The Four Hounds is the twenty-third chapter of Fire Emblem Engage.

Story[]

Veyle brings Alear to a volcanic region of Gradlon, where she senses a Fell Dragon Shard. She then sees Zephia and Griss guarding it, and resolves herself to confront the two. After speaking briefly with Zephia, Griss calls her a "defect", which Alear objects to. When Zephia and Griss are surprised by Alear's survival, they then reveal that they were revived as an Emblem. The two refuse to back down from the Shard, so Veyle states her intention to kill them. Griss is baffled that she singled them out in particular, which Veyle responds to by calling Mauvier and Marni her knights, and admonishing Zephia for killing the latter. Zephia then claims that she saw the Four Hounds as her family, who needed to be punished whenever they went astray, though Alear rejects the idea of it being real love. Zephia and Griss reaffirm their loyalty to Sombron, so Veyle and Alear steel themselves to fight and kill the two.

Alear and Veyle defeat Zephia and Griss, which causes the Fell Dragon Shard they were defending to immediately shatter. Veyle says her goodbyes to the two, though Zephia replies that Griss is dead and cannot hear it. Zephia tells Veyle that the next Fell Dragon Shard is unreachable, at the bottom of a lake. She then gives her and Alear an enchanted crystal that will alter the terrain for a few hours, which will allow them to reach it. Zephia explains that, as the most powerful of the Mage Dragons, she drained the last of her life to create it, and recounts that she only realized her full powers after her parents and many others died. Dumbfounded by Zephia's sudden kindness, Veyle asks her why she could not have changed her ways sooner, to which she replies that she could only do so because it was the end. Zephia urges Veyle to forget about her, but she refuses to do so, says her last goodbyes to Zephia, then leaves alongside Alear.

As Zephia lays dying, Griss wakes up, saying that he played dead so he could savor as much pain as possible. He asks her repeatedly why she suddenly changed ideals, to which she responds that she wanted to get revenge against Sombron, whom she wanted to give her a child and a family to care for. She states that she genuinely saw the Four Hounds as her family. Griss chastises her for not acting sooner, though he expresses his undying loyalty to her, and that as an orphan, he viewed her as the closest thing to a mother. Zephia laments that she had not realized she already had the family she sought, then thanks Griss, and the two then die together.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Griss and Zephia will rain volcanic bombs on you destroying the boulders. You'll know where they'll land ahead of time but make sure to get your units out of the way. Your biggest concerns are the griffin and royal knights with freeze staves. Be sure to take them out as soon as possible so you can move out of the volcanic bomb's way. You can use Yunaka with Corrin for fog or Lyn and her doubles when fighting Griss and Zephia.
