this condition, she disables any skill that reduces her Special skill charge and inflicts【Gravity】on her target and any foe adjacent to her target after battle.
Galeforce allows Nerþuz, once per player phase, to gain a full additional action when she triggers it. Due to her special acceleration, she can usually do this in a single round of combat during her turn. Atk/Spd Clash grants her Atk/Spd equal to the number of spaces she moved (maximizing at 4) +6 and if she moved at least two spaces, she nullifies any penalties to her Atk/Spd in combat. Alarm Atk/Spd grants her +6 Atk/Spd if she is adjacent to no more than 2 allied units at the start of her turn and also gives her【Canto (1)】, allowing her to move one space after attacking, using an assist skill, or destroying a structure.
Counters[]
Nerþuz's B Skill is extremely potent, but prevents her from utilizing Beast Agility or Beast Follow-Up to bypass the transformation restrictions, meaning that she requires higher consideration in positioning if using her on teams that have non-Beast/Dragon units. She can handle being on the receiving end of attacks at times thanks to the damage reduction of Fruit of Life, but is ill suited to be under constant pressure of enemy offensive. On her own, she can easily pierce through a wide range of wall-oriented units even to the likes of an unmerged Winter Black Knight, Fomortiis, and Fallen Edelgard albeit, she will suffer heavy damage in most cases. Pavise can be extremely annoying for her due to the huge damage reduction and Rearmed Fallen Robin can soak damage enough that Nerþuz can fail to take her down and Young Hector's base kit completely soaks her attacks. Interestingly, Nerþuz can lose to Altina with her full Mythic Refine and upgrades. She is at her weakest during her foe's turn, so baiting her into range without actually initiating on her end immediately puts her under threat of being targeted by a suitable unit who can initiate on her. She has no natural means to counter ranged units, so high damage Tomes can exploit her lower Res. As a Beast and Cavalry unit, she will also take heavy damage from enemies that carry effective damage weapons like Micaiah, Brave Eirika, Brave Eliwood and Picnic Flora, the former three being able to simply overpower the damage reduction of Fruit of Life in their single attack against her. In general, Nerþuz can dispatch foes, even against some she has color disadvantage against, but can still suffer heavy damage in the resulting fight. Without proper means to recover, even her high offensive threat can be disabled once she loses her health threshold range.
Skill Inheritance[]
Nerþuz only lacks an Assist skill which Reposition is a great choice due to her high mobility and the general value of the positioning.
The rest of her kit synergizes so well that replacing them is only a matter of preference if looking to take her in another direction. Replacing Galeforce with Aether will solidify immediate combat damage while maintaining the stat boost.

Etymology[]
Nerthus is an obscure goddess from Germanic Mythology as not much information is available about her. However, the first account of her was given by the Roman historian Tacitus who referred to her as Terra Mater (Mother Earth). She is said to be a fertility goddess as well as the first wife of Njǫrðr and the mother of Freyr and Freyja. The name Nerþuz can also be a feminine and Latinized form of Njǫrðr. It is often theorized that Nerþuz is actually Njǫrðr, or his unnamed sister-wife.
Trivia[]
- Nerþuz shares her English voice actress, Cristina "Vee" Valenzuela, with Tatiana in Echoes and Heroes, Lachesis and Athena in Heroes, and Merrin in Engage.
- In her debut chapter, Nerþuz was originally described in English as Freyja and Freyr's mother. This was later acknowledged as an error through an announcement and eventually corrected. This error was not present in the original Japanese.
- Nerþuz's interactions with Sharena utilizes the bootstrap paradox. Nerþuz tells Sharena to appeal to her past self by acting cutely. When they travel to the past, Sharena uses Nerþuz's advice and acts cutely, gaining her affection. When they leave, Sharena tells Nerþuz to remind Sharena later in the future how she wishes to be addressed by mortals, thus completing the causal loop of both these interactions initiating the other.
