A 4-part prologue was added in [[Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon]]. This explains everything before the start of chapter 1, and is only available on the normal difficulty. This is also the only way to obtain the character [[Frey]] (he doesn't appear in hard mode or in the NES version of the game). In part 4 of the prologue, numerous high level soldiers, who at this point in the game are impossible to defeat, appear to try to capture Marth. You have to have either Jagen, Abel, Cain, Frey, or Gordin (if you didn't kill him when he was an enemy) sacrifice themselves by disguising themselves as Marth (this might explain Frey's absence in hard mode, as he must be the automatic choice for who gets captured/possibly killed). If the player has only four characters or less alive by the end of the prologue, then the substitute archer [[Norne]] (another character that is only available in the game's normal mode) will join your army.

A 4-part prologue was added in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. This explains everything before the start of chapter 1, and is only available on the normal difficulty. This is also the only way to obtain the character Frey (he doesn't appear in hard mode or in the NES version of the game). If the player has only four characters or less alive by the end of the prologue, then the substitute archer Norne (another character that is only available in the game's normal mode) will join your army.
