“A ballista for striking distant enemies.”
—In-game description, Shadow Dragon

The Pachyderm (エレファント Erefanto, lit. Elephant in the Japanese versions) is a Ballista that recurrently appears across the Fire Emblem Series. As its name implies, this ballista is one that fires ammunition that is designed to deliver a brutally devastating amount of damage each time it succeeds in striking its target, a fact that is correspondingly reflected in its high Might.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

"Pachyderm" is the abbreviated form of the term "Pachydermata", that which is essentially a portmanteau of the Greek words pachys (meaning "thick) and derma (meaning "skin"), distinguishing features that identify such mammals like elephants, rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses. Given this fact, the ballista in question can thus be deemed to be appropriately named, as the ammunition that it discharges is of a heavyweight nature, comparable to the bulky weights that the named animals present.
