For the chapter whose battle map is called "The Rite of Rising", see Return to Me.

The Rite of Rising was an attempt to resurrect the Goddess by the Four Apostles (Aubin, Chevalier, Timotheos and Noa), under the orders of Seiros. It failed, due to the lack of blood poured into the Chalice of Beginnings; the Apostles sealed the Chalice and willingly left the Garreg Mach Monastery.

It can also be noted that only the Four Apostle's bloodline can use the Rite.

One thousand years later, in the side story Cindered Shadows, the Four Apostles' descendants, Yuri, Constance, Balthus, and Hapi, were used by Cardinal Aelfric in his bid to recreate the Rite of Rising with the intent of resurrecting Sitri. Aelfric believes the Rite failed due the Chalice not receiving enough of the Apostles' blood, and thus plans to drain the Ashen Wolves completely.

The Rite is interrupted by the arrival of Byleth's forces, who stop the ritual from draining blood from the Ashen Wolves. Though cornered, Aelfric attempts to complete the ritual regardless, which ends in failure. Both Aelfric and Sitri are absorbed into the Chalice, creating an Umbral Beast.

According to Rhea, the outcome of the ritual and the creation of the Umbral Beast is the same as what occurred when the Apostles first attempted the Rite. And though Aelfric refuses to listen to her, she explains that the Rite of Rising would fail to bring Sitri back regardless, as her spirit had already moved on.
