The Pirate (パイレーツ Marine Thief in the Japanese versions) is an axe-wielding class commonly found in the Fire Emblem games.
In-game
Combat
In terms of stats, pirates are similar to other axe-wielding units such as Fighters and Brigands. They possess characteristically high strength and HP, with somewhat low defense, although not to the same extreme as the regular axe fighter. They sometimes have low skill as well, making it difficult for them to hit accurately.
The pirate class' most notable characteristic is their ability to stand on/walk across water tiles (at the cost of their movement being greatly hindered), an ability which most of the other classes lack.
Like brigands and thieves, enemy pirates are able to destroy villages by ending their turn on their entrances. Upon doing so, the village will be destroyed and any item that could have been obtained will be lost. This can be prevented by visiting the village with any friendly unit before it gets destroyed.
Promotion
They can only promote to Berserkers in Fire Emblem: Binding Blade and in Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken. As berserkers, they retain their ability to cross water tiles and will also gain an increased critical rate (+30% in Binding Blade, +15% in Rekka no Ken). In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, they are also given the option to promote to Warriors, giving them access to bows, but they will lose their ability to cross water tiles.
In Fire Emblem Gaiden, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, the class overlaps with the Brigand class, which has gained the pirate's ability to cross water tiles.
