The Portal to Other Worlds is opened by Sombron when he used the power of the Emblem Rings. The creation of the portal destabilized Elyos, which weakened the Emblems, as they lack physical form. Marth warned Alear that once the portal closes, he and the other Emblems would cease to be due to the resulting distortion.
Having no other choice if they wanted to save Elyos, Alear raised the Somniel into the portal to engage Sombron in one final conflict.
