In The Sacred Stones, it is one of the classes an Archer or a Mercenary can promote to, and can use Bows as well as swords. To promote an archer to that class, they must use the Orion's Bolt after they reach level ten. For mercenaries, the level condition remains the same but you must use a Hero Crest instead. A difference between the Ranger and Sniper is that a ranger is unable to mount ballistas.

For the starting class of Ike in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, see Ranger (Path of Radiance).

Ranger (known as Forest Knight in Japanese releases) is a horse-mounted combat physical class that first appeared in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

History in the Series

In its original inception in Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, the Ranger is the promoted form of the Free Knight class, wielding Swords as its sole weapon of choice. The class's Skill and Speed are superior to those boasted by the Paladin class.

The class later appear in The Sacred Stones, the first title to feature it with a localized name of Ranger. One of the promoted forms of both the Archer and Mercenary classes, Rangers are able to equip both Swords and Bows, but lose the ability to mount Ballistae.

Later entries feature a similar class concept in the Bow Knight.

Overview

Combat

Like all mounted units, Rangers generally have great mobility, although they may be considered slower as compared to other mounted units. Rangers are noted for being the only horseback-mounted unit that is able to navigate across water, a feat that is normally something only Berserkers, Pirates, Thieves or flying units are able to perform.
