Player Units are the characters controlled by the player in all Fire Emblem games.

Overview[]

Player Units are the units under the player's direct control, and the player is in control of at least one such unit in every battle. In the battlefield UI, these characters are represented by either the field sprites, cursor highlights, and health bars with the color blue. While the map sprites may appear blue, character uniforms and general appearances can be other colors.

Player Units serve as the backbone of the army the player may deploy to battle. Players are given a set amount of predetermined unique Player Units in each game with around 40-50 characters with fixed, but unique characteristics and characterizations. Gaiden has the least amount only 32 unique characters and Radiant Dawn having the highest amount at 73 unique characters. While the player may have a large roster of Player Units at their disposal, all battles restrict the player to deploying a fixed maximum amount of units to a battle and will not replace any character mid-battle should one fall.

Several games may also feature the ability to recruit generic units either as a Replacement character in Shadow Dragon/New Mystery of the Emblem, an Einherjar in Awakening, and Capture/Kidnap unit in Fates.
