The Sting Shuriken (針手裏剣 Hari shuriken, lit. Needle Shuriken) is a Shuriken that is introduced in Fire Emblem Fates. It is imbued with the special property of inflicting effective damage against armoured units, but is weak against non-armoured foes. The Sting Shuriken is also capable of reducing the Skill, Defense and Resistance of enemy units post-battle, alongside raising its wielder's Speed by 2.
The shuriken (手裏剣) was a common throwing weapon for ninja, and its name can mean "sword hidden in the hand", or "the sword inside of hand". These were flattened, bladed discs that were thrown at enemies.
Ironically, shurikens mostly look like small discs with flat spikes protruding out the sides, so that it could slice while being thrown and spinning. The sting shuriken seen in Fire Emblem Fates looks much more like a kunai (苦無), which were diamond shaped knives that were originally used for farming and repurposed into weapons by some ninja.
- Furthermore, kunai were mostly used as close combat weapons for stabbing people up close, while actual shurikens were meant to be thrown.
- The sting shuriken also has some influences of a woman's hairpin in its design. This could reference the kunoichi (くノ一), a group of female ninjas who would hide in plain sight.
