The Nintendo 64, abbreviated to N64, is the third home console made by Nintendo.

Overview[]

Released in 1996, the Nintendo 64 was Nintendo's successor to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom, and the first Nintendo console with native support for polygonal 3D graphics. Just as prior Nintendo consoles were supported by accessory add-ons (the Famicom Disc System for the original Nintendo Famicom and the Satellaview for the Super Famicom), a similar accessory for the Nintendo 64, the 64DD, was released in Japan on December 11, 1999. Featuring a disc drive and the ability to connect online, the hardware was designed to support exclusive titles, as well as content expansions of cartridge-based N64 titles.

However, the 64DD was a commercial failure that saw only limited software support, and was never released outside of Japan. The Fire Emblem title Fire Emblem: Ankoku no Miko was originally developed for the 64DD, but was later shifted to development as a cartridge-based N64 title. Ankoku no Miko was subsequently cancelled in 2000, and Intelligent Systems moved on to develop Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade for the Game Boy Advance.
