“If not for my Emblem I would have died powerless. Small. That Emblem had the strength to stand alone! Unlike you, huddled together, whining like dogs. Such a warrior showed me the meaning of all existence—fight alone, take revenge!”
—Sombron, Chapter 26

Sombron is the main antagonist and final boss of Fire Emblem Engage.

Profile[]

One thousand years prior to the beginning of Engage, the Fell Dragon Sombron ravaged and conquered Elyos. He was stopped by a group of heroes lead by the Divine Dragon Lumera who sealed him away with the power of the Emblems. Despite his fall, a group devoted to him created a cult that desired to revive him. The nation of Elusia, meanwhile, shied away from worship of the Divine Dragon, standing out as a nation that worshiped the Fell Dragon instead. The aforementioned cult would eventually come to be part of the predominant religious sect in Elusia.

A thousand years after he was sealed, the Emblem Rings became active once more, and under Sombron's influence, Elusia launched a campaign to collect the twelve Emblem Rings in order to revive and empower him.

Sombron is not originally from Elyos, but from another unnamed world where his family was slaughtered. Having traveled there through an otherworldly gate, presumably having been exiled from his original realm, Sombron's only keepsake from that world was a single Emblem Ring which held the Emblem of Foundations. Said Ring housed a solitary warrior who fought alone in their original world. Nonetheless, they served as his only companion when he entered Elyos.

Discovered by a local village and raised there, Sombron eventually lost his Emblem Ring, turning him bitter towards the village, who he blamed for the Ring's disappearance. Out of vengeance, Sombron destroyed the village and began a quest to collect the Emblem Rings of Elyos to empower him so he could accomplish his goals of destroying Elyos, and utilizing the otherworldly gate, return to his original world and seek similar vengeance.

Sombron's war resulted in him amassing a huge army of corpse soldiers, the Corrupted, through his Fell Dragon powers. Sombron also allied with a few Dragon tribes of Elyos, gaining a particularly potent ally in Zephia. He also fathered numerous children. Nearly all of his children became members of his army with only his youngest, Veyle, spared from this duty for simply being too young to fight by the climax of his war. Sombron showed no affection towards his children and merely viewed them as extensions of his will and a means of accomplishing his goals. He was not afraid to kill them for failure, sometimes leaving them to die to the Corrupted, and in some cases, by his own hand. One of Sombron's children, Alear, was among his most valuable children, being one of his children to have survived the longest and whom he left in possession the Ring of the Hero-King.

By sheer chance, Alear met the Divine Dragon leader Lumera and the two, rather than fight, decided to bond over their mutual loneliness. This bond caused Alear to defect from Sombron's forces and openly rebel against their father. In the final battle, Alear and Lumera are able to deal a decisive blow on Sombron. Before he can be fully sealed away, however, Sombron musters a final attack, mortally wounding Alear.

Though sealed away, Sombron's influence on Elyos remained with a small cult devoted to him lead by Zephia formed to revive Sombron in the future. Veyle was later captured and put into suspended animation until one day she could be used for Sombron's plans.

The Divine and the Fell[]

Coinciding with the Emblem Rings requiring a blessing from the Divine Dragons every 1000 years, Sombron's cult overtook Elusia's religious sect, becoming the country's primary religious figure. Under his instruction, and through King Hyacinth, Elusia launched a surprise invasion of Lythos to steal the Emblem Rings just shortly after Alear had awoken from their thousand year slumber. The Elusian forces were successfully able to take the Rings of the Princess Exalt, Sage Lord, Azure Twins, and Instructor from Lythos' Ring Vault and also killed Lumera. Sombron proceeded to corrupt those rings as well as the Ring of the Lady of the Plains that was in Elusia's custody.

Needing the Blood of Sovereigns to further his revival, Hyacinth issued a challenge to the King of Brodia, Morion, to a duel, which resulted in the latter's capture. At Elusia Castle, King Morion is sacrificed for his blood, and after Hyacinth's defeat, Sombron devours him to fully restore his mortal form. Utilizing Veyle, whom he had Zephia place a brainwashing spell on, the Emblem Rings Alear had acquired were stolen, forcing them to retreat.

After some time, Alear is able to recover the remaining Rings and take back the stolen Rings, giving them the full empowered set. Alear attempts to break Sombron's hold on Veyle by destroying the mind control device on her. While successful, Sombron appears and steals the Rings at once, allowing him full access to his powers. Having served the entirety of her purpose in his plans, Sombron launches a lethal attack at Veyle, which Alear intercepts, killing them in the process. With the full vestiges of his power in his hands, Sombron leaves to finalize his goals.

Having been given the miracle ritual by the Emblem Rings, reviving Alear and turning them into the thirteenth Emblem, the Fire Emblem, Alear and their forces proceed to remove Sombron's protective enchantments, even going into the past to destroy one of them. With all of his protections gone, Alear enters the otherworldly gate to confront Sombron for the last time.

In the Portal to Other Worlds, Sombron reveals that he waged war on Elyos simply to travel back to his original world to seek vengeance on them for banishing him. Though he claims that he would be leaving Elyos forever, Alear believes that Sombron will simply come back after he finished his attack on his original world and proceeds to use their Emblem powers to launch the final assault on Sombron.

A fierce battle ensues, even forcing Sombron to call upon the Dark Emblems of the worlds the Emblems originate from. Alear and their forces musters the power to finally slay Sombron once and for all. In his death throes, Sombron reveals to Alear that the Emblem of Foundations was his original companion. Alear asks him if he remembers the incantation and Sombron confirms he does and chants "Burn us, Emblem of Foundations." Though no Emblem is summoned, Sombron merely sees his last two children in front of him and reacts as though he was successful. He dies satisfied, believing to have been reunited with his lost Emblem.

Fell Xenologue[]

In the Fell Xenologue version of Elyos, the Sombron of that world plays a similar role to the main story counterpart, having waged war against the Divine Dragons of that world 1000 years prior to the events of the Fell Xenologue. When Lumera died, her child Alear took the mantle of Divine Dragon of Elyos and prepared for the day Sombron would eventually return.

When Sombron was inevitably revived, Alear faced him and in the ensuing battle, the two killed each other. The death of Alear removed the Divine Dragon's blessings on Elyos, leading to its rapid decline. Compared to his main timeline counterpart, Xenologue Sombron was not the father of Alear, who instead was the actual biological child of Lumera. However, a Xenologue version of Veyle was still his biological child.

Like his main timeline counterpart, Xenologue Sombron fathered multiple Fell Children. As an interesting quirk, Xenologue Sombron's children were all born as twins. Many of his children perished during the war in similar manner as his main timeline counterpart, but more often than not, most of the twin pairings would kill their weaker sibling. Among his twin sets were Nel and Nil, who had an unusually strong, loving bond. One day, several of Nel's siblings harassed her over having a "weak" sibling and even offered to kill Nil for her. Enraged, Nel slaughtered those siblings present. Horrified by her actions, she admitted her guilt to Sombron. Even more horrifyingly, Xenologue Sombron was completely unconcerned and even congratulated her for culling the weak. This cold indifference lead Nel and her brother to defect from his forces.

Rafal, one of Sombron's other children, impressed Sombron with his ability to awaken the Emblem bracelets from slumber, who decided to make him his heir and ordered him not to reveal his newfound power. Before his death, he used the last of his power to taint Nel's dragonstone, who she had shared with Rafal, evoking feelings of envy and resentment in Rafal over Nel's strength and ability to transform. Rafal would attempt to honor Sombron's wishes by collecting the Emblem bracelets, but was ultimately foiled by the main timeline Alear, who had been called in from another world, alongside Nel and the remaining members of the Four Winds.

Personality[]

Sombron is an evil dragon, hellbent on accomplishing his goals by any means necessary. He cares very little for others, foregoing any sort of notion of meaningful bonds to anyone, even his own offspring. His offspring in fact are nothing more than disposable tools towards his goals that he can simply discard once they have lost their usefulness. He has, on more than one occasion, personally executed "failures" himself, whether it be for incompetence, weakness, or insubordination.

In the past, Sombron was a scared young child from another world, exiled to Elyos by enemy forces after his people lost a war for control over their native Emblems and only spared from murder out of kindness. His only friend was the Emblem of Foundations, who allegedly taught him to seek revenge for his exile while disdaining connections to others. Its disappearance following his adoption by a village convinced him that forming bonds would only lead to further misery, and he resolved to view other people as nothing more than tools for his ambitions, even his own children. Over many years, he hardened his heart and became the evil Fell Dragon responsible for much of Elyos' suffering, although he claims that he never sought to destroy Elyos and simply did not care about the suffering he caused it so long as he could use its Emblems to accomplish his goals.

Sombron chastises others for forming bonds, claiming it makes them weak, but despite his insistence on remaining alone, his greatest goal is to be reunited with his Emblem. This is seen when he eats Hyacinth despite him returning Sombron's powers. When this contradiction is pointed out to him as he is dying, he begrudgingly admits that he wished to be acknowledged for his growth since his exile to Elyos. Despite this, he scorns the idea that he could have found that acknowledgement from his children and followers instead of instigating war and insists that it is fitting that he dies in the same lonely and anguished manner that he lived.

Quotes[]

Battle Conversations[]

“You fought so hard, traveled so far, merely to die?”
—Sombron's pre-battle quote

Vs. Alear

  • Sombron: You are pathetic. As if spurning me to be a Divine Dragon was not enough... Patricide? Unforgivable.
  • Alear: You killed your own children—tried to destroy the world—for your selfish desires. You're the one who is beyond forgiveness.
  • Sombron: I said your world meant nothing to me. It's people, my children...you. Once I leave, I will forget you. Even if we met again, I would not recall your face.
  • Alear: In other words, you'll make the same mistakes as before. So which of us is pathetic?

Vs. Veyle

  • Veyle: Papa...
  • Sombron: Oh, the defect. I thought myself rid of you, yet here you are.
  • Veyle: Heh.
  • Sombron: You laugh.
  • Veyle: You're angry because I persisted and survived. It almost feels like praise. We never spent time together as father and daughter, like I wanted. But I'm glad I didn't give up. I made it. Because now, I can be the one who defeats you.
  • Sombron: You are a malicious child. I would expect no less from my own.
  • Veyle: I hope you're watching, Mama. I'm going to stop him—just like you told me.

Vs. Nel

  • Nel: I did not expect to feel nostalgia in this moment. But your presence is exactly as I remember it.
  • Sombron: You seem familiar...
  • Nel: I am the daughter of another Sombron, in another world. If you know my face, then you merely recall a child who is dead. You and I are two Fell Dragons on opposing sides of a battle. Nothing more. And I mean to defend the Divine Dragon to my last breath. Prepare yourself!

Vs. Rafal

  • Rafal: I have often wondered how it would feel to see my father's face again. Now I finally know.
  • Sombron: Surely you are not my child. No more of them remain.
  • Rafal: I am a Fell Dragon from another world. Our relation is theoretical at best. The Sombron of my world bade me commit terrible sins to become his successor. I brought that world to ruin. But perhaps I can redeem myself by kindling hope in this one. And when I defeat you, I will prove once and for all that I am greater than my father!

Etymology[]

The name Sombron is likely derived from El Sombrerón, a legendary figure in Guatemalan folklore and a sort of Boogyman in Mexico. He's mostly depicted as a short man wearing a large black hat and wears all black except for his boots and belt and often courts young women. It may also come from Sombra, Spanish for "shadow" or from "somber" or Ombroso, Italian for "shady".

Trivia[]

  • Sombron shares a couple similarities with Grima from Awakening. They both share the title of Fell Dragon, and they were both sealed 1,000 years prior to the start of their respective games.
  • Sombron shares his English voice actor, Erik Braa, with Zelot from The Binding Blade as he appears in Heroes.
    • He also shares his Japanese voice actor, Katsuyuki Konishi, with Xander and Hubert.
