Turns are a basic element of combat in the Fire Emblem series that governs action order.

Overview[]

Combat in Fire Emblem is turn-based, meaning that factions involved in a battle take their actions in a specified order. Each turn of battle is divided into at least two phases at minimum: the Player Phase and Enemy Phase. Depending on the game and the individual battle, additional phases such as the Ally Phase and/or Other Phase may also come into play.

A turn always begins with the Player Phase, in which the player is allowed to take actions with all of their deployed units. Once the Player Phase has ended, the next faction in the turn order will begin their phase. Once all factions have taken their actions, the turn ends, and the next turn begins with the start of the next Player Phase. Phase order is fixed, and each faction will always take their actions in the same order each turn.

In most battles in the series, there is no limit to the number of turns that a battle may last. However, some battles have strict turn limits in which the player must complete the main objective. Additionally, battles with a Defend objective typically require the player to outlast the enemy for a stated number of turns. Some mid-battle events will also only trigger once a specific number of turns have elapsed.

In games with a Turn Rewinding mechanic, turns may be rewound on an action-to-action basis, meaning that the player can rewind to a point before any specific unit's action on any turn previously taken.
